The Dark Battle
The ship was called Blue Horizon, and it was dying. Not in the dramatic way that ships die in stories—with groaning metal and flooding decks and crews singing as the water rises. It was dying the way that everything dies in deep space: slowly, quietly, and with nobody to witness it.
The food synthesizers had been failing for three weeks. At first, the failures were minor—a missing vitamin here, a protein shortfall there. The crew adjusted. They rationed. They told themselves that the supply ship would arrive when it was supposed to arrive, which was forty-seven days ago.

Monroe was thirty-two, which made him one of the youngest people on the ship, and one of the most afraid. He had been a soldier before he joined the space program—a conventional soldier, on a conventional planet, fighting a war that had ended before he was assigned to the ship. He had expected deep space to be different. It was not. It was the same violence, just with more silence and less chance of going home.
He started noticing things in the third week of the oxygen failure. Small things at first—food disappearing from the communal storage, water ration credits showing as spent when they hadn't been used, tools going missing from the engineering bay. "What are you looking at?" she asked.

She could feel it. She had felt it for weeks, building like a storm front, the tension between the crew members, the suspicion, the fear, the slow realization that the thing they had all been afraid of was not the cold or the dark or the distance from home but each other.
"What is the dark battle?" she asked.

It happened at 0200 hours, ship time, which was a time that meant nothing anymore but was still used because habit is the last thing to die. Monroe stood in the center of the mess hall with two other security personnel—people who had once been his friends and were now his followers, bound together by fear and the belief that violence was the only language that anyone was speaking anymore.
He accused seven people of hoarding. He produced the list. He demanded that the accused surrender their secret stores. The accused denied everything and called Monroe a liar and a tyrant and said that he was the one hoarding, that he was using the accusations as a way to consolidate power, that he was becoming exactly the kind of threat that the dark battle produced.

McAllister sat in the mess hall, surrounded by the bodies, and she thought about the Old Man and his words and the stars he had been watching through the crack in the hull. She stood up. Her legs were shaking. Her hands were shaking. Her heart was shaking. But she stood up. And she walked to the communication panel and she keyed in a message and she sent it into the dark, knowing that it would take decades to reach anyone, knowing that by the time it arrived there might be nobody left to receive it, knowing that the act of sending it was not an act of hope but an act of defiance, and that defiance, in a universe that was vast and cold and indifferent, was the only thing that remained.
"To whoever finds this," she said, her voice steady despite everything. "We were human once. We tried to be better than the dark. We failed. But we tried. Remember that. Remember us. Remember that we tried."
She released the transmit button and sat down beside the body of the person who had been her friend for eleven years and watched the stars through the crack in the hull, where the Old Man had sat and watched them, and she understood, finally, what he had been seeing:
Not the stars. Not the light from distant suns. But the dark between them. The dark battle. The thing that happens when human beings are alone in the dark and have nothing to hold onto except the memory of what they used to be.
And she knew, with a clarity that was almost peaceful, that she would be sitting there when the oxygen ran out, watching the stars, remembering, until the dark took her too.
