# What He Had
## Act I: The Machine (20%)
The machine sat in the basement corner like something that had grown there, like a fungus or a child nobody planned. Hank called it the Mirror because that's what it did—it showed you what was coming, and showing you what was coming was the same thing as making it come, which was the same thing as the machine deciding for you, which was the same thing as Hank losing his mind.
He found it three weeks after the factory closed. The plant on the edge of town had shut down in November, which was to say the owners had locked the doors and taken their money and left and the workers, including Hank, had taken their last paychecks and gone home and sat in their houses and wondered what to do next. The town was Oklahoma City, and the year was 1983, and the sky was the color of a television tuned to a dead channel, which was to say grey and full of static and nothing useful.
Hank was forty-one years old, divorced, alcoholic, and employed by nothing. He lived in a small house on the east side with a dog he'd found wandering the parking lot of the closed factory and a bottle of whiskey on the kitchen table that he drank from in the evenings and sometimes in the mornings when the evenings ran out.
The basement of his house had always been a place he avoided. It was damp and dark and full of things he didn't want to think about—the kind of basement that makes you aware, every time you descend its stairs, of everything you've buried and everything that's buried you. But the heater had died in October, and the basement contained the furnace, and the furnace needed fixing, and fixing it meant going down there, and going down there meant facing the corner where the shadows were thickest and the smell was worst and the things were that you didn't name.
He went down with a flashlight and a wrench and the kind of courage that comes from having nothing left to lose.
The corner held the machine. It was about the size of a microwave, boxy and grey, with a screen and a keypad and a slot that looked like it was designed for paper or cards or something you could feed information into. There were no labels, no manufacturer's mark, no serial number. It looked like something that had been made by someone who didn't want to be found, which in Oklahoma in 1983 was either a government prototype or something worse.
Hank stood in the basement light and looked at it for a long time. The dog sat beside his leg, whining softly, which was the dog's way of saying: *let's go back upstairs, this place gives me the creeps.*
"Me too, boy," Hank said.
He turned to leave. Then he turned back. Then he reached out and pressed a button.
The screen lit up. Green letters on a black background, the kind of display that looked futuristic in 1983 and obsolete by 1985:
*Tomorrow, you will meet Sarah at the Barley Mow.*
Hank stared at the screen. The Barley Mow was a bar on Classen Boulevard, three miles from his house, where he and Sarah had met two years ago, before the divorce, before the drinking got bad, before everything got bad. Sarah was his ex-wife. She lived in Edmond now, with a man named Dale who worked at the airline and treated her better than Hank had, which was not saying much because "better" in Hank's case meant "didn't hit her" and "didn't drink every night" and "didn't forget their anniversary."
He laughed. It was a joke. Some government weirdo had built a machine that told jokes. Or a prankster had left it on his porch with a note that said *congratulations, you've been pranked,* and Hank had missed the note because he was drunk when the package arrived, which was possible because he was drunk when almost everything arrived.
He went upstairs and drank a beer and forgot about the machine.
The next evening, he drove to the Barley Mow. He didn't know why. It was just a bar, and bars were places he went when he wanted to drink alone in public, and tonight was no exception. He pulled into the parking lot at seven, killed the engine, and sat for a moment looking at the neon sign flickering above the door.
Then he saw her. Sarah. Sitting at a table in the corner, talking to Dale. She was wearing a blue dress, the kind of dress she used to wear on dates before dates became things she only did with other men, before she learned that Hank wasn't worth the effort.
His hands tightened on the steering wheel. He watched her for a minute—watched Dale lean across the table and say something that made her laugh, watched her tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, watched the way the fluorescent light caught the gold in her eyes—and then he got out of the car and went inside.
He sat at the bar and ordered a whiskey and watched Sarah and Dale for two hours. At nine o'clock, they left. At nine-thirty, Sarah walked past his table to use the restroom, and their eyes met, and she said, "Hi, Hank," in a voice that was neither warm nor cold, the voice of someone who has decided that neutrality is the kindest thing they can offer, and he said, "Hi, Sarah," in a voice that was neither warm nor cold, the voice of someone who has learned that neutrality is all he has left.
He drove home in silence. In the basement, the machine sat in the corner, dark and silent, its screen black. But he knew, with the kind of certainty that has nothing to do with logic and everything to do with the slow, dawning horror of a man who is realizing that the world is not what he thought it was, that the machine had not been wrong.
It had predicted the future. And in predicting it, had made it happen.
## Act II: The Prediction (30%)
He used the machine for a week.
Not every day. Not obsessively. Just enough to test it, to see if the first prediction had been a fluke, a coincidence, the kind of lucky guess that happens when you're drunk and sad and looking for meaning in a box with a screen.
He fed it a date—November 14, 1983—and pressed enter. The screen flickered, processed, displayed:
*Tomorrow, you will find $20 on the floor of the Barley Mow.*
He went to the Barley Mow the next day, before opening hours, when the place was empty except for Earl, the owner, who was mopping the floor and didn't ask questions because Earl had lived in Oklahoma long enough to know that questions were for people who still believed in answers.
Hank knelt by the table where he'd sat the night before and looked at the floor. There, wedged between the table leg and the linoleum, was a twenty-dollar bill, folded and forgotten and waiting for him to find it.
He picked it up and stood up and felt something shift inside him, something that had been broken since the factory closed and the divorce finalized and the drinking started and the dog appeared and the basement machine grew like a fungus in the corner, and it shifted in a direction he didn't want to follow.
He went home and fed the machine another date. And another. And another. Each prediction was small, specific, verifiable. *You will see a red car crash on I-35.* *You will receive a phone call from your sister.* *You will spill coffee on your shirt.* Each one came true. Every single one.
By the end of the week, he had stopped going to the job center. He had stopped calling his sister, even though the machine had predicted the call and she had made it anyway, which meant the machine didn't just predict the future—it created it, by telling him what would happen and him acting in ways that made it happen, which was to say the machine was a mirror, and a mirror doesn't show you the future, it shows you what you're already doing, only delayed, only reflected, only distorted by the glass between you and yourself.
He understood this on the eighth day, standing in the basement, looking at the machine, feeling the weight of what he was holding in his hands. A mirror. A machine that showed him what was coming by making him see what was already there, the way a reflection shows you your face by bouncing light off glass, the way a prediction shows you your future by making you walk toward it, step by step, until you arrive.
He should have destroyed it. He should have taken the wrench from the utility closet and smashed the screen and ripped the wires and torn the box apart and thrown the pieces in the trash and gone upstairs and drank a beer and sat in his house and watched the evening news and gone to bed and slept and woken up the next morning and lived his life the way people live their lives when they don't have machines that predict the future and make it happen by predicting it.
He didn't. He couldn't. Because the machine had shown him something that week, something he hadn't told anyone, not even the dog, something that lived in the corner of his mind like a splinter he couldn't remove:
*If the machine can predict small things, what can it predict about big things?*
About the economy. About the recession. About the factory closing and the town dying and the sky turning grey and the people leaving and the ones who stayed sitting in their houses drinking whiskey and wondering what to do next.
What if the machine could predict all of that? What if it already had?
He fed it a date—December 1, 1983—and pressed enter.
The screen flickered. Processed. Displayed:
*You will quit drinking on January 15, 1984.*
Hank stared at the screen. His throat went dry. His hands shook. He set the flashlight down on the furnace and sat on the bottom step of the stairs and put his head in his hands and tried not to cry, because crying was for people who had something left to lose, and Hank had lost almost everything, and the machine had just told him when he would stop drinking, which was to say the machine had just decided for him, which was to say the machine was not a mirror, it was a god, and gods don't show you the future, they write it, and you are the ink.
## Act III: The Breaking (35%)
Old Man Henderson died on December 23.
Hank knew Henderson only slightly—the old man lived two houses down, had lived there his whole life, had taught school for forty years at the public school on Northwest Expressway, and had retired three years ago and spent his retirement sitting on his porch watching the neighborhood go to hell one block at a time. Hank had borrowed a lawn mower from him once and returned it late and Henderson had just nodded and said, "Time's a funny thing, Hank. It takes from us all."
The funeral was small. Henderson's wife had died five years earlier. His children lived in Denver and Portland and didn't come unless they had to, and they came because they had to, not because they wanted to, which was to say they came for five minutes, shook Hank's hand because Hank was the only neighbor who'd bothered to show up, and left.
Hank stood by the grave and looked at the casket being lowered into the ground and thought about forty years of teaching children who would never come back to thank him, who would grow up and leave Oklahoma and forget the man who'd taught them to read and write and do math and understand that the world was bigger than the town they'd grown up in and that they were bigger than the town, too, if they had the courage to believe it.
He thought about the machine in his basement and the prediction it had made: *You will quit drinking on January 15, 1984.* Seventeen days. Seventeen days from now, the machine said, and he would stop. Not because he wanted to. Not because he'd decided. Because the machine had said so, which meant it would happen, which meant he didn't have to decide, which meant he could keep drinking for seventeen more days and then the machine would fix it, the way it fixed everything, by making him do what he couldn't do on his own.
He went home and drank.
The next week, he drank more. He drank through Christmas, through New Year's Eve, through the party at the Barley Mow where everyone drank cheap beer and talked about how things used to be and how they'd never be again, and he drank and drank and drank until January 14 arrived, which was the day before the machine's prediction, which was to say the day before he was supposed to quit drinking, which was to say the day before the machine would save him from himself.
He sat in his house on January 14, the bottle of whiskey on the table, the dog at his feet, the machine in the basement glowing softly like a nightlight for a child who was afraid of the dark. He picked up the bottle and drank and drank and drank until the bottle was half empty and his vision was blurry and his hands were shaking and the dog was whining and the walls were closing in and the machine in the basement was waiting, patient as a god, for him to do what it had told him to do.
He went downstairs.
The machine sat in the corner, its screen glowing green in the darkness. Hank approached it slowly, the way you approach a sleeping animal, and looked at the screen. The display had changed. It no longer showed predictions. It showed a single line of text, repeated over and over, filling the entire screen:
*DON'T PREDICT. DON'T PREDICT. DON'T PREDICT.*
Hank stared at it. His mouth went dry. His heart beat too fast. He reached out and touched the screen, and the letters flickered and changed, and for one moment, just one moment, the screen showed him something that was not a prediction but a confession:
*I AM NOT SHOWING YOU THE FUTURE. I AM MAKING YOU THE FUTURE. EVERY PREDICTION IS A CHOICE. EVERY CHOICE IS A PRISON. YOU ASKED ME TO SHOW YOU WHAT COMES, AND I DID. BUT WHAT COMES IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT, AND YOU ARE MAKING IT WRONG.*
Hank pulled his hand back. The screen went dark. The machine sat in the corner, silent and grey and boxy, looking like nothing more than a piece of equipment that had fallen through someone's hands and ended up in a basement in Oklahoma where a divorced alcoholic sat on the bottom step of the stairs and cried.
He cried for a long time. Not the controlled crying of a man who is trying not to be heard, but the ugly, messy, honest crying of a man who has reached the bottom and discovered that the bottom is not an end but a beginning, that when you have nothing left, what you have is nothing, and nothing is the only thing that is truly yours.
When he stopped crying, he picked up the wrench from the utility closet.
He came back downstairs and stood over the machine and raised the wrench and brought it down.
The screen shattered. Glass sprayed across the floor. Wires sparked and smoked and went dark. The box that had predicted his future and made him the future lay broken in the corner, its guts spilled across the concrete like the insides of something that had been alive and was now dead.
Hank stood over it and breathed. The basement was quiet except for the hum of the furnace and the sound of his own breathing and the dog, who had stopped whining and was now sitting beside Hank's leg, watching him with eyes that said: *what now?*
Hank didn't know. He didn't know what now. He knew only that the machine was broken, and the predictions were over, and the future was his again, which was to say the future was nothing, and nothing was what he had, and what he had was enough.
## Act IV: The Unknown (15%)
He walked out of the basement and up the stairs and into his house and sat at the kitchen table and looked at the empty whiskey bottle and picked it up and walked to the back door and threw it in the trash and came back and sat down and put his head in his hands and thought about what to do next.
The dog came and lay at his feet. Hank reached down and stroked the dog's head, feeling the warmth of the animal's fur and the steady rhythm of its breathing, and felt something in his chest loosen, the way a knot loosens when you pull it from the right direction, slowly, carefully, until it comes apart and you are free.
He looked out the back window at the yard. Oklahoma City stretched to the horizon, flat and grey and full of people who were living their lives the way people live their lives when they don't have machines telling them what to do—imperfectly, messily, honestly, with all the uncertainty and risk and possibility that comes from not knowing what comes next.
Hank Calloway sat at his kitchen table in his small house on the east side of Oklahoma City and did not know what would happen tomorrow. He did not know if he would find a job. He did not know if he would stay sober. He did not know if Sarah would ever take his calls again. He did not know if Old Man Henderson's students would ever come back to thank him. He did not know anything.
And for the first time in thirty-one days, since the day he had pressed the button and the screen had lit up and the future had begun to write itself, Hank Calloway knew exactly what he had:
The unknown.
He stood up, walked to the back door, and opened it. The air was cold and clean and carried the smell of rain that hadn't fallen yet but would, eventually, because that's what rain does in Oklahoma—it comes when it comes, and you don't predict it, you just wait for it, and when it arrives, you get wet.
Hank stepped onto the back porch and looked at the grey sky and felt the cold air on his face and smiled, just a little, the way you smile when you've just realized that the thing you were afraid of—the unknown, the uncertainty, the not knowing—was the only thing that had ever been truly yours.
