Miss Harriet DuPre stood on the porch of the main house and watched the eastern field turn to light. Not the light of sun on water, but something colder and more deliberate, as if the earth itself had decided to reflect instead of absorb, to shine instead of grow.

"The north field went first," said Uncle Ezra from behind her. He was sitting in his wheelchair, or rather the rocker that served as his wheelchair, because Uncle Ezra had not walked in twenty years but still moved from corner to corner of the plantation like a man who owned every inch of it. Which, technically, he did not. But ownership was a complicated thing in Mississippi, and Uncle Ezra understood it better than any DuPre who had ever drawn a deed.

"How big?" Harriet asked.

"Thirty acres. Maybe more. The plow hit glass instead of dirt this morning. Newt broke three teeth on it."

She looked at the eastern field. The cotton plants were there--she could see them, perfectly preserved in their green summer glory. Every boll open. Every leaf unfurled. But they were not cotton anymore. They were something that looked like cotton and caught the light like cotton but was, fundamentally, not cotton. Not alive. Not dead. Something else.

"Dr. Calloway says it's not a mineral," Harriet said.

"Calloway says a lot of things. Most of them involve words I can't pronounce and all of them explain nothing."

Harriet almost smiled. Almost. Aunt Clarice, in the parlor behind them, began to laugh. It was a dry, crackling laugh, like dead leaves in November.

"It's God's收藏," Clarice said.收藏 was a word she'd picked up from a missionary magazine. She liked the way it sounded. "The Lord is collecting His most beautiful creations. And what is more beautiful than cotton? White gold. The blood and sweat of this land. Now He's putting it in a jar."

"It's not God," Harriet said. But she said it without conviction, because she didn't know what it was, and not knowing was the one thing that made her feel, for the first time in her life, like someone else controlled the story.

Calloway arrived at noon. He was a tall man with a nervous disposition and a medical practice in New Orleans that he maintained more in name than in practice. He came to Emerald Grove on weekends, not because he liked the place but because he liked Harriet, and liking her meant tolerating the Delta heat and the mosquitoes and the glass.

He brought instruments. A microscope. A spectrometer. A Geiger counter, which he used out of habit rather than hope. He tested the glass for an hour. He did not find anything.

"It's not glass," he said finally. "Chemically, it resembles silica, but the structure is--I don't have a word for it. It's like a crystal but the crystalline lattice extends beyond the molecular level. It's like the material itself has decided to be ordered, on a scale that shouldn't be possible."

"English, Thomas."

"It's not science, Harriet. I don't know what it is."

She looked at him over the rim of her teacup. "You're a doctor. Your job is to know."

"My job is to heal people. This isn't a person. This is--" He gestured at the field. "This is something else."

"What do you think it is?"

He set down his cup. He looked at her with eyes that were tired and honest and afraid. "I think it's alive."

She put down her cup. "Glass doesn't grow."

"This does."

"How do you know?"

"Because yesterday it was twenty acres. Today it's thirty. It's spreading. And I think--" He hesitated. "I think it's choosing where to go."

Harriet set down her teacup. She set it down very carefully, because if she set it down hard, she might break it, and if she broke it, she might break something else, and she had spent her entire adult life trying not to break things.

She went to the field. She walked to the edge of the glass, where the living earth met the crystalline field. She knelt. She put her hand on the glass. It was warm. Not cold like stone. Not room-temperature like metal. Warm, like skin. Like a forehead with fever. Or a body that was still alive.

She touched it with both hands. She pressed her palms flat against the surface. And she felt it.

Not a vibration. Not a pulse. Something subtler than that. A quality of presence. As if the glass was not just a thing but a state of being, and that state of being was--not hostile, not friendly, but deliberate. Chosen. As if the earth beneath her hands had made a decision to become something else, and was waiting for her permission.

She withdrew her hands. She stood up. She went back to the house.

That evening, she wrote two letters. The first was to Calloway: "If you love me, stay." The second was to every person on the plantation, living or enslaved or somewhere in between: "Come to the main house. Eight o'clock. Bring nothing but yourself."

They came. Not all of them. Some were afraid. Some didn't believe her. Some were too proud. But enough came that the main house filled to the doors, and the doors opened to the gallery, and the gallery filled with faces--white and black and brown, young and old, free and bound, sitting together in the twilight of a plantation that was about to become a memory.

Harriet stood at the head of the long dining table. She had ordered a meal prepared. Not rationed. Not minimal. A meal. Roast chicken. Fresh bread. Collard greens from the garden that would soon be glass. Sweet potatoes. Peach cobbler. The kind of meal that said we are not running out of anything, even though they all knew they were.

Uncle Ezra sat at her right hand. Aunt Clarice in a chair beside him, wrapped in shawls, her eyes bright and unfocused. Calloway at her left. And between them, everyone who had ever worked the land that was about to stop being land.

They ate. They did not speak of the glass. They spoke of the harvest. Of the weather. Of the football game at Ole Miss. Of the baby that Mrs. Watson had delivered last week. Of the sermon that the traveling preacher had given on Sunday. Of small things. Of the things that mattered.

After dinner, Clarice spoke. She had been silent for most of the meal. Now, in the quiet that follows a full table, she said:

"Do you know why it chose Emerald Grove?"

Nobody answered.

"Because we are beautiful," she said. "Not the cotton. Not the house. Us. The mess of us. The cruelty and the kindness and the way we hurt each other and the way we can't stop. The Lord sees this place and He sees how beautiful the mess is, and He wants to keep it. Not destroy it. Keep it. Like a pressed flower. Like a ring in a box. Like a story that ends on the perfect page so it never has to get old and ugly."

Ezra said nothing. He looked at Harriet. She looked at him. She waited for him to speak.

"It's coming for us," he said finally. "All of us. You and me. White and black. Free and not. The Lord's collecting, he says. I say the earth's just turning over a page. And we're the sentence it's writing."

Calloway said nothing. He was a man of science, and science had nothing to say about this.

Harriet looked at each face around the table. She saw fear. She saw resignation. She saw the strange, stubborn courage of people who had built a life on ground that was about to become something else.

"It's beautiful," she said.

And it was. She could see it from the dining room window. The glass field had spread while they ate. It was in the moonlight now, and it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. The cotton plants, preserved in crystal, caught the moonlight and scattered it into a million colors. Blues and golds and pinks, like a prism the size of thirty acres. Like the earth itself was a diamond, and someone had cut it just for her to see.

She stood up. "Let's go see it."

They went. All of them. Every person who had come to dinner, every person who had stayed in the houses around the main quarter, every person who could walk or be carried or was carried. They walked to the edge of the glass. They stood together and looked at it.

And it was beautiful.

The glass reached the main house at midnight. It came through the gallery first. The columns turned to crystal. The railings. The steps. The porch swing where Harriet had sat as a child and watched her father ride out to the fields on horseback.

They did not leave. There was nowhere to go. The glass was not just in the east field. It was in the west field too. And the south. And the north. It was coming from all directions. Not a wave. A sphere. Expanding from the center of the plantation outward. And the main house was at the center.

Harriet sat at the head of the dining table one more time. Calloway sat beside her. Ezra across from her. Clarice in her chair, smiling.

"Coffee?" Clarice asked.

Harriet laughed. It was not a happy laugh. It was not a sad laugh. It was a laugh of recognition, of understanding, of the kind of laugh that comes when you see something so clearly that the only response is to laugh at the absurdity of having not seen it sooner.

"Yes," she said. "Coffee."

Clarice poured. The coffee was good. Strong. Sweet. Just the way Harriet liked it.

The glass reached the dining room at 12:17 AM. It came through the ceiling first. The chandelier froze mid-swing, every crystal pendant catching the last candlelight in a spectrum of color that Harriet would remember until she died, which was, it turned out, right then.

She picked up a piece of cotton from the table. She had plucked it from the tablecloth, or perhaps it had fallen from her dress, or perhaps it was always there, sitting on the linen like a seed waiting for soil.

She put it to her lips and smelled it. Cotton. Earth. Sweat. Rain. The smell of a land that had fed people and broken them and fed them again, generation after generation, through slavery and freedom and everything in between.

"True beautiful," she said.

And then she was glass.

The house became a sculpture. The people became sculptures. The cotton fields became the most beautiful thing in Mississippi.

Three hundred years later, a traveler driving through the Delta passes a place locals call the Glass Prairie. The road curves around it. The signs say keep off the grass. The grass is not grass. It is crystal, stretching to the horizon, catching the sunrise in a thousand colors.

The traveler does not know what it is. He slows down. He looks at it. He thinks it is beautiful.

He drives on.
