Dark Forest, Carry a Gun
ACT I: THE PARKING GARAGE
The Chinese restaurant on Central Avenue served the kind of General Tso's chicken that was invented by someone who had never been to China and didn't really want to be, but Jack Morane ate it anyway because it was cheap and hot and his apartment didn't have a stove that worked.
He was leaving at midnight, hands in the pockets of his trench coat, thinking about his electric bill and whether he could afford to keep the refrigerator running, when he heard them.
Two men in the parking garage. Not speaking English. Not speaking anything Jack recognized. Speaking in numbers and codes and references to things that did not exist.
"The forest is dark," one said. "And we are all carrying guns."
"The signal changes everything," the other replied. "Once the forest knows we're here, there is no going back."
Jack was not supposed to hear this. He was walking to his car, a 1978 Ford that started more often than not, when a black sedan pulled into the garage behind him. Two men got out. They did not look at Jack. They looked at the two men speaking in codes.
Jack heard a sound like a camera shutter — quick, sharp, final. Then silence.
The two men in codes dropped to the concrete floor like puppets whose strings had been cut. The men from the black sedan did not check their pulses. They did not need to.
Jack got into his Ford. He started it. He drove away. He did not look back.
He knew, with the certainty of a man who had spent twenty years in Army intelligence and another twenty years as a private investigator, that he was now a man who knew too much about something he did not understand.
ACT II: THE FOUR WALLS
The government agent found him three days later.
She was young — too young to be a government agent, which meant either she was very good or she was already dead and did not know it yet. Jack could not tell which.
"Mr. Morane," she said, sitting in his office without being invited. She was wearing a suit that cost more than his car and a expression that cost more than the suit. "My name is Agent Corrigan. I represent interests that are classified at a level you do not have clearance for."
"Then how did you find me?" Jack asked, not looking up from the whiskey glass he was cleaning with a rag that was dirtier than the glass.
"Easy. You are the only person in Los Angeles who was in that parking garage at 11:47 PM on Thursday and did not leave until 11:52 PM and did not call a cab or a friend or a priest." She paused. "You are also the only person who has not been to the police. Which tells me either you are very smart or very stupid. I have not decided which."
Jack set down the glass. "What do you want?"
"We want to know what you heard."
Jack looked at her. "You know I heard something."
"We know two men are dead. We know they were speaking in codes. We know you were there. We do not know what you heard. But we intend to find out."
Jack poured himself a drink. He did not offer her one. "I heard nothing I can use."
"That is not for you to decide." Agent Corrigan stood up. She was shorter than Jack expected, which meant she had to be tougher than most women his size. "There is a program, Mr. Morane. It is called Operation Four Walls. Four men — no, four strategists — have been isolated and given unlimited resources to develop plans against an unknown threat. You are not one of them. You are a variable we did not account for. And variables get eliminated."
"What threat?" Jack asked.
Corrigan's expression did not change. But something in her eyes shifted — a micro-expression, a crack in the armor, the kind of thing Jack had been trained to spot in interrogations twenty years ago.
"You already know more than you should," she said. "The question is whether you will live long enough to know more."
She left. Jack sat in his office and drank his whiskey and thought about the two men in the parking garage and the words that had made him turn his head at exactly the wrong moment.
The forest is dark. And we are all carrying guns.
ACT III: THE EXPOSURE
Big Mike was dead before Jack understood what was happening.
Sergeant Marcus O'Brien — Big Mike to everyone who had ever shared a drink or a badge or a moment of honest conversation in a city that had no use for honesty — had been following Jack for two days, as he always did, because Big Mike looked out for Jack the way a man looks out for the only friend he has in a city of strangers.
They were in Big Mike's car, parked outside a warehouse in the port district, watching a building that Agent Corrigan had told them to watch. Jack did not know what they were watching for. He knew only that someone was trying to kill him and Big Mike was the only person he trusted, and Big Mike was sitting next to him eating a sandwich and talking about his daughter's school play.
"The forest is dark," Jack said suddenly.
Big Mike looked at him. "What?"
"The words. From the parking garage. 'The forest is dark, and we are all carrying guns.' I have been thinking about them. Every day for three days."
Big Mike set down his sandwich. "What about them?"
"They are not about a literal forest. They are about—" Jack stopped. He did not know what they were about. He had been thinking about them for three days and he still did not know what they were about. But he knew they were about something. "They are about a place where everyone is hiding and everyone is armed and the first person to reveal their position dies."
Big Mike was quiet for a long time. Then he said: "That is not a description of a forest, Jack. That is a description of a city."
The exposure happened at midnight.
It started with the newspapers — every newspaper in Los Angeles published the same story at the same time, at exactly midnight, a story that exposed every secret, every conspiracy, every scandal in the city. Government conspiracies. Studio scandals. Mob connections. Political corruption. Everything. All of it. Published simultaneously in every newspaper, every radio station, every movie theater in Los Angeles.
By 12:01 AM, the city was burning.
Jack and Big Mike watched from the car as the first fires started — not big fires, not spectacular fires, but small fires in small places, the kind of fires that happen when every secret is out and every enemy knows exactly where to strike.
"The intelligence," Jack said. "The thing those two men were talking about in the parking garage. Is this it? Is this the intelligence?"
Big Mike shook his head. "No. This is just the beginning. This is just the city. The real intelligence — the thing that changes everything — it is not about the city. It is about something bigger."
"Like what?"
Big Mike looked at him. His eyes were tired. They had always been tired. "I do not know, Jack. And I am not sure I want to."
A bullet shattered the car window. Big Mike moved — fast for a man his size, fast for a man who had been eating a sandwich — and Jack heard the sound of something hitting flesh and the sound of Big Mike gasping.
"Big Mike—"
"Get out of the car, Jack."
"But—"
"GET OUT OF THE CAR!"
Jack got out of the car. He ran. He did not look back. He heard Big Mike's voice behind him, weak but firm: "Do not come back! Do not—"
The words were cut off. Jack ran into the burning city and did not stop running until he reached his office and locked the door and sat on the floor and cried like a man who had just realized that the world was not what he had thought it was and never would be.
ACT IV: THE RAIN
The rain fell on Los Angeles like the sky had decided to wash the city clean.
Jack stood on the balcony of his office, rain falling on his face, a cigarette burning between his fingers, watching the city burn below him. Not all of it — just enough. Just enough to make it clear that everything was changing and nothing would ever be the same.
He held the intelligence in his hand.
It was a single sheet of paper. He did not know how he had gotten it. He did not know who had given it to him. He knew only that it was there, in his hand, a single sheet of paper with numbers and symbols that represented the most devastating intelligence ever assembled — the truth about the forest, the truth about the guns, the truth about the signal.
Corrigan was dead. He had found her body in her apartment this morning, a single gunshot wound to the chest, her classified files scattered across the floor like confetti. Everyone was dead. The government agent. The two men in the parking garage. Big Mike. Everyone.
Except him.
Except the man who had overheard a conversation he was not supposed to hear and carried the weight of it for three days and then carried the weight of it for three more.
Jack looked at the paper. He looked at the burning city. He looked at the rain.
He had a choice. He knew this with the certainty of a man who has spent his entire life making choices in the space between right and wrong. He could publish the intelligence — expose the forest, reveal the guns, tell the world what was really happening. Or he could bury it — burn the paper, let the lies continue, preserve a peace built on ignorance.
Or he could do something else entirely.
Jack dropped the cigarette. It fell from his fingers, caught in the rain, and went out before it hit the ground.
He did not publish. He did not bury.
He walked into the rain, leaving the paper on the desk.
The reader never learns what he chose.
The rain washes the paper clean.
