The Whispering Flute
The Yorkshire moors at night were not places for the living. Fog clung to the heather like a shroud, and the wind carried sounds that might have been voices if one chose to believe in such things. Thomas Blackwood knew this, as every schoolteacher in the village knew it, but he had no choice. The road from Haworth was three miles through open moorland, and his cottage stood at the end of it, isolated as his profession isolated him.
He found the weasel caught in a fox trap near the old stone wall that marked the boundary of the Blackwood family estate. It was small and yellow and trembling, its dark eyes fixed on him with an intelligence that made his skin prickle. He should have left it. Every instinct told him to leave it. But the gentleman in yellow who had visited his dreams that night—the one who stood at the foot of his bed and spoke without moving his mouth—had said, in a voice like dry leaves, "The moors keep their own, Thomas. But they reward those who show mercy."
So Thomas freed the creature. It did not scurry away. It sat on its haunches and regarded him with those dark, knowing eyes, then turned and disappeared into the heather.
That night, the gentleman in yellow appeared at the foot of his bed once more. This time, he carried something wrapped in dark cloth. "You have shown mercy," he said. "Take this. It will make you rich beyond your imagining. But remember: every note you play costs you something."
Thomas unwrapped the cloth to find a silver flute, cold to the touch and inscribed with patterns that seemed to shift when he looked at them directly. He blew a tentative note, and the sound that emerged was unlike anything he had ever heard. It was beautiful, yes, but it was also hungry.
He tested it the next evening with the village children, playing a simple melody behind the schoolhouse. Within minutes, the children had stopped playing their games and were standing in a circle, their faces transformed into masks of ecstatic joy. They began to work—digging, carrying stones, pulling weeds from the school garden—with a fervor that lasted until midnight. When Thomas finally stopped playing, they collapsed where they stood, sleeping soundly, and remembered nothing of what they had done.
Word spread, as word always does in small villages. The tenants on the abandoned Blackwood estate came to him, begging to work his land. Thomas played his flute at dawn, and they worked until dusk with a joy that bordered on religious ecstasy. The fields were plowed, the hedges trimmed, the stone walls rebuilt. Crops grew with unnatural vigor. Within a year, Thomas Blackwood was the wealthiest man in the county.
But the gentleman in yellow had been right. Every note cost him something. He felt it in his hands, which had begun to tremble. He felt it in his reflection, which showed a man ten years older than his thirty-two years. The flute was drinking his life, note by note.
The magistrate, a man named Hargreave whose face was permanently flushed from brandy and greed, heard of the flute through his network of informants. He arrived at Thomas's cottage on a Tuesday morning with two constables and a warrant for witchcraft.
"Hand it over, Blackwood," Hargreave said, his eyes fixed on the silver instrument lying on Thomas's kitchen table. "That thing is an instrument of the Devil. And I am its rightful owner."
Thomas refused. He knew what would happen if Hargreave took it. He had seen the way the flute consumed him, and he could not imagine what it would do to a man whose soul was already rotten.
Hargreave took it by force. He had the constables drag Thomas to the gaol and threw him into the darkest cell. Then he rode to the great house at Haworth, the flute wrapped in silk beneath his coat.
At the aristocratic salon that evening, surrounded by the county's most powerful families, Hargreave unwrapped the flute and played.
The effect was instantaneous and catastrophic. The music did not bring joy this time. It brought something darker, something that rose from the deepest wells of human nature and twisted them. Guests began to laugh—wild, unhinged laughter—and then to scream. They tore at their clothes, scratched at their faces, threw themselves against the walls. The music was beautiful, and it was the most horrible thing any of them had ever heard.
By morning, seven people were dead. The rest had permanent scars, both physical and mental. Hargreave was found in the ballroom, his eyes wide and unseeing, the flute clutched in his dead hand. He was tried and executed for witchcraft, though no one could explain how a magistrate could be accused of the very crime he had sought to eradicate.
Mary, Thomas's fiancée, came to the gaol the night before Hargreave's execution. She had been a schoolmistress before she met Thomas, and she understood things that others did not. "The flute must be destroyed," she said. "Not hidden. Not locked away. Destroyed."
They took it to the moors on a moonless night. Mary held a hammer, and Thomas held the flute. He played one final note—a note so beautiful it brought tears to his eyes—and then Mary struck it. The silver shattered like glass, and the sound that emerged was not music but a scream, long and fading, as if something ancient and powerful was dying.
Thomas lived another three years. He was a shadow of the man he had been, his vitality drained, his hands permanently trembling. But he was alive. And on quiet evenings, when the wind blew from the moors and carried the faintest hint of music, he would close his eyes and remember the gentleman in yellow, and wonder if the weasel he had freed had been an angel, or a demon, or something for which humanity had no name.
Mary never married. She took over the schoolhouse and taught the children of the village until she died, thirty years later. Sometimes, when the wind was right, the children would swear they could hear music coming from the moors. Mary would stop teaching and listen, her face unreadable, and then she would say, "The moors keep their own."
