"What am I facing?"
She looked at him with those terrible gray eyes, and David understood for the first time that her concern had not been hypothetical. Professor Moreau had seen this before. Not in herself—she was too proud, too disciplined for self-examination—but in others. In patients whose minds had been fractured by something she could not name and perhaps did not want to.

ACT THREE: CRISIS
David infiltrated the NeuroGen facility on a Thursday, which felt significant only in the sense that every Thursday felt significant when you had lost the ability to trust your calendar. David told himself this was justified because he was a psychiatrist, and psychiatrists are permitted to break rules in the service of diagnosis. He told himself a great deal of things. He was not sure anymore which of his thoughts were his own.
The underground server room was on basement level three, past a security checkpoint that Philippe's pass opened with a green light and a mechanical click that sounded, to David's fractured sensibility, like the sound of a door opening onto the rest of his life. The room was cold and blue-lit, the servers humming with the low-frequency intensity of accumulated intelligence. He found what he was looking for without difficulty: the master file, labeled simply RIFT_MASTER, containing the complete library of implantable memories—every experience, every emotion, every sensory detail that NeuroGen had constructed and could deploy.
He downloaded it to a portable drive and stood there in the blue light, holding the accumulated inner lives of people who would never know they had never lived them. And then the question arrived, uninvited, in the voice of a patient he had once treated in Chicago, before Paris, before the notebooks and the cafés and the slow disintegration of what he had believed was his own continuous consciousness:

People who had experienced similar phenomena, who had woken up remembering things that were not theirs, who had found themselves weeping at funerals they had not attended, cooking dishes from cuisines they had never learned, feeling the phantom pain of injuries they had never suffered. A network of the displaced consciousness, connected by the invisible thread of implanted memory, reaching across Paris and Lyon and Marseille and beyond.
David sat in his office on Rue Saint-Jacques and listened to them, one by one, over the phone. He did not try to diagnose them. He did not take notes. On the last evening, he walked along the Seine from the Île de la Cité toward the Pont Neuf. The river was dark and moving, indifferent to everything above it, and the streetlights reflected on its surface in a way that David would have described as beautiful if beauty were not such a compromised word. He thought of the patients who would never know they had never lived the lives they remembered. He thought of the file that was now everywhere and nowhere, distributed across a hundred servers, impossible to contain. He thought of the question that had no answer: am I the original, or am I a construction?
He did not know. And for the first time in four months, this not-knowing did not feel like terror. It felt, perhaps, like the beginning of freedom. Or perhaps it was simply exhaustion. David was no longer sure which was which. Perhaps, in the end, it did not matter.
The truth, he thought, walking into the dark toward the lights of the Latin Quarter, was that even if he was not real, the truth was. And that was enough.
