I.
The rain in Chicago didn't wash things clean. It just made the grime slicker.

"Malone," he said.
"The signal is weak," said a voice on the other end. The Voice, he called her, though he didn't know her name. She was an operator at a radio station on the South Side, and she sang on the late-night shows between the ads for soap and cigarettes. She didn't know what she was doing. But he did.
"I'll be there in the morning," Jack said.
He hung up, poured himself a drink, and stared at the wall. The signal. It was always the signal. Somewhere in the city, someone was broadcasting something they didn't understand, and it was only a matter of time before something else heard it and came looking.
He had learned the rules early. In the Navy, they taught you to identify threats. In the Signal Division, they taught you to eliminate them. You don't ask why. You don't ask who. You find the source, you cut it off, you go home and drink until the silence stops ringing in your ears.
But this time felt different. This time, the signal sounded like a woman's voice, and it sounded like grief.

The town was called Millerton, population 3,247, and it sat in the middle of nowhere, Illinois, surrounded by cornfields that stretched to the horizon in every direction. Jack drove through the main street at dawn, his sedan kicking up dust, the fog still clinging to the fields like a ghost.
The town was quiet. Too quiet. No cars on the street, no people on the sidewalks. The storefronts were closed, the windows dark. But from somewhere—everywhere, really—came a sound. A humming. Low and steady, like a lullaby sung by someone who doesn't know they're singing.
Jack parked outside the radio station, a small brick building on the edge of town. The sign above the door read: WMLT — 1420 AM — Music for the Soul.
He pushed the door open. The station was empty except for a young woman sitting behind a desk, her headphones on, her eyes closed. She was humming along with the broadcast, her lips moving silently, her body swaying to a rhythm only she could hear.
Jack approached her slowly. "Miss?"
She opened her eyes. They were blue, wide, and completely unafraid. "You're here," she said. Not a question. A statement.
"Who are you?" Jack asked.
"Sarah," she said. "I sing on the night shift. 11 PM to 1 AM. That's when the signal is strongest."
"What signal?"
Sarah took off her headphones and looked at him with an expression that was almost pity. "The one that's inside me. The one that's inside all of us. We don't know what it is. We don't know why we're singing. But we can't stop."
Jack felt a cold knot form in his stomach. "How many people in town are singing?"
"All of them," Sarah said. "Every morning when we wake up, we sing. Every evening when we go to sleep, we sing. The children sing in their cribs. The old men sing on their porches. The cows in the fields low along with us. We don't know why. We just do."
Jack left the station and walked through the town. He heard it everywhere: the humming, the singing, the low steady drone that seemed to come from the ground itself. He visited the school, where children were singing in their classroom. He visited the church, where the congregation was singing without a priest. He visited the general store, where the shopkeeper was singing while he swept the floor.
Everyone was singing. And no one knew why.
