I.
My office was on the third floor of a building on Santa Monica Boulevard that had probably been fashionable in 1938 and hadn't bothered to upgrade since. The sign on the door said "R. CALLAHAN - PRIVATE INVESTIGATIONS" in letters that had once been gold and were now something closer to the color of dried blood.
Inside: a desk, two chairs, a filing cabinet that stuck when you opened the bottom drawer, and a window that looked out over a brick wall and a fire escape and a world I couldn't afford to live in anymore.
I was thirty-five, I had served in the Navy during the war, and I was very good at finding things. Missing spouses, absent husbands, corporate secrets that companies would pay five hundred bucks to have buried. I was also very bad at keeping my mouth shut, which is why I was still operating a one-man operation instead of running a branch office somewhere.

"It's not supposed to be public knowledge," he said, and that was all he would say.

Someone—some group—had built a massive radio transmitter at the Cape of Good Hope. They had been transmitting for approximately six months, sending the same message into deep space: the location of the solar system, the coordinates of Earth, proof of intelligent life.

I tracked the funding. It came from a network of private donors—wealthy intellectuals, visionaries, people who believed that alien intelligence was the next stage of human evolution. "There's something out there," he said, pouring bourbon into a tiny ceramic cup. "And we don't know if it's friendly or not. But someone on Earth is sending out a flare in a dark room full of people holding guns. And we need someone who thinks outside the box to figure out how to respond."
"Let me get this straight," I said. "You want me—a private dick—to solve an interstellar security problem."

III.
The truth came to me on a rainy Tuesday in October, in a motel room off the 101, sitting in front of a transistor radio that I had tuned to a frequency that shouldn't have existed.
I was listening to static—just white noise, the sound of nothing—and then, between the bursts and crackles, I heard it. A pattern. Not random. Organized. Deliberate.
It lasted three seconds. Then it was gone.
I sat there in the dark motel room, the radio glowing on the nightstand, rain hitting the window, and I understood.
The signal from the Cape was real. But it wasn't the only signal out there. There was something else—something listening. Something that had been listening for a long time.
And it had just answered.

They came at dawn. Two men in dark suits. They took my notes, my radio, and the recording I'd made of the signal. They didn't give me a receipt. They didn't offer me a medal. They didn't offer me anything.
But they offered me a choice.
"We can shut down the Cape transmitter," Wade said. "Or we can build a counterweight. A deterrent. Something that says: if you're listening out there—and we know you are—if you come for Earth, we will send your coordinates into space just as fast as you can blink."
It was the cosmic equivalent of mutually assured destruction. The kind of logic that only makes sense when you're dealing with civilizations, not individuals.
I thought about it for ten seconds.
"Build it," I said.
IV.
The system took a year to complete. A network of radio dishes across the American Southwest, linked by underground cable, controlled from a single bunker beneath the Hollywood Hills. When it was finished, it had one function: broadcast the coordinates of any target in deep space.
I held the key—a physical key, brass, shaped like a rifle barrel—that activated the system. One turn, and the dishes would lock onto a target. Two turns, and the broadcast would begin.
I was not a hero. I was a private detective who had stumbled into something bigger than the war, bigger than politics, bigger than life itself. And I was the only person on Earth who held the key to the most powerful weapon ever created.
Some nights, I sat in my office and looked out at the city—Los Angeles, 1948, the golden city of angels and whores and dreamers and liars, all of them living their small, bright lives beneath a sky full of stars that were also suns, and around those suns were planets, and around those planets were questions that no one could answer.
I kept the key in my desk drawer, next to my gun and my flask and the photograph of my mother, who had died when I was six and whose face I could barely remember.
Sometimes I took the key out and held it in my hand. It was warm from the body heat of the man who held it. It was heavy—not in weight, but in implication.
Behind me, the city hummed. Neon lights flickered on along Santa Monica Boulevard. A jazz band started playing in a club on Wilshire. A taxi honked. A couple walked down the street, hands linked.
Somewhere above us, the stars burned in the dark.
And somewhere between the stars, something was listening.
