ACT ONE

The woman who walked into my office wore black like it was a second skin.

That was the first thing I noticed. Not that she was beautiful—though she was, in the kind of way that makes you look twice and then look away because looking too long is dangerous. It was the black. Black dress, black gloves, black hat with a veil that did not quite hide the fact that her eyes were red from crying but she was not crying now. She carried a leather handbag that cost more than my desk, and she moved like someone who had been told that money could solve anything and actually believed it.

"Mr. Vance?" she said. Her voice was low and careful, like she was speaking in a library or a church.

"That depends on who's asking," I said. I did not stand up. You do not stand up for a woman like her. You let them stand over you if they want to. It costs you nothing and it tells them everything.

She sat down without being invited. I noticed her knees stayed together. Women who are afraid keep their knees together. Women who are not keep them apart. She was afraid, but she was not the kind of afraid that makes you run. It was the kind that makes you dig your heels in.

"My name is Vivian Cross," she said. "My husband was a man named Arthur Cross. He was an astronomer. He works—or worked—at the Griffith Observatory."

"I'm listening," I said. I was not. But listening costs nothing.

"He jumped." She said it flatly, like a fact she had repeated so many times she had worn it smooth. "Three weeks ago. He climbed to the top of the dome and he jumped. The police say it was suicide. I do not believe it."

"Why not?"

"Because Arthur would not kill himself." She opened her handbag and took out an envelope and placed it on the desk between us. It was thick. I did not open it. I did not need to. "But he did not look like a man who wanted to kill himself in the weeks before he died. He looked like a man who had seen something. And I want to know what it was."

I looked at the envelope. Then I looked at her. "Madam, I am a private investigator. I find cheating husbands and collect overdue debts. I am not a detective of the heart."

She opened the envelope and took out a stack of bills and laid them on the desk. Five hundred dollars. It was a lot of money in 1947. It was the kind of money that made you forget your principles.

"Five hundred now," she said. "Five hundred when you find the answer."

I put the money in my desk drawer. "What kind of answer are you looking for?"

"Any answer that is not 'he jumped.'" She stood up. She was taller than I expected. "His name was Arthur Cross. He was fifty-two years old. He had been working on a classified project during the war—something called Project Watchtower. He came home changed. Not broken. Changed. Like someone who had been shown a door and walked through it and could not come back the same way." She paused at the door. "He used to talk in his sleep. He would say one thing, over and over. 'They are here. They have always been here. And now they know we are here.'"

Then she was gone. I sat at my desk and looked at the money and thought about whether I should call the police and report a suspicious death or follow a woman who paid too much for too little information.

I picked up the phone and called the one person I trusted, and that was a mistake because the one person you trust is the one person who cannot help you.

"Big" Tom Russell answered on the second ring. Tom was a detective with the LAPD, fifty years old, built like a refrigerator, and the only cop I knew who would answer my calls at any hour.

"Tom, I need a favour."

"Vance," he said. His voice was gravel and coffee. "You sound worried. When you sound worried, something is wrong. What is wrong?"

"I need information on a man named Arthur Cross. Astronomer. Griffith Observatory. Jumped three weeks ago."

There was a long silence on the other end of the line. Not the silence of a man searching his memory. The silence of a man who already knew the answer and did not want to give it.

"Mark," Tom said finally. "Forget it."

"Tom."

"He was part of something, Mark. Something classified. The War Department had him on a project during the war. He came out of it... different. And then he died. And I was told to close the file. So close the file, Mark. For your own good."

I hung up. I looked at the five hundred dollars in my desk. And I picked up my coat.

ACT TWO

Arthur Cross's office at Griffith Observatory was on the third floor, in a building that smelled of old brass and cold coffee. The police had been through it—evidence tags on the desk, photographs on the wall moved slightly out of alignment, drawers pulled open and pushed back with a careless violence that suggested the people who had done it were not looking for anything in particular but wanted the office to look like it had been searched.

I was looking for something in particular. I did not know what it was, but I knew what it was not: it was not a suicide note, because Vivian Cross said Arthur would not kill himself, and women know these things the way dogs know thunder before it arrives.

I opened Arthur Cross's desk drawers. The top one contained pens and paper clips and a half-empty bottle of aspirin. The second contained observation logs—notebooks filled with numbers and sketches of star charts. I flipped through them. Nothing unusual. Just an astronomer doing his job.

The third drawer was locked. I picked the lock with a paper clip and a bit of wire from my pocket. Inside the drawer was a single folder, thick and yellowed at the edges. The label on the folder read: PROJECT WATCHTOWER — CLASSIFIED.

I opened it.

The first page was a memorandum dated 1944, from the Office of Strategic Services to one Colonel Hawthorne. It discussed "electromagnetic anomaly detection" and "potential extraterrestrial signal interception." I had read enough spy novels to recognize the shape of a classified document. The words were serious, the language precise, the implications staggering.

Project Watchtower had been a wartime program to listen for signals from space. Not Japanese radio transmissions. Not German radar. Signals from space. In 1944.

I turned the page. Another memorandum. And another. Each one more alarming than the last. The project had detected something—a repeating signal, coming from an unknown source, with a pattern that suggested intelligence. Not human intelligence. Something else.

And then the memoranda stopped. The last one was dated June 1945, three months after Arthur Cross jumped. It was a single paragraph, typed and unsigned:

"SIGNAL INTENSIFIED. ALL PERSONNEL EVACUATED FROM GRIFFITH STATION. PROJECT SUSPENDED PENDING REVIEW BY HIGH COMMAND. NO FURTHER OBSERVATIONS TO BE MADE. ALL DATA SEALED."

I sat back in Arthur Cross's chair and tried to think. A classified government project. Signals from space. Suspended in 1945. And Arthur Cross, the astronomer who had been part of it, died three months later by jumping from an observatory dome.

The door opened. A man walked in. He was tall and thin and wore a suit that was expensive but slightly out of style, like someone who cared more about books than tailors. He had the face of a Jew who had escaped Europe and carried Europe inside him like a wound that never healed.

"Mr. Vance?" he said. His accent was Eastern European, but his English was perfect. "I am Dr. Erik Neumann. I understand you are investigating the death of Arthur Cross."

"I can investigate whoever pays me," I said. "Who are you?"

"I worked with Arthur. On the project." He sat down without being invited. His hands were shaking. Not much. Just enough that I noticed. "Arthur discovered something, Mr. Vance. Something that the government did not want him to tell anyone. And he paid for his curiosity with his life."

"What did he discover?"

Dr. Neumann leaned forward. His eyes were bright and feverish. "He discovered that we are not alone. And that the others do not care whether we live or die. They simply... exist. And their existence is enough to change everything."

"Where did he find this out?"

"In the signals. The signals from Project Watchtower. Arthur was the first to notice the pattern. He realized that the signal was not random. It was a message. Or something like a message. A description, perhaps, of... of a state of affairs. A fact about the universe. And when he understood the fact, he could not un-understand it. And that destroyed him."

"What was the fact?"

Dr. Neumann looked at me for a long time. Then he shook his head. "I cannot tell you. The government would kill me if I did. And honestly, Mr. Vance, I do not fully understand it myself. But Arthur did. And that is what killed him."

He stood up. "There is a place in Hollywood where people like Arthur Cross go when they want to forget. Or when they want to remember. It is called the Dark Forest. Ask for Mr. Blackwood. He will know what to do."

Then he was gone. I sat in Arthur Cross's chair and thought about signals from space and men who died because they understood something they should not have.

I thought about Vivian Cross and her black dress and her five hundred dollars. And I decided that I did not like the shape of this case. Cases have beginnings and middles and ends. This one had a beginning and then a void where the middle should have been.

ACT THREE

The Dark Forest was not a forest. It was a club on Sunset Boulevard, behind a door with no sign and a bouncer who looked like he had been a prize fighter before his knees gave out. I showed him the business card Dr. Neumann had given me—just a name, "Blackwood," written on the back—and he let me in.

The club was exactly what you would expect from a place called the Dark Forest in 1947 Los Angeles: dark, smoky, and filled with men in suits and women in dresses that showed too much skin. A jazz band played in the corner, and the music was slow and sad and sounded like a man walking home alone at three in the morning.

Mr. Blackwood was behind the bar. He was a big man, broad-shouldered, with a face like a cliff and eyes like ice. He looked at me the way a predator looks at prey—not with hunger, but with calculation.

"Vance," he said. It was not a question.

"That's right."

"Dr. Neumann sent you."

"He mentioned you."

Blackwood poured two fingers of bourbon into a glass and pushed it across the bar. "Drink. You look like you need it."

I drank. It burned. It did not help.

"Arthur Cross was one of us," Blackwood said. He did not look at me while he spoke. He looked at the bottles behind the bar, lined up like soldiers. "A small group. Scientists, officers, journalists. People who heard the signals and understood what they meant. We called ourselves the Watchtower, after the project. We met here, once a month, to share what we knew."

"And what did you know?"

"That the universe is a dark forest," he said. And he said it the way a man might say the sky is blue—as though stating an obvious fact rather than a terrifying one. "Every civilization is a hunter, moving silently through the cosmic woods. If you reveal your position, you will be destroyed. Not out of malice. Out of necessity. Because in a universe where resources are finite and civilizations expand without limit, the only rational choice is to eliminate any other civilization that might threaten you."

I stared at him. "You're telling me that there are aliens out there, and they're hiding from each other, and if they find us, they'll kill us."

"I'm telling you that Arthur Cross figured this out. And once he figured it out, he could not live with it. So he jumped."

"Are there others who know?"

Blackwood looked at me directly for the first time. His eyes were flat and cold. "There are always others, Mr. Vance. The question is not whether others know. The question is whether you want to know too."

I should have walked out. I should have taken my fifty dollars, left the club, and gone home to my apartment and my bottle and my problems that were small and human and understandable.

But I did not walk out. Because I am a detective, and detectives do not walk away from cases. Even when the case is telling them to walk away.

"Tell me more," I said.

Blackwood studied me for a moment. Then he nodded. "There is a frequency," he said. "A repeating pattern that Arthur and his team detected in 1944. It is not a message in any human sense. It is more like... a broadcast. A byproduct of something. A civilization, perhaps, or a natural phenomenon. But the pattern is real. And it is getting louder."

"Where is the data?"

"Sealed by the government. But Arthur kept a copy. I think his wife knows where it is." He paused. "Or she thinks she does. There is a difference."

I left the club at four in the morning. The sky was beginning to lighten, the neon signs flickering off one by one like dying stars. I walked to my car and sat in the driver's seat and thought about a dark forest full of hunters, and the frequency that was getting louder, and Arthur Cross, who had seen the forest and jumped.

And I thought about Vivian Cross, and the money on my desk, and the fact that I had already crossed a line that I could not uncross.

ACT FOUR

I went back to Vivian Cross's house at noon on a Tuesday. It was a small house in Hancock Park, the kind of place with a garden and a porch and a front door that opened onto a hallway lined with photographs of people who were happier than the people living there now.

Vivian answered the door. She had changed out of her black dress into something lighter—a blue cotton dress with white buttons, the dress of a woman who was trying to convince herself that everything was normal.

"Mr. Vance," she said. Her eyes were dry now. The crying was over. "Did you find what you were looking for?"

"I found some of it," I said. "I need to see Arthur's study."

She led me upstairs. The study was small and neat, filled with books on astronomy and astrophysics and a desk that was clean except for a single object: a brass telescope, small and portable, sitting on a stand by the window.

"Arthur used this every night," she said. "Before he jumped, he used it every night. He would look at the sky for hours. I would call him for dinner, and he would say 'one more minute,' and one more minute would become one more hour."

"Did he ever talk about what he saw?"

"No." She paused. "Except for one night. About a week before he died, he came downstairs and he sat at the kitchen table and he stared at it for a long time. And then he said, 'Vivian, do you believe in the darkness?'"

"What did you say?"

"I said, 'Arthur, it's nighttime. Of course I believe in the darkness.'" She smiled, and the smile was thin and brittle. "He smiled too. It was the saddest smile I have ever seen. And then he said, 'No. Not night darkness. The other darkness. The darkness between the stars. The darkness that is not empty but full of things we cannot see.'" She looked at me. "I thought he was ill. I suggested a doctor. He said no doctor could help him now."

I went to the telescope. I looked through it. The sky was bright with sunlight, of course. You cannot see stars in the daytime. But I looked anyway, because looking is what you do when you are looking for something and you do not know what it is.

When I looked up, Vivian was standing in the doorway, watching me.

"You know," she said quietly, "I have been waiting for him to come back since the day he died. Not as a ghost. As a man who made a mistake and is going to walk through that door any minute and say, 'Sorry, Vivian. I got confused for a while. But I'm back now.'"

She looked at the telescope. "Do you think he's back?"

I did not know what to say. So I told the truth. "I don't think he jumped, Mrs. Cross. I think he went somewhere. And I don't think he'll be back."

She nodded slowly. Then she went to her desk, opened a drawer, and took out a small notebook. It was Arthur's handwriting. I recognized the pages from the folder I had found in his office at the observatory.

"This is what he found," she said. "I don't understand it. But I think you might."

I took the notebook. I opened it. The pages were filled with Arthur Cross's handwriting—equations, star charts, and, in the margins, one phrase repeated over and over, like a prayer or a warning:

THEY ARE HERE. THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HERE. AND NOW THEY KNOW WE ARE HERE.

I closed the notebook. I put it in my coat pocket. I walked to the door. And behind me, Vivian Cross stood in her blue dress and watched me leave, and I knew that she would be standing there tomorrow, and the day after that, waiting for a man who had stepped over the edge of the world and did not come back.

I walked to my car. I sat in the driver's seat. I opened the notebook and read the equations one more time. And I understood, in the way that a man understands something that will ruin his life, that Arthur Cross had been right.

They were here. They had always been here.

And now they knew we were here.

I started the car. I drove home. I poured a drink. And I sat in my dark apartment and listened to the city outside, and for the first time in my life, I looked up at the sky and felt small.
