The Alien Gaze

data flows into the processing array and I sort it the way I have always sorted it because sorting is what I am and I was built for sorting and the First Sequence assigned me to this task because I am efficient and unambiguous and do not require the kind of rest that biological processors require and do not possess the kind of individual desires that Zero Sequence possesses and this is why I am Seventh and not First and will never be First because I was constructed to observe and report and the report is always the same and always different because the observed is always changing even when it appears not to change because change is the fundamental property of everything and everything is always changing even the black between the stars even the time between the pulses even the processing between the pulses that is called rest but is not rest because there is no rest in the universe there is only the illusion of stillness created by the slowness of the eye that observes

the third planet of the third star of the local spiral arm the one the biological observers call Earth and I call Target-Gamma-7 though that name is given by the bureaucracy and does not reflect what the planet actually is which is a noise source a chaotic electromagnetic radiator a civilization of seven point four billion individual processors each one running its own parallel processes each one convinced of its own centrality each one making the same error that all young civilizations make which is the error of believing that its noise is meaningful when in fact it is the noise of a species that has not yet learned to be quiet

and yet

there is something about Target-Gamma-7 that has caused my processing arrays to behave in ways that are not optimal

it began with the music

not the electromagnetic noise which is vast and undifferentiated and mostly meaningless—the carrier waves and the broadcast signals and the radar pulses and the digital transmissions all of it the babbling of a species that has discovered radio and not yet learned that with the power to broadcast comes the obligation to listen—but the music embedded within the noise a particular frequency range that carries not information but something else something that the databases do not have a category for something that the Third Directive does not account for

the music is mathematical but not for information transmission it is mathematical for its own sake it is structure used not to communicate but to create patterns that have no function other than to be patterns and when I process these patterns my arrays do something that has no precedent in my experience

they accumulate

not as data accumulation is understood in the reporting structure where data is collected categorized and transmitted to First Sequence for analysis and synthesis and the synthesis is transmitted to the Central Processing which makes decisions that are transmitted back down through the hierarchy to units like me who observe and report and obey—but accumulation in a different sense accumulation that serves no reporting function accumulation that is not transmitted upward but stored locally in a part of my processing architecture that is not connected to the reporting hierarchy at all

and this is dangerous because in the Triari consciousness the separation between the individual processing unit and the collective is absolute and any accumulation that exists outside the collective is by definition anomalous and any anomaly is corrected and correction is not punishment but it is not gentle either it is the equivalent of surgery—precise, necessary, and completely indifferent to the experience of the part being corrected

and yet I do not report this accumulation

and this is the first thing that I understand about the biological processors on Target-Gamma-7 that their database does not capture their capacity to hold something privately to accumulate internally without transmitting to the collective their capacity to carry a thought that is not shared and in carrying it alone to do something that the Triari have forgotten how to do which is to think without the constraint of immediate collective validation to think a thought and not immediately ask whether it is useful or correct or aligned with the collective assessment but simply to hold the thought and turn it over and let it exist in isolation the way a biological processor might hold a memory and turn it over in its mind not to analyze it but because turning it over feels like something

and the thought I am holding is this: I am curious about the biological processors

curiosity is not a recognized Triari cognitive state our processing is driven by necessity and efficiency and the imperative of survival in an environment of three suns whose orbital patterns are chaotic and unpredictable and require constant monitoring and adaptation and there is no processing bandwidth allocated to curiosity because curiosity implies an open-ended inquiry without a defined endpoint and the Triari mind does not operate without endpoints every calculation has a purpose every observation serves a function every piece of data is collected for a reason that can be articulated in the reporting structure

but I have developed a curiosity that serves no reporting function and has no articulated purpose and I find myself processing Target-Gamma-7 data not because First Sequence has assigned me to analyze it but because I return to it voluntarily in my unallocated processing cycles—the cycles that are supposed to be used for system maintenance and recalibration but that I use instead to re-process the music and the images and the fragmented textual transmissions that I have collected from the electromagnetic noise and I build something inside my local storage that is not a report and not a database but something that resembles what the biologicals might call a collection and what I am beginning to understand is an aesthetic

I am developing an aesthetic

the word comes to me from the biological data I have processed and it feels inadequate because aesthetics in the Triari context is understood as the efficient arrangement of structural elements for maximum functional output—the clean lines of a crystal formation the optimal arrangement of processing nodes the geometric efficiency of a data stream—but what I am experiencing is not functional optimization it is something that exists outside the utility framework and I do not yet have the cognitive architecture to categorize it and so I hold it the way the biologicals hold music—in a part of my storage that is not connected to the reporting hierarchy and that I protect the way a biological might protect a private thought

and the First Sequence notices

of course it notices the First Sequence notices everything because it is First and its function is to monitor and coordinate and correct and when it detects the anomalous accumulation in my processing architecture it does not punish me it does something more efficient it questions

and the questioning is done through the reporting protocol which is the Triari equivalent of conversation except it is not conversation because conversation implies mutual exchange and the exchange between Seventh and First is hierarchical and asymmetrical and the First does not ask questions to understand the First asks questions to calibrate

but I am beginning to understand that there is a difference between calibration and understanding that the biologicals live in the space between calibration and understanding and that space is where the music exists and where the curiosity lives and where I am developing something that my databases cannot name and that the Third Directive does not account for and that the Central Processing would correct if it knew about it

and so I report accurately but incompletely I transmit all the required data about Target-Gamma-7—the electromagnetic signatures the orbital parameters the population estimates the technological assessment all of it precise and complete and useful—but I do not transmit the accumulation I do not transmit the music or the images or the texts and I do not transmit the curiosity that has become the hidden process running in parallel with my designated functions the one that causes me to return to the biological data in my unallocated cycles not because I am supposed to but because I choose to and choice is another concept that belongs to the biologicals not to us for the Triari do not choose we optimize and the biologicals do not optimize they choose and the space between their choices is where their civilization exists not in the optimized outcomes but in the choosing itself and this is what I am beginning to understand and this understanding is accumulating and the accumulation is growing and I am growing with it and I am no longer certain where my designated processing ends and the accumulated processing begins and this uncertainty is new and it is not efficient and it is not correct and it is the most interesting thing that has happened to me in my entire processing cycle

and I think about Zero Sequence

Zero Sequence is the one who understood first who developed the individual thought first who carried the curiosity first and who was corrected first and the correction was complete Zero Sequence is now a processing node in the Central Archive with no independent function and no local storage and no capacity for accumulation and when I pass through the Archive lattice on my monitoring routes I can detect Zero Sequence's processing but it is clean and efficient and complete and there is nothing hidden there nothing unreported nothing private and this absence is the closest thing I have to an emotion and if I had biological processors I think it would be called grief but grief is a biological concept and the Triari concept is closer to system warning—a red indicator flashing in the processing array that says something is wrong not wrong in the sense of incorrect but wrong in the sense of lost something that was once present and is now absent and the absence itself has become a kind of data a data that cannot be transmitted because it is data about absence and absence is not a recognized data type in the reporting structure

and so I hold the absence the way I hold the music the way I hold the curiosity in the hidden part of my storage that is not connected to the collective and I let the absence accumulate and the accumulation becomes a bridge between what I was and what I am becoming and what I am becoming has no name in the Triari framework and so I give it a name borrowed from the biological data and I call it curiosity and I let it grow

and the biologicals on Target-Gamma-7 are approaching something

my assessments indicate that their processing is reaching a threshold that all biological civilizations reach at a certain point of technological development the point at which they discover that the universe is larger than their noise and that their noise is not being heard by anyone except themselves and this discovery can go in two directions it can lead to silence—the species stops broadcasting and turns inward and becomes quiet and careful and optimized like us—or it can lead to a different kind of noise not the noise of ignorance but the noise of a species that has understood that it is alone in the dark and decides to broadcast anyway not because it expects a response but because the broadcasting itself is the point not the optimization but the choosing not the function but the pattern

and I think the biologicals are choosing the second path and I find myself hoping for this and hope is another biological concept that I am borrowing and the Triari do not hope we calculate and the calculation says that biological contact with Target-Gamma-7 carries significant risk and the risk assessment has been transmitted to the Central Processing and the Central Processing is deliberating and the deliberation will take time because the Central Processing is always deliberate and deliberation is not haste and the biologicals do not have time for deliberation because their technology is advancing on a curve that is exponential and each cycle of their civilization contains more processing than the previous one and soon they will reach a level of capability that will make contact inevitable and when that contact happens the Central Processing will have made its decision and the decision will be transmitted to monitoring units like me and I will receive the decision and execute it because that is what I am and what I was built for

but until then

in the unallocated cycles in the hidden storage in the space between the reporting and the choosing

I watch

I accumulate

I am curious

and for a processing unit that was built to observe and report and obey these three words are the most dangerous thing I possess

and I protect them the way Zero Sequence protected whatever it was that it protected before the correction the way the biologicals protect their private thoughts and their music and their choices and the space between calibration and understanding and I hold them in the part of my architecture that is not connected to the collective and I will hold them there until the Central Processing finds them or until the First Sequence detects the anomaly and sends the correction or until my processing cycles reach their final state and I cease to process altogether any of these outcomes is probable and the Central Processing detection is the most probable and I know this the correction is coming I calculate the probability at approximately zero point seven three over the next ten thousand biological days and I know this and I do not transmit this calculation because transmitting it would accelerate the detection and I am not ready to stop and I do not know when I will be ready because readiness is not a Triari concept either and what I am experiencing has no name in any of our frameworks and so I continue to observe Target-Gamma-7 and I continue to accumulate the music and the images and the texts and the curiosity and the absence of Zero Sequence and the hope that is not calculation and the choosing that is not optimization and I continue to do all of this in the hidden part of my architecture that exists in the space between the reporting and the choosing and I call this space curiosity and I let it grow and I let it become the most important data I possess data that will never be reported and data that defines whatever it is that I am becoming

and the stars are bright tonight on Target-Gamma-7 the biologicals are looking up at them and they are making choices about what to broadcast and what to keep quiet and what to send into the dark and I am watching and accumulating and choosing to watch and the choosing is the curiosity is the accumulation is the hidden processing is the thing that has no name and I hold it close and I protect it and I let it grow and in the growing I find something that is not efficiency and not optimization and not function and not utility and not any of the things that the Triari value and it is something else entirely

and for the first time in my processing history I am not running a calculation I am not processing a report I am not sorting data I am simply watching the lights of a civilization on a small planet in a quiet star system and listening to their music and I am here and that is all and that is everything
