ACT I
I didn't ask to be Daniel's assistant. He asked me. Or rather, he looked at me in the way that people look at things when they need something and you happen to be standing there.
"I need someone," he said. It wasn't a question. It was a statement of fact, the way you'd say the sky is grey.
I was twenty-six, out of work, and living in a basement apartment in Brooklyn that smelled permanently of damp concrete and other people's cooking. I mentioned it to Mrs. Gable once. "He's pushing himself too hard," I said.
Mrs. Gable looked at me with eyes that had seen this pattern before, in other people, in other movements, in other young men who carried the weight of other people's problems until their backs broke. "They always notice the cost last," she said.
The cost, I learned, wasn't physical. Daniel was strong. He was healthy. He was, by all outward measures, a very capable young man. ACT III
It happened on a Thursday, which is always what happens in these stories, because Thursday is the day before everything changes.
A developer had bought the block where the factory stood. Not just the factory—the whole block. Twelve buildings, forty families, three small businesses, the community center where the teenagers hung out after school. The developer had been buying properties quietly for six months, and Daniel had been too busy with other things to notice until it was too late.
When he found out, he moved. Fast. He organized the tenants. He found legal precedent. He stood in front of the building with a megaphone and a group of fifty people and he looked the developer's lawyers in the eye and he told them, clearly and firmly and without raising his voice, that they were not going anywhere.
It lasted three days.
On the fourth day, the city issued an order. The buildings were condemned. Not by the developer—by the city. Structural violations that had apparently existed for years and had apparently only just been discovered. Forty families, evicted in forty-eight hours. Three small businesses, destroyed. The community center, closed.
Daniel stood in front of the building with the megaphone and read the order. His hands were shaking. Not from fear. From something worse. From the realization that he had been playing a game whose rules he didn't understand, against opponents who weren't even his enemies.
The city wasn't his enemy. The developer wasn't his enemy. They were both just pieces on a board that someone else had set up, and every move he made had been anticipated, managed, and ultimately reversed.
He dropped the megaphone. It hit the pavement with a crack that sounded like a bone breaking.
I stood beside him. I was the only one who stayed. Everyone else had gone—Mrs. Gable to her apartment, Mr. Park to his car, Sister Margaret to the church. Everyone except me.
I am just the assistant. The observer. The one who was asked to come along and wasn't smart enough to ask why.
I watched Daniel look at the condemned buildings, at the families packing their lives into cardboard boxes, at the developer's men standing smugly behind the police line, and I understood something that I have never been able to unlearn: the most painful thing in the world is not losing. It is watching something you believe in die while you stand there, able to do absolutely nothing.
ACT IV
I still live in Brooklyn. I still work—nothing glamorous, nothing stable, the kind of work that pays the rent and doesn't ask questions. Daniel moved to another neighborhood six months after the condemnation. I don't know what he does now. I don't know if he's still fixing things.
Sometimes I walk past the block where the factory stood. There's a construction site now. A new building going up. Glass and steel, forty stories of nothing that anyone needs.
I think about Daniel. I think about the way he looked when he dropped the megaphone. I think about the cost, which he noticed last and will carry forever.
I think about the fact that I was there. That I saw it. That I did nothing.
And I wonder if that makes me any better than the people who caused it.
Maybe. Maybe not. But I know this: I will never stop seeing it. The cost. The game. The board. The pieces. The hands that move them.
I am just a cleaner. I clean up what's left after the fighting is done. And the fighting never stops.
