The Swamp Witch

The swamp does not give up what it takes.

Serafina DuBois knew this the way she knew her own name—because it had been taught to her by women who had stood where she was standing, looking at the same dark water, feeling the same ancient hunger rising from the mud.

She was twenty-three years old, the last of her line, and the swamp was calling her home.

It began in March, when the cypress trees began to bud and the air grew thick enough to swim in. Serafina was sitting on the porch of her family's house—a weathered wooden structure on a raised foundation, surrounded by Spanish moss and the constant hum of insects—when she heard the sound.

Not a voice. Not exactly. More like a pressure, a vibration in the air that told her the swamp was restless. Something was happening beneath the surface, something that required attention.

She had felt this pressure before. Her grandmother had felt it. Her great-grandmother had felt it. Every woman in the DuBois line had felt it, and every woman had answered the call.

The call came with a price. Her grandmother had lost her voice—simply stopped speaking one day, as though the words had been taken from her mouth. Her mother had lost her sight—gradually, over the course of a year, the world fading to gray and then to black. Serafina did not know what the swamp would take from her. She only knew that it would take something.

The seven journalists arrived on a Thursday in April.

They came in two cars—Henry McKinsey, the editor of a Chicago magazine; Margaret Hayes, an investigative reporter; Robert Chen, a photographer; Elizabeth Walsh, a feature writer; Charles Whitfield, an editor; Dorothy Palmer, a reporter; and William Torres, an intern. They were all white, all northern, all looking for a story.

The story was Eleanor Washington, a Black woman who had disappeared in the swamp three weeks earlier. Her husband, James, claimed she had been taken by a witch. The local sheriff had dismissed it as the ramblings of a grieving man. But Margaret had dug deeper, and she had found something that didn't fit the simple narrative of a missing person.

There were other disappearances. Three women in the past five years, all last seen near the swamp. All Black. All with no bodies found. The local authorities had closed each case as "possible accident" or "voluntary departure." But Margaret knew that people don't voluntarily walk into a swamp and never come out.

Serafina met them at the edge of the property. She was wearing a simple cotton dress, her dark hair pulled back, her face unreadable. The journalists looked at her with a mixture of skepticism and curiosity—the kind of look white people give to Black people they've decided are "exotic."

"I'm Serafina DuBois," she said. "You're looking for Eleanor."

"How do you know that?" Henry asked.

"Because the swamp told me."

They didn't believe her. Nobody believed her. But they followed her into the swamp anyway, because the story was too big to walk away from, and because something about Serafina's certainty made them uncomfortable but unable to refuse.

The swamp was beautiful. That was the first thing they noticed. Not ugly or frightening or gross—beautiful. The cypress trees rose from the water like pillars in a cathedral, their branches draped with moss that glowed green in the filtered sunlight. The water was still and dark, reflecting the sky like a mirror. Birds called from the trees. Dragonflies darted overhead.

And beneath it all, Serafina could feel the presence. The swamp was alive. Not metaphorically. Not poetically. Literally alive. A vast, ancient organism that had been growing and sleeping and waking for thousands of years.

On the first day, Serafina showed them Eleanor.

They waded through waist-deep water for an hour, following Serafina's lead. She moved through the swamp with an ease that was almost supernatural—not because she had supernatural abilities, but because she understood the swamp's rhythms. She knew which patches of water were shallow and which were bottomless. She knew which branches could support weight and which would snap. She knew the sounds the swamp made when it was content and the sounds it made when it was hungry.

They found Eleanor in a clearing—a small island of dry land surrounded by water. She was sitting against a cypress tree, her eyes closed, her breathing slow and regular. She was alive.

But she was changing.

Her skin had taken on the color and texture of swamp mud—gray, cracked, slightly shiny. Her hair had grown longer, tangled with moss and small roots. Her fingers were slightly webbed. She was still human, but the swamp was pulling her toward something else.

"She's not sick," Serafina said. "She's being absorbed. The swamp takes what it needs, and Eleanor is... useful to it."

"Useful how?" Margaret asked.

Serafina looked at her with eyes that were older than twenty-three. "Eleanor heard the swamp calling. She came here voluntarily. She wanted to hear what it had to say."

On the second day, Serafina showed them her great-grandmother.

They traveled deeper into the swamp, to a place where the trees grew so close together that the sunlight barely reached the water. In the center of a small lake stood a structure—a house, built on stilts, made of cypress wood that had turned silver with age.

This was where Serafina's great-grandmother, Adeline, had lived for sixty years. Adeline had been born into slavery, sold to a plantation in Louisiana, and had escaped during the Civil War by running into the swamp. She had not died in the swamp—she had chosen to stay. The swamp had taken her in, and in exchange, she had become its voice.

"She didn't die," Serafina said. "She dissolved. The swamp absorbed her, the way it absorbed Eleanor. But she's still here. In a way."

Serafina knelt at the water's edge and placed her hands on the surface. The water grew still. The birds stopped singing. And then, from somewhere beneath the surface, a voice emerged.

Not a ghost. Not a spirit. A memory. The swamp had recorded Adeline's voice, her thoughts, her emotions, the way a tape recorder records sound. And Serafina could play it back.

"I am the swamp," the voice said. It was Adeline's voice, but older, deeper, as though spoken by the earth itself. "I have been here before you. I will be here after you. I am not good. I am not evil. I am hungry. And I am patient."

On the third day, the swamp made its choice.

It was evening when the water began to rise. Not gradually—suddenly, as though something beneath the surface had shifted and displaced a massive volume of water. The journalists looked at each other in alarm. Serafina looked calm.

"It's time," she said.

"Time for what?" Henry asked.

"For me to answer the call."

Serafina walked into the water. She did not hesitate. She did not look back. She waded deeper and deeper until the water was at her waist, at her chest, at her neck. And then she stopped.

"Don't," Dorothy said. "Please don't."

Serafina smiled. It was the saddest smile any of them had ever seen. "The swamp needs a voice. My grandmother gave it her voice. My mother gave it her sight. I will give it my body. It is the only thing I have left to give."

"Isn't there another way?" Margaret asked.

"There is always another way. But this is the way I choose."

Serafina closed her eyes and let the water take her. She did not struggle. She did not scream. She simply sank, slowly, like a stone dropped into a still pond. The water closed over her head. The ripples spread outward and faded. And then the swamp was still again.

The six journalists left the swamp at dawn. They did not speak on the drive back to civilization. They sat in Henry's car and watched the Louisiana landscape pass by—fields, roads, small towns—and none of them knew what to say.

They knew the truth. But they also knew that if they told it, nobody would believe them. And if somebody did believe them, somebody would try to exploit it. The swamp was not a story. It was a force. And forces cannot be contained.

Henry McKinsey returned to Chicago and began to write the story. He wrote for three days and three nights. And then he stopped. He closed his notebook and never opened it again.

Because he understood what Serafina had understood. Some truths are too heavy for the living to carry. Some stories are not meant to be told.

He wrote one sentence in a private journal, a journal that no one else would ever read:

"The swamp is still there. It is still waiting. And it is still hungry."
