I.
The clouds over Long Island were thick as cotton in the autumn of 1925, and Charlie Vance was flying through them like a man trying to escape his own shadow.

V.
Charlie met Diana every week after that. They walked on the beach, they talked in her father's garden, they sat in the back room of a tea house in Glen Cove and drank tea that neither of them really wanted. They talked about everything and nothing—books, music, the war (Charlie never talked about the war directly, but Diana learned what she could from the silences), the future (neither of them had one that made sense).

It took the other ten men in your squadron. It took the man you were before you learned to fly. And no machine is going to give them back."
Blackwell stood still. The engines continued to roar. The Icarus II vibrated beneath them. Rain lashed against the hangar doors.
For a long moment, Charlie thought Blackwell might attack him. The mechanical arms were strong enough—stronger than human arms. But Blackwell didn't move. He stood there, staring at Charlie, his face contorted with something that wasn't quite anger and wasn't quite grief.
"My son," he said quietly. "He was in France. With your squadron."
Charlie felt the ground shift beneath him. "I'm sorry."

Charlie didn't know what to say. There was nothing to say.
Blackwell closed his hand. "I built these for him. So that when he came home, he'd have a father who could still hold him. Who could still—" His voice broke. "I built them for a boy who would never walk through that door again."
Charlie stepped forward and put his hand on Blackwell's mechanical shoulder. It was warm from the engines, vibrating with the hum of the idling motors. "I'm sorry, Robert. I'm so sorry."
Blackwell looked at him. And in that look, something shifted. The obsession, the mania, the desperate need to control and transcend and become more than human—it all drained away, leaving behind a tired old man standing in a rain-soaked hangar, holding metal hands that could never hold his son.
He reached out with his right hand—his real hand, the stumps of his left arm pressed against his chest—and touched Charlie's face. "You're a good man, Mr. Vance."
"Please. Call me Charlie."
"Charlie. You need to leave."
"What about you?"
"I need to finish this."
"No, you don't." Charlie gestured at the Icarus II. "This isn't about flying. It never was. It's about keeping him alive. But he's not alive, Robert. And you can't build him back."
Blackwell was silent for a long time. The rain continued. The engines continued to hum.
Then he said, "Help me dismantle it."
VIII.
They worked through the night. Charlie and Blackwell and Friedrich, the three of them taking apart the Icarus II piece by piece, removing engines, detaching wings, unwiring circuits. It was like performing surgery on a living thing, except the thing was already dead and they were just being polite.
By dawn, the hangar was full of parts. The Icarus II was gone. In its place was a collection of metal and wood and wire that looked like the skeleton of something that had never quite lived.
Blackwell sat on a crate in the center of the hangar and stared at the remains of his machine. His mechanical arms hung at his sides, perfectly still.

Blackwell was quiet for a long time. Then he stood up, walked to the hangar door, and stepped out into the rain. Charlie followed him.
They stood under the eaves of the hangar, watching the rain fall over Long Island. The world was grey and wet and ordinary and beautiful.
"I don't know how," Blackwell said. "To live, I mean. Without the machine. Without the work."
"Neither do I," Charlie said. "But we'll figure it out. Together."

IX.

Diana met him at the station. She was wearing a grey coat and a hat with a veil, and she was smiling in the way that made Charlie feel like something inside him had finally come home.
"Where are you going?" she asked.

"Can I come?"
Charlie looked at her. The train was waiting at the platform, its steam rising into the cold morning air. He thought about the war and the flying and the hangar and the rain and the long, dark months of trying to be something he wasn't.

They got on the train together. Charlie didn't look back at Long Island. He didn't need to. The sky was behind him now, and the future was ahead, and for the first time in four years, he wasn't flying away from anything. He was going somewhere.
