The Garbage

The garbage pile behind the abandoned steel plant in Cleveland was not a place you went unless you had to. It was a landscape of rust and refuse, of shattered glass and waterlogged cardboard and things that had once been useful and were now simply discarded. The air smelled of decay and something chemical, and in summer the flies were so thick you could hear them.

Frank Kovac lived in a shed he had built from pallets and corrugated metal at the edge of the pile. He was forty-five, though he looked older, with a face that had been weathered by years of work that no longer existed. The steel plant had closed three years ago, and with it had gone the neighbourhood, the bar, the life. Frank had lost his job, his wife, his house, and finally his pride, one at a time in an order that he could not quite remember.

The dog appeared one morning in March, scavenging near the edge of the garbage pile. It was a mixed breed of indeterminate size and colour, thin but not starving, cautious but not terrified. Frank had given it a name—Dog, because naming it anything else felt like pretending.

The snake appeared two weeks later. It was white—no, not white. It was albino, Frank would have said if anyone had asked, though nobody had. It was a snake with a genetic condition that made its scales the colour of dirty snow and its eyes pink and nearly blind. It was perhaps four feet long, and it moved across the garbage with the slow, deliberate pace of something that knows the world is not built for it.

Dog and the snake existed in the same space the way two people who live in the same apartment building exist in the same space: neither friends nor enemies, simply occupying the same coordinates in a world that has no particular interest in either of them.

Sometimes Dog would chase away the crows that tried to steal from the snake's scraps. Sometimes the snake would slip beneath Dog's pallet at night when the wind was particularly sharp, and Dog would lie still and let her share the limited warmth. These were not acts of friendship. They were acts of convenience, the kind that happen between creatures who share a territory and have learned, through trial and error, that mutual non-aggression is better than conflict.

Frank noticed none of this. Frank was mostly drunk. He spent his days in the pallet shed, sleeping off the previous night's drinking, and his nights at the bar on Euclid Avenue, drinking to forget the previous day's drinking. He was not a cruel man. He was not a good man. He was simply a man who had been worn down by the kind of economic forces that do not appear in newspapers and do not generate protests, the kind of forces that simply happen, slowly and inexorably, until one day you are living in a shed made of garbage and you do not even notice.

On a Thursday in late March, Frank had been drinking since Tuesday. He was three days into a binge that began with nothing more specific than the fact that Tuesday was a Tuesday and Tuesdays were as good as any other day to drink. He stumbled back to the pallet shed at three in the morning and found Dog lying in front of the entrance, blocking his way.

Frank did not hate the dog. The dog meant nothing to him. But the dog was in his way, and Frank was tired, and the world had become a place where obstacles were solved with the minimum possible effort.

He picked up a stone from the ground—a piece of concrete, really, broken from something that had once been a sidewalk—and he hit the dog. Once. Maybe twice. He does not remember. The dog stopped moving. Frank stepped over it and went into the shed and slept.

In the morning, he did not remember. He woke with a headache and a mouth like sandpaper and the vague sense that something had happened the night before, though he could not say what. He crawled out of the shed and went to the garbage pile to look for anything salvageable—copper wire, half-empty bottles, anything that might fetch a dollar or two at the scrap yard.

The snake was there. She was where she always was, moving slowly across the garbage, her pale body a ghost in the grey landscape. Dog was not.

The snake stayed in the same area for three days. She did not search. She did not mourn. She simply occupied the space where Dog had occupied the space, because that was what creatures do—they occupy spaces until those spaces are no longer available and they must find new ones.

On the fourth day, the smell began.

It was not a dramatic smell. It was not the smell of a story. It was simply the smell of a dead dog left in the Cleveland sun, the kind of smell that makes flies multiply and neighbours complain and the city send someone to deal with it.

The someone was a sanitation worker named Ray, who was paid twelve dollars an hour to deal with things that smelled. He found the dog carcass behind the abandoned steel plant, noted its condition in his logbook, and called animal control.

Animal control came. They took the body. Ray filled out a form. The snake was still there when they left, moving slowly across the garbage, and she continued moving across the garbage after they left, and she continued moving across the garbage for as long as she lived, which was not long—albino snakes in Cleveland do not survive well—but that is a separate story.

Frank went to a different bar. He drank. He slept. He woke. He drank again. The steel plant remained abandoned. The garbage pile remained. The snake remained, for a while, and then she did not.

Nothing happened. No one was punished. No one was redeemed. The dog died, and the snake survived for a few more weeks, and Frank kept drinking, and Cleveland kept being Cleveland, and the garbage kept accumulating, layer upon layer, upon layer.
