The Healing Season
I
The first patient I treated in Harlem was a girl who could not have been more than nineteen, lying on a cot in the back room of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, her body convulsing with a fever that had been building for three days. Her mother was kneeling beside her, singing in a voice that cracked on every third note, the kind of singing that holds people together when everything else is falling apart.

"Then you should have stayed unhappy," he said. "At least there you would have been warm."
I came to Harlem because I was cold. "I am a physician," I said. "There is a difference."
"Is there?"
"Yes. A doctor treats diseases. A physician treats people."
He thought about this. "That is a fine distinction," he said. "But it does not pay the rent."

By morning, the girl's fever had broken. She opened her eyes, looked at me, and said, "Mama?"
"She is in the other room," I said. "She has been praying for you."
Tanya slept for twelve hours. The things that break it are not always visible. Grief is one. Hunger is another. Loneliness is the worst of all, because it works slowly, like rust on iron, until one day you look down and you are nothing but rust.
I did not put this in the book as a recipe. I put it as a warning.

The Harlem Renaissance was happening around me, though I did not call it that at the time. I called it music. I called it poetry. I called it the sound of people who had been told they were nothing finding a way to say that they were everything.

The epidemic came in the autumn, when the leaves were turning and the air was getting cold and the tenements were getting colder because the coal companies had raised their prices again. The name of the plant was in Italian, and I had never seen it grow, but I had read about it in my medical textbooks, and I knew that it contained compounds that could strengthen the heart and open the airways.
I prepared it carefully, measuring each ingredient with the precision that medical school had taught me and the intuition that my grandfather had given me. I gave it to Marcus, and he drank it, and he closed his eyes, and he said, "That tastes terrible."
"It is supposed to," I said. "Terror always does."

The epidemic passed, as epidemics do. It did not leave Harlem unchanged. It left hundreds of dead bodies and thousands of wounded survivors and a community that was more fragile and more resilient than it had been before.
I did not claim credit for saving anyone. I was one person in a city of two million, and the number of people I had treated was a fraction of the number of people who had died. But the people who had lived, they remembered. And they told others. And the line outside my room grew longer.
I opened a proper clinic in the spring, with a sign on the door that read: Giuseppe Marino, M.D. Free or sliding scale. No one turned away.
The physicians at Presbyterian wrote to me once, asking if I would consider returning to the hospital system. I declined. I was not a man for hospitals. I was a man for rooms above barbershops and church kitchens and the streets of Harlem where people lived and loved and died and kept living anyway.
Father would have been proud, I think. He never said these things—he was a Sicilian man, and Sicilian men do not say these things—but I think he would have been.
I am older now. The clinic has moved twice, and it is larger each time, and I have assistants who are younger and smarter than I am, but they are not as stubborn, and I am still the one who decides which recipes to use and which patients to see and which battles to fight.
The Harlem Renaissance has passed, and a new generation has come, and the music has changed, and the poetry has changed, and the faces on the street are different, but the suffering is the same, and the healing is the same, and the space between the notes is the same.
I still go to the club on 133rd Street on Tuesdays, and I listen to Marcus play, and he still plays slower and softer, with more space between the notes, and the music is still beautiful and terrible and alive.
And sometimes, when a young physician comes to me—black, or white, or Italian, or Puerto Rican, or anyone who has been told they are not good enough for the hospitals—I take them into my consulting room, and I show them my grandfather's book, and I say: the body tells the truth. Even when the mind lies.
And I watch their eyes widen, as I once watched my own, and I know that the season of healing has not ended.
It has only just begun.
