The Things That Remain
The bayou doesn't forgive. It takes slowly, patiently, the way a spider takes a fly—not with violence but with inevitability. The water rises and lowers, and the cypress trees drink it and exhale it as mist, and the land shifts imperceptibly, grain by grain, toward the Gulf.
Maybelle Beauregard knew this. She had known it since she was small enough to sit on her mother's lap and watch the water lap at the porch steps. Her mother would say, "The bayou remembers everything, child. Every drop of rain, every footstep, every tear. It keeps them all."
Maybelle did not believe her mother until she inherited the Beauregard estate—six hundred acres of swamp and cypress and a main house that was falling apart with the slow dignity of something that had once been grand and had forgotten how to stop being so.
The house had five bedrooms, none of which kept out the rain. It had a library containing three hundred books, most of them about things that had happened before the Civil War. It had a garden that was no longer a garden but a swamp that had learned to grow magnolias.

THE SCHOOL

ACT III: THE OLD MAN
Uncle Rufus was seventy-five and had been digging for as long as Maybelle had known him. He was the Beauregard family's gardener, a title that implied a certain amount of respectability that his actual work—the digging—did not quite merit.
He dug everywhere: in the garden (which was really a swamp), under the porch, along the bayou bank, and most persistently, beneath the main house itself. He dug with a small hand shovel and a patience that Maybelle found both admirable and slightly alarming.
"What are you looking for?" she had asked him once, standing at the edge of the hole he was currently occupying beneath the library.
"Answer," he said, without looking up.
"What kind of answer?"
"The kind that's down here." He tapped the shovel against something hard—a rock, or maybe a root, or maybe something else. "Everything important is down here. Up here," he said, gesturing at the house, the trees, the sky, "it's just decoration. Down here is the real stuff."
He had shown her once—the crystals. Blue-green stones, warm to the touch, that he had found thirty feet down in a cavity behind a wall of clay. They were not diamonds, not quartz, not anything he could identify. "Something new," he had said. "Something the Earth made when it was tired of making normal things."
Maybelle had put one on her windowsill, and when the afternoon sun hit it, it threw blue and green patterns on the wall that looked like water. She had liked them. She looked at them every afternoon.
One evening, Uncle Rufus came to the house and asked to see Maybelle in the library. He was holding a piece of the crystal in his hand, and it was glowing—a faint, pulsing blue light, like a heartbeat.
"I had a dream," he said, sitting down in one of the library's terrible Victorian chairs. "I dreamed that I went all the way down. Past the clay, past the rock, past the water. THE TRIAL
It happened on a Thursday in August. The air was thick—bayou thick, the kind of humidity that turns your clothes into a second skin and makes every breath feel like breathing soup. Maybelle was sitting on the porch, reading a book about her grandmother's life, when the light changed.
It was not a dramatic change. The sky did not darken, the wind did not rise. But the light—that was different. It became crystalline, transparent, as though the air itself had turned to glass. Maybelle could see through the trees to the bayou beyond, and through the bayou to the land on the other side, and through the land to something that was not the land at all but a structure—vast, geometric, made of light.

"Keep answering," Sister Agnes said. She didn't know why she said it. She didn't know who was asking the questions or why the questions felt important. But she knew, with a certainty that transcended understanding, that the answers mattered.
"Newton's First Law," she said. "An object at rest stays at rest."
"State Newton's First Law," a voice said. It was not a human voice. It was not a voice at all. It was a pattern of light and sound and something else that Sister Agnes's brain translated into language.

The children repeated it. Six voices, in the bayou's thick air, saying words that had been written by a man three hundred years ago in a country a thousand miles away, and those words were enough.
The light faded. The crystalline transparency dissolved back into humid August air. The children blinked. The chalkboard was just a chalkboard again.
"Did you guys feel that?" Etienne asked.
"I felt something," Marie-Louise said. "I can't explain it."
Sister Agnes looked at the six children—at the light still lingering in their eyes—and thought: we just saved the world. And she knew she was right, even though she couldn't explain how.
In the library, Maybelle found Uncle Rufus asleep in the terrible Victorian chair. The crystal on the table was dark. She covered him with a blanket, and when she looked out the window, the bayou was the bayou again—green, still, patient, remembering everything.
