The Crimson Offering

The carriage wheels crunched over the gravel drive as Eleanor Vance pressed her face against the fog-streaked window. Blackwood Manor rose before her like a spectre from the Yorkshire moors, its Gothic spires clawing at the leaden sky. She had accepted Lady Catherine Blackwood's invitation with mixed feelings - a weekend at a historic Yorkshire estate was extraordinary for a country doctor's daughter, yet something in the woman's letter had made her skin prickle with unease.

The door opened before the footman could reach it. Lady Catherine stood in the threshold, a vision in midnight velvet. She was perhaps twenty-five, with features carved from some cold classical statue - high cheekbones, a nose of perfect aquiline line, lips that curved into a smile neither warm nor cold.

"Eleanor Vance," she said, and her voice was like honey poured over crushed ice. "How delightful to have you. Come in, come in. The others are already assembled."

Six young women had been invited. Eleanor recognized two from London society - the dancing girl Poppy Chenault and the widowed Mrs. Harrington, barely thirty but already sporting the pinched expression of a woman who had buried a husband and a fortune. Three more had arrived from various parts of the country: a governess from Yorkshire, a schoolteacher from Devon, and a mysterious Polish countess whose English was imperfect and whose eyes were perpetually narrowed as if against glare. And then there was Lord Henry Ashworth - or rather, Lords Henry Ashworth and Charlie, for the young nobleman arrived with an odd duality that Eleanor found unsettling. By day, he was the epitome of aristocratic grace; by night, or so the servants whispered, he became someone else entirely.

The great hall was warm despite the October chill outside. A fire roared in the hearth, casting long shadows across tapesties that depicted scenes Eleanor found disturbing - women being led into dark forests, figures kneeling before stone altars, blood pooling on ancient grass.

"Your room is prepared," Lady Catherine said, leading Eleanor up a sweeping staircase. "The fourth floor, as with all our guests. How... symmetrical, wouldn't you say?"

Eleanor noticed the number carved into the door frame: IV. She had always been superstitious about the number four - in Chinese medicine, her father had once explained during a rare moment of sharing his eclectic interests, it represented death. Lady Catherine must have noticed her hesitation, for she smiled.

"Superstitious, my dear?"

"Only a little," Eleanor replied.

"Good. You will need all the help you can get here."

The first death occurred on the second night.

It was Poppy Chenault who was found dead. She had retired to her room after dinner, complaining of a headache. When the maid failed to receive an answer to her knocks, she summoned Lord Henry, who broke down the door with his bare hands.

Poppy lay on her bed, perfectly still, her eyes open and fixed on the ceiling. There was no mark upon her, no sign of struggle. Only a faint smile played upon her lips, as if she had died in pleasant reverie.

"Poison," declared the doctor who had been summoned from the village. "Something that stops the heart without a trace. I have seen it before - aconite, perhaps, or something even more exotic."

Lord Henry Ashworth stood over the body, his face pale but composed. Eleanor noticed his hands were trembling.

"Charlie has been quiet tonight," he murmured, so softly that only Eleanor heard him.

"Who is Charlie?" she asked.

Henry's eyes met hers, and for a moment something ancient and terrible flickered in their depths. Then the moment passed, and he was the charming aristocrat once more.

"Just an old family friend, Miss Vance. Come, you should rest. Tomorrow will be a long day."

But Eleanor did not rest. She lay in the vast four-poster bed, listening to the wind howl across the moors, and thought about Poppy's smile. It had not been the smile of someone who had died peacefully. It had been the smile of someone who had seen something - something that made death preferable to what came after.

At midnight, she woke to the sound of singing.

It came from somewhere deep within the manor, a low chanting in a language she did not recognize. The voice was feminine, rhythmic, and it seemed to vibrate through the very stones of the building. Eleanor slipped from bed, wrapped herself in a shawl, and followed the sound.

The corridor outside her room was empty. The singing seemed to come from somewhere below - perhaps the chapel, or the crypt. She descended the stairs silently, her bare feet cold on the stone steps, and found herself in a long gallery she had not noticed before. At the end of the gallery, a door stood slightly ajar, and light spilled from within.

Eleanor pushed the door open.

The room beyond was circular, lined with shelves that held not books but jars - hundreds of jars, each containing something preserved in cloudy liquid. In the center of the room stood a stone altar, and upon it rested a object that made Eleanor's breath catch in her throat.

It was a gemstone, the color of fresh blood, roughly the size of a hen's egg. It pulsed with a faint inner light, and as Eleanor stared at it, she felt a strange warmth spreading through her chest - the same warmth she had felt since she had worn her mother's necklace, the necklace that hung against her own heart like a second heartbeat.

"You see it too, then."

Eleanor spun around. Lady Catherine stood in the doorway, no longer smiling.

"What is that thing?" Eleanor whispered.

"The Bloodstone," Catherine said, stepping into the room. "The heart of our family. And the key to immortality."
