Giuseppe sat on the cracked concrete floor and stared at his hands, which were full of bottle caps that had suddenly become worthless. He was eleven years old, and for the first time in his life, he understood the word depression. It was not a word from a newspaper or a concept discussed by men in dark suits on radio programs. It was a physical thing, a hollow space in the chest where hope had been sitting only moments before.

Evelyn tried to hold things together. She called emergency sessions on the windowsill, where she sat like a queen holding court in a castle that was slowly sinking into the sea. She proposed solutions -- rationing, new currency backed by Marcus's stone, a return to barter -- but the children had grown tired of governing themselves. The games no longer felt like games. Rock-paper-scissors, once a mechanism for resolving trade disputes, now felt like a childish absurdity, a parlor trick dressed up as statecraft.

She stood on the crate where the playing cards had first been laid out as a constitution, and she spoke with a clarity that cut through the dust and the doubt and the terrible, growing awareness that the Starfire was closer now, that the sky had begun to change in ways that no map could chart. "We are kids," she said. "And we're exactly what we need to be."

The turning point came not from a grand speech or a dramatic revelation, but from a decision so simple it almost didn't count at all. Evelyn stopped trying to be a president and started being a friend. Giuseppe stopped trying to manage an economy and started sharing his bottle caps. Marcus stopped carrying his stone around like a talisman and placed it back on the crate, where it belonged. Fatima stopped drawing borders and started drawing stars.

They learned, in those final weeks before the Starfire's light began to change the sky, that seriousness is not the opposite of play. It is play's deepest form -- the kind that happens when you understand that the game matters not because it is serious, but because you are.

ACT IV: AFTERTASTE

The rocket was the last thing they built together, and it was magnificent in the way that only things built by children who believe they can change the world can be magnificent.

It was not a beautiful rocket. It was a beautiful thing. There is a difference, though the adults, had they been there to see it, would never have understood the distinction.

Evelyn stood on the windowsill and watched it disappear. She was thirteen years old, and she would not live to see her fourteenth birthday, not in any world that made sense. But standing there, with the city spread below her like a sheet of silvered glass and the memory of a republic built on playing cards and bottle caps still warm in her chest, she felt something that was not quite happiness and not quite sorrow, but something that lived in the space between them, something that might have been hope, or might have been the thing hope becomes when it has nothing left to lose.

Below them, the city continued its endless dance, unaware that on the top floor of an abandoned skyscraper, a group of children had built a nation and launched it into the stars, and that this, in the end, was perhaps the most serious thing anyone had ever done.
