Sixty Seconds
The motel sign flickered. Three of the eight letters were out, so it read "L DGE INN" instead of "LARGE INN," which was fitting, because the only thing large about the place was the gap between what it promised and what it delivered.
Room 3 was thirty by twelve feet, with a double bed that had a spring poking through the mattress near the foot, a bathroom that smelled of bleach and something else, and a window that looked out onto the parking lot and the Main Street traffic and, on clear days, the skeletal remains of the General Steel plant three miles east, where Ray had worked for seventeen years before they closed it and took the town with it.

At the poker table: win enough to cover the motel rent. Forty dollars a week. That was the number. Forty dollars, the electric bill, the food, the bus fare to the community clinic for his Xanax (the doctor said it was for "anxiety management," which was the doctor's way of saying "take this and don't ask questions about why you're anxious").
At the grocery store: avoid the produce that was about to go bad. He'd reach for a head of lettuce, the world would go grey, he'd see a fly land on it, and he'd go back sixty seconds and reach for a different head.

"Take it," he said. "Take everything. Just don't—"
The taller man swung the gun toward him.

The hospital was white and smelled of antiseptic and the nurse who tended him was kind, which was worse than unkind, because kindness made him feel guilty for being here at all. He was thirty-four years old and he was in a hospital because he'd thrown himself in front of a bullet for a woman who didn't owe him anything, and the doctor said the bullet had missed the artery by a quarter inch, and a quarter inch was the difference between a scar and a corpse, and Ray thought about that a lot.
Maria came the next day. She sat in the plastic chair by his bed and held his good hand and cried, and Ray looked at the ceiling and tried not to say anything stupid.
"Why?" she asked. Three times. Three different ways. "Why did you do that?"
"I don't know," he said. Each time. Same answer.
On the fifth day, they discharged him. Big Tony picked him up in his truck and drove him back to the motel and helped him out of the truck and up the stairs and into Room 3, and said, "You're not playing poker for a week. That's an order."
Ray nodded.
On the seventh day, he went back to the store. Maria was there. She didn't say anything. She just handed him a broom and pointed at the floor, and he started sweeping, and the bell above the door jingled, and a customer came in, and everything was the same, and nothing was the same.
He still got the grey sometimes. Not often. Maybe once a week now. He'd be making coffee or watching TV or looking out the window at the parking lot, and the world would go grey for sixty seconds, and then come back, and he'd be standing there, alive, with a shoulder that ached when it rained and a life that was exactly the same as it had been before, except that he knew, now, what sixty seconds could do.
Not much. Not enough to change the world. Not enough to get his job back or his family back or the factory back or the town back.
But enough to save one person.
That was sixty seconds. That was all he had. That was all anyone had.
He swept the floor. The bell jingled. The sun came up over the parking lot and the skeletal factory and the flickering sign that read "L DGE INN" and Ray Kowalski kept sweeping, because that's what you did. You swept the floor. You lived in the sixty seconds you had. And when it mattered, you chose.
