The Golden Countdown

The Morse code came through Catherine Delaney's radio at midnight.

She was twenty-two years old and the only woman in the New York Wireless Engineering Company, which meant she had learned very early to be twice as good as everyone else and never let them see her sweat. The Morse code was weak—faint, intermittent, like someone sending from the edge of range. But Cat could read it.

DOT-DOT-DASH-DOT. THE. DASH-DOT-DOT-DOT. NEXT. DOT-DOT-DOT. ONE.

She wrote it down on a scrap of paper, her pen moving with the steady rhythm of someone who had spent years translating the invisible language of the air into something the eye could see.

THE NEXT ONE IS NOT REAL. BUT THE NEXT NEXT ONE MIGHT BE.

Cat stared at the message and felt something cold move through her chest. She had been monitoring amateur radio frequencies for three months, looking for patterns, for signals that didn't fit the normal noise of a city that never stopped talking to itself. New York was a symphony of transmissions—commercial broadcasts, naval communications, private operators, police dispatches. But this message was different. It was sent on a frequency that no one should have been using, at a time when no one should have been listening, with a code that was too precise, too deliberate, to be accidental.

She picked up the phone and dialed the number she knew by heart.

James O'Sullivan answered on the second ring. He was a former military aviator—flew observation missions over France during the war, came back with a limp and a look in his eyes that made most women uncomfortable. Cat had never been most women.

"Cat," he said. His voice was rough, like he'd been drinking or not sleeping or both.

"I got a message," she said. "On the emergency frequency. Someone's sending Morse code from inside Madison Square Garden."

There was a long silence on the other end of the line. Then: "The Garden's hosting the Peace Exposition tomorrow. All the arms dealers and politicians and press in one room."

"I know," Cat said. "That's why this matters. Someone's trying to tell us something."

Jimmy sounded tired. "Or someone's trying to waste our time."

"Either way, I want you to come look at this."

Madison Square Garden at two in the morning was a cavern of shadows and echoes. The great hall, usually pulsing with the energy of sporting events and concerts, was empty and echoing. Cat had been inside before—once, during the day, when she'd come to inspect the wiring for a radio demonstration. She remembered the scale of it, the way the light fell through the high windows in golden shafts, the sense of being inside a machine designed to hold thousands of people and make them feel like individuals.

Now it was dark and cold and full of ghosts.

Jimmy arrived in a raincoat and a hat pulled low. He moved through the Garden with the careful grace of someone who had learned to be quiet in dangerous places.

"Where'd the signal come from?" he asked.

Cat pointed toward the upper gallery. "Up there. Near the old press booth. The signal was weak, but the direction was clear. Whoever sent it was close."

They climbed the stairs together. Jimmy's left leg dragged slightly with each step—the war had taken something from him that physical therapy couldn't replace. Cat kept her distance, not out of coldness but out of respect. She had learned not to offer pity to men like Jimmy. Pity was the one thing they couldn't absorb.

The press booth was a narrow room at the top of the Garden, with windows that looked out over the empty arena floor. On the desk inside, Cat found a small brass device—a radio transmitter, homemade, with wires spooling out of it like the guts of some mechanical creature.

"It's still warm," she said.

Jimmy knelt beside it. "Used recently. Hours, maybe."

Cat examined the transmitter's settings. "It's configured to send on a frequency that shouldn't be in use. Amateur operators don't have clearance for this band. Someone with military training set this up."

Jimmy looked at her over his shoulder. "You think it's one of the boys? From the war?"

"I think," Cat said slowly, "that whoever built this device knew exactly what they were doing. And they wanted us to find it."

The Peace Exposition opened at nine the next morning. By eight, the Garden was filling with the kind of people who made Cat's skin crawl. Arms dealers in tailored suits, politicians in black frock coats, military attachés from every European capital. They moved through the exhibition halls like sharks in shallow water—grinning, shaking hands, calculating the value of everything they saw.

Jimmy and Cat split up. Jimmy would work the floor, talking to people, listening. Cat would stay in the press booth and monitor the radio frequencies for any sign of the transmitter's operator.

By noon, Jimmy had collected a list of names. Arms dealers with names like Harrington and Vanderbilt. Politicians with names like Murphy and O'Donnell. And one name that made him pause: Senator William Ashford, chairman of the Military Affairs Committee.

Ashford was everywhere in the newspapers lately. Pushing for increased defense spending. Advocating for a new weapons program that the scientific community had labeled dangerous and unnecessary. Jimmy had read the reports. The program involved a type of explosive that could level an entire city block. Ashford called it "the future of American defense." Cat, when Jimmy mentioned her name, called it "a way of ending civilization."

At three in the afternoon, Cat sent Jimmy a message on the internal telephone system.

"Jimmy. New signal. Different frequency. It's a location code."

Jimmy was on the second floor, talking to a representative from a steel manufacturing company. He excused himself and ran for the stairs.

When he reached the press booth, Cat was staring at a fresh transmission.

"Seat block 12," she said. "Row C. Near the senator's platform."

Jimmy's jaw tightened. "That's where Ashford will be speaking."

Cat looked at him. "You think someone's going to try to assassinate him?"

"I think," Jimmy said quietly, "that whoever built that transmitter doesn't want to assassinate anyone. They want to be heard."

They found the second device at four o'clock. It was in a locker near the senator's dressing room—same design as the first, same chemical timer, same delay mechanism. But this one was different. Attached to it was a small envelope, and inside the envelope was a document.

Jimmy read it and felt the blood drain from his face.

"It's a research proposal," he said. "For the new weapons program. Ashford's been funding it for two years. It's not just a proposal—it's a full technical specification. Someone stole it."

Cat took the document and read it herself. Her hands were steady, but her eyes were wide. "This is exactly what the scientific community warned about. An explosive that could destroy an entire city. And Ashford's been pushing for it in secret."

"Who has access to this?" Jimmy asked.

Cat thought for a moment. "Someone inside the military. Someone who knows about the program and disagrees with it."

They spent the next two hours searching the Garden for the transmitter's operator. They checked every corridor, every storage room, every service entrance. They found two more false devices—both decoys, both designed to waste their time. But by six o'clock, the Garden was filling up for the evening session, and they had no lead on the operator's location.

At seven-thirty, Jimmy was standing on the platform where Senator Ashford would speak. He was watching the crowd, scanning faces, when a hand touched his shoulder.

He turned. A young man stood behind him—early twenties, thin, with eyes that were too bright, too intense. He wore a worker's uniform, but his hands were too clean, too educated for manual labor.

"Mr. O'Sullivan," the young man said. "My name is Daniel Cross. I was a radio operator in the war. Under Captain Hayes."

Jimmy felt something cold move through his chest. Captain Hayes had been his squadron leader. He had died over France, and Jimmy had been the one to tell his mother.

"You worked for Senator Ashford," Jimmy said. It wasn't a question.

"For two years," Daniel said. "I built the communication systems for his offices. And I saw what he was doing. The weapons program. The secret funding. The lies."

"Why come to us?"

"Because you're the only people who would listen. The press won't publish this. The government won't investigate it. But you—you've both seen what weapons do to people. You know what this program means."

Jimmy looked at the crowd. Thousands of people, most of them there to see the exposition, unaware that a man was standing on their platform holding a document that could change the course of American history.

"What do you want me to do?" Jimmy asked.

"Publish it," Daniel said. "Let the people decide."

Jimmy looked at Cat. She was standing at the edge of the platform, her radio transmitter in her hand, her face unreadable. She gave him a small nod.

At eight o'clock, Senator Ashford began his speech. And from the press booth above, Catherine Delaney transmitted the full text of Daniel Cross's document on every available frequency—commercial radio, naval communications, amateur bands. By midnight, every major newspaper in America had a copy. By morning, the story was everywhere.

Senator Ashford resigned within a week. The weapons program was suspended pending investigation. And Daniel Cross disappeared, as quietly as he had appeared.

Jimmy and Cat stood on the steps of the Garden that night, watching the city lights flicker on one by one.

"Do you think it matters?" Jimmy asked. "What we did tonight?"

Cat thought about it. "The world doesn't change because of one story. But maybe—just maybe—it changes because of a hundred stories. And tonight, we told one of them."

Above them, a radio broadcast played a jazz song. The city hummed with energy and possibility and the terrible, beautiful hope that tomorrow might be different from today.
