(Style: Psychological Thriller)

The ice is the only thing that doesn't lie.

I am Kane, and I am the last man in the bunker. I can hear the wind howling above the reinforced steel doors, a sound like a thousand ghosts screaming for entry. But there is no one left up there. There hasn't been for a long time.

We thought we were the masters of the new world. We were the "Commanders," the children who had mastered the art of the military game. We spent three years fighting for the "Sugar Cities," treating the world as a giant chessboard. We thought the nuclear silos were just props, dormant relics of a dead age that we could use as threats to keep the other factions in line.

We played with the fire of the gods because we were too young to remember that fire burns.

It happened during the Siege of the North. A miscalculation. A glitch in a legacy system we didn't fully understand. A single, accidental command sent through an ancient fiber-optic cable.

I remember the flash. It wasn't one bomb; it was a chain reaction. The automatic defense systems of the old world woke up and decided that the only way to protect the planet was to sterilize it.

In a matter of hours, the sky turned a bruised purple, and then a blinding, oppressive white. The atmosphere collapsed. The oceans froze. The world became a tomb of ice.

Now, I sit in the dim light of the emergency lamps, watching the oxygen gauge. 4%. 3%.

The silence is the worst part. It's not a peaceful silence; it's a predatory one. It eats at your mind, filling the gaps with the voices of the people you killed in the name of a "game." I can see them in the corners of the room—the boys I betrayed, the girls I left to freeze in the trenches.

They aren't ghosts. They are just reflections of my own guilt, magnified by the claustrophobia of the bunker.

I found a diary in the archives yesterday. It belonged to a scientist from the Before Time. He wrote about the "Fermi Paradox"—the question of why the universe is so silent despite the probability of alien life. I finally understand the answer.

The universe is silent because every civilization eventually finds the "Zero Hour." Every species reaches a point where its technology outpaces its wisdom, and it accidentally deletes itself.

We weren't a special generation. We weren't the "chosen ones." We were just the final, clumsy mistake.

I look at the oxygen gauge. 1%.

I wonder if there is anyone else left, in some other bunker, in some other corner of the frozen waste. I wonder if they are also sitting in the dark, listening to the ghosts.

I reach for the manual override switch. I could try to open the doors, to step out into the white void and feel the cold for one last second. Or I could just sit here and wait for the air to run out.

I decide to wait. There is a certain dignity in the end. A certain honesty in the dark.

The lamp flickers. The air grows heavy. I close my eyes and imagine a world where I was just a boy, and the only war I fought was with my imagination.

Zero.
