The Midnight Signal
I.
The woman walked into his office at eleven on a Tuesday, which was the kind of hour that told Jack Morane everything he needed to know before she even spoke. Late enough that respectable people were home in bed. Early enough that desperate people still had somewhere to be. She was dressed in black silk that cost more than his monthly rent, with pearls at her throat and fear in her eyes.
"Mr. Morane?" Her voice was smooth, trained, but underneath it Jack heard the tremor. The kind of tremor that comes from knowing something you can't un-know.
"That depends on who's asking," Jack said. He didn't stand. Standing was for people who had something to prove, and Jack had long ago accepted that he had nothing to prove to anyone.
She sat down without being invited, placed a manila envelope on his desk, and opened it. Inside were photographs. Grainy, black-and-white photos of three men. All scientists. All dead. All with expressions on their faces that looked like they'd seen something that turned their souls to ice.
"I need you to find out what killed them," she said.
"I'm a private investigator, Mrs.—"
"Cross. Vivian Cross." She leaned forward, and for a moment the dim light from the hallway caught her face in a way that made her look almost beautiful. Almost. "I work for an international scientific commission. We've been monitoring certain... anomalies. And these three men were investigating the same anomalies when they died."
"Suicide?"
"Officially, yes. Unofficially—" She stopped, glanced at the door, then back at him. "Unofficially, they died because they understood something. And understanding that thing is a death sentence."
Jack picked up the top photograph. The man in it was middle-aged, balding, with the tired face of someone who had spent too many years looking at things he couldn't explain. In the photo, he was sitting at a desk, surrounded by papers and books, staring directly into the camera with an expression that Jack could only describe as terror.
"How much?" he asked.
Vivian placed a stack of bills on the desk. It was more money than Jack had seen in six months. "Half now. Half when you tell me what you found."
II.
The first stop was the California Institute of Technology, where the dead man—Dr. Harold Finch—had worked. Jack wasn't welcome, but he'd been a cop once, long ago, before the war had taken his left knee and his right eye and turned him into a man who drank too much and slept less. He knew how to work a badge, even a faded one.
Finch's office was exactly what Jack expected: cluttered, personal, lived-in. A half-empty coffee mug on the desk. A photograph of a woman and two children on the wall. Books stacked in precarious towers. And in the bottom drawer, locked but not well, a notebook filled with equations and diagrams that meant nothing to Jack but everything to whoever had written them.
He didn't understand the math. But he understood the handwriting. It started neat, controlled, professional. By the last pages, it was shaking. Scrawled. Desperate.
And on the final page, written in a hand that looked like it was moving while the writer's heart was breaking:

"Who are you?" Jack asked.

"Who are you?" Jack asked again.
The line went dead.
III.
Vivian Cross called him that night. "Mr. Morane, I need to speak with you. It's urgent."
He met her at a bar on the West Side, a place with dim lighting and no questions. She was already there when he arrived, sitting alone at a corner table, drinking something dark and strong.
"You went to Caltech," she said. It wasn't a question.
"I went where the bodies were buried."
She set down her glass. Her hands were shaking. "You can't continue this investigation. Those scientists died because they discovered something. Something that powerful people would very much like to remain undiscovered."
"Like what?"
She looked around the bar, then leaned across the table. Her voice was barely a whisper. "They're not from another planet, Mr. Morane. They've always been here. In our solar system. Waiting. Watching. And they've been communicating with each other for millions of years, building something, preparing for something that we can't possibly understand."
Jack stared at her. "You're telling me there are aliens in our solar system and nobody knows?"
"Not aliens," she corrected. "Something older. Something that was here before humanity crawled out of the ocean. And they've been playing a game. A game with rules so ancient and so cruel that anyone who understands them goes mad. Or dies."
"Then why are you telling me this?"
"Because the game is changing. And you're already involved, whether you want to be or not."
She slid another envelope across the table. Inside was a single sheet of paper with an address in New Jersey and a time: 3 AM. Tomorrow.
"Come to this address at this time," she said. "Bring everything you've found. And Mr. Morane? Don't trust anyone. Especially not me."
IV.
Jack didn't go to New Jersey. He went back to his office, poured himself a drink, and sat in the dark.
The rain had started again. It always rained in Los Angeles when you had nowhere to be and nothing to do. Through the window of his seventh-floor office, he could see the streetlights reflecting on the wet pavement, creating a thousand tiny suns on the asphalt.
He opened the envelope Vivian had given him that morning. Inside was a single check and a one-way ticket to Buenos Aires. Departure in three days.
He picked up the phone and dialed Captain O'Brien.
"Jack? What do you want?"
"I need your advice, Cap. On something."
"Make it quick. I'm in the middle of something."
"Should I leave town?"
O'Brien was silent for a long time. When he spoke, his voice was different. Softer. The voice of a man who had once been Jack's friend before the badge and the war and everything else had come between them.
"Jack, some doors, once opened, can't be closed. If you've seen what you think you've seen, then you already know more than you should. And knowing more than you should is a dangerous thing in this city."
"So what do I do?"
"Drink your whiskey. Smoke your cigarettes. Wait for the rain to stop. And whatever you do, don't look up at the sky."
Jack hung up. He looked at the check. Then he looked at the photographs of the three dead scientists. Then he looked at Finch's notebook, open to the page with the words: The universe is a forest. Every tree hides a gun.
He picked up his gun from the drawer. It was a .38 Special, well-maintained, oiled and cleaned. He'd carried it for twenty years. Twenty years of bad decisions and worse whiskey and nights like this one, when the truth was out there somewhere and he was too tired to chase it.
He wiped the gun clean with a cloth, checked the cylinder, slid it back into the drawer. Tomorrow, another detective would walk into his office with another story and another envelope full of money. And he'd take the case, because that's what he did. He was a private investigator in a city that never slept and never cared.
But tonight, he sat in the dark, listening to the rain, and thought about forests and guns and the terrible silence of the stars.
The signal continued, somewhere above the atmosphere, traveling through the dark at the speed of light. Carrying messages from things that had been here long before humanity, waiting for a moment that might never come.
And Jack Morane, in his seventh-floor office above a broken elevator, watched the smoke from his cigar curl toward the ceiling and wondered if anyone, anywhere, was listening.
