Running Deer died three days later. The bullet had gone through her shoulder and nicked an artery. Infection set in before a doctor could arrive. Jerry sat by her bed in the cabin and held her hand and listened to her breathe.

On the last morning, she opened her eyes and looked at him. She said something in Shyenne. He didn't understand.

Sarah, who had learned a few words, translated: "She says, 'Tell the wind I'm going home.'"

Jerry nodded. He didn't know what to say. So he said nothing.

Running Deer closed her eyes and didn't open them again.

Jerry never married. He expanded his ranch over the next decade, buying adjacent land when the owners couldn't pay their taxes. By 1910, he controlled three thousand acres and employed twelve men. He paid them well and treated them fairly, and they stayed with him longer than they stayed with other ranchers.

Every autumn, he went to the place where Running Deer died. He stood there for a day, sometimes two, and when he returned, he left a bundle of wildflowers on the ground. The settlers asked him about it. He never explained.

Sarah never married either. She stayed in the territory and opened a second school in Denver that taught both white and Native children. She and Jerry corresponded for twenty years. At the base of his grave, someone had placed a bundle of wildflowers.

Jerry didn't know who had done it. He would never know.
