The magnolias bloomed in April, as they always did, their white flowers heavy and sweet and indifferent to the fact that the house beneath them was rotting from the foundation up. He looked at the sky, at the place where the biplane had disappeared, at the stars that looked exactly the same as they had looked a thousand nights ago and would look a thousand nights from now.
"South," he said. "Somewhere south."
She was silent for a long time. Then: "Do you think it will come back?"
Silas thought of his grandfather's letter—let it go. He thought of Abdullah's engine, which sang instead of burned. He thought of a sky that belonged to no empire and no army and no man.
"No," he said. "I don't think it will come back."
"Do you mind?"
He looked at her—this young woman who had come to sort her grandmother's things and had found a mystery instead, who had read letters written in a dead man's hand and understood them perfectly. He looked at her and saw the Durand line continuing, not in his own enormous frame but in her sharp angles and restless eyes and the way she stood in the dark without fear.
"I designed nothing," he said. "I maintained nothing. I am just the man who kept the door open."
She nodded, and they stood together in the hangar doorway, watching the sky where a biplane built by a French pilot and an African engineer was flying south through a Mississippi night, carrying with it the last flight of a man who had asked the sky to move aside and the sky had obeyed.
The sky does not belong to anyone. It belongs to those who are willing to ask it to move.
