The signal arrived on a Tuesday in October, 1923.

Julian Valentine was alone in his apartment on 135th Street, hunched over a desk that had been his father's, listening to a crystal radio set that cost more than most people in Harlem made in a month. The set was his own design, a modification of a military surplus receiver that he'd built with parts ordered from three different cities.

The signal was not supposed to be there.

It came through as a steady pulse, seven points and a pause, repeating every 7.3 seconds. Not Morse code. Not any human language. But mathematical. Precise. Deliberate.

Julian sat very still and listened to the pulse for forty-seven minutes before he began to write.

He was thirty-two years old, the first African American to earn a doctorate in physics from Columbia University, and the only person in the Harlem community who could explain what he was hearing. He had chosen not to explain, not yet. He needed more data. He needed to be certain.

The signal came every night for three weeks. Julian recorded it on graph paper, measured its frequency, analyzed its structure. It was not random. It was not atmospheric interference. It was not human.

It was coming from the direction of Alpha Centauri.

By January 1924, Julian had developed a theory. The signal was not a message in any conventional sense. Julian understood. He was a black man in 1924, presenting a theory about alien life to a white scientific establishment that barely acknowledged his existence. His mathematics were sound, but his identity was not.

So he did something radical.

In October 1924, Julian organized a public lecture at the 135th Street Library. He invited the press. He invited the community. He invited anyone who wanted to hear about the signal from Alpha Centauri.

The lecture was packed. There were students and teachers, musicians and writers, shopkeepers and domestic workers. There were also three scientists from Columbia, sitting in the back row, looking skeptical.

Over the next six months, Julian worked with a group of volunteers—students, musicians, mathematicians, poets—to develop what he called "Cosmological Sociology," a framework for understanding how civilizations might communicate across the vast distances of space. His central thesis was simple: communication between civilizations would not be based on force or deception, but on resonance. On the ability to find common ground in mathematics, music, and meaning.

In January 1925, Julian published his findings in a self-published booklet called "The Harlem Constant: A Mathematical Proof of Extraterrestrial Intelligence." It was distributed freely throughout Harlem and sent to universities across the country.

Most universities did not respond. But the United Nations, then in its infancy, sent a representative.

The representative was a British physicist named Arthur Pemberton, who had read Julian's booklet with growing fascination. He traveled to Harlem in the spring of 1925 and met Julian at the 135th Street Library.

They talked for four hours. Pemberton was skeptical but impressed. He asked difficult questions. Julian answered them all.

He did exactly that. Over the next two years, Pemberton used his connections to get Julian's work presented at scientific conferences in London, Paris, and Geneva. The response was mixed. Some scientists were dismissive. Others were intrigued. A few were convinced.

In 1927, the United Nations established a special committee on extraterrestrial communication. Julian Valentine was appointed as its first director.

He was thirty-five years old. He was the first African American to hold a United Nations position. And he was standing on the roof of his Harlem apartment building, looking up at the night sky, holding a saxophone that his father had left him.

He put the saxophone to his lips and played. It was not a jazz piece. It was not a classical composition. It was something new—a melody that combined the mathematical precision of the signal with the emotional depth of the blues.

As he played, he thought about the people in Harlem who had helped him: Mrs. Delacroix, who had hosted his salons. Marcus, who had played the piano that proved mathematics could be beautiful. The students who had transcribed his calculations. The volunteers who had distributed his booklet.

They had shown him that science was not just about numbers and equations. It was about people. About community. About the shared human (and perhaps not entirely human) desire to connect.

When Julian finished playing, he looked up at the stars. They seemed closer than they had before. Not physically closer, but emotionally. As if they were waiting for him to catch up.

That night, at exactly 11:47 PM, seven radio telescopes around the world recorded a simultaneous increase in the strength of the Alpha Centauri signal. The increase lasted for exactly 7.3 seconds. Then it stopped.

No one could explain it.

Julian could.

He was playing back the melody he had just played on the saxophone. And somewhere, 4.3 light-years away, someone was listening.
