The ferry from Brooklyn to Manhattan takes twelve minutes. I rode it every Saturday for three months in 1984, and in those twelve minutes I used to think about class the way other people think about God—knowing it's there but never quite sure what to do about it.

My name is Tony Costa. I was seventeen, Italian on my father's side, born in a apartment on Atlantic Avenue where four of us shared a bedroom and the kitchen smelled like garlic and laundry detergent. Emily Harrison was a sophomore at Columbia, living in a dorm on Morningside Heights, studying something called "Comparative Literature" which I didn't understand until she explained it to me using an example about two books that were the same except one was written by a man and one by a woman and the difference was everything and nothing.

We met in Central Park. I was there because a friend of a friend said there was a job posting at a bookstore near the park, and I was going to apply even though I didn't really want to work in a bookstore. " Gelato," I said. "That's a good word to remember."

She laughed. It was a nice laugh—light, not forced, the kind that comes from somewhere real. Her name was Emily. She had brown hair and glasses and a sweater that looked expensive but not showy expensive, like the kind of expensive that doesn't need to announce itself.

The bookstore interview was a disaster. I didn't know the difference between fiction and nonfiction shelves, and when the manager asked me what my favourite book was, I said "the one I'm reading right now" and he looked at me like I had said something in a language he didn't understand.

But I got Emily's number. She wrote it on the back of a library card—Columbia University library, 1984—and I put it in my wallet next to a quarter and a bus token I was afraid to spend.

That was September. By November, I had learned the basics of English grammar from Emily's older brother's old textbooks (she had borrowed them from "a friend"), and I had bought a suit from a thrift store on Fulton Street that fit well enough if you didn't look too closely at the lining.

The dinner invitation came in December. Emily said her parents were having a small Christmas gathering and she'd like me to come. "Just for dinner," she said. "No big deal."

I wore the thrift-store suit. Real paintings. Oil on canvas. I knew this because my father had a poster of the Statue of Liberty that he'd bought at a tourist shop in Lower Manhattan, and these were different. These were the real thing.

Mrs. Harrison received me in the foyer. She was a woman in her fifties with silver hair and a smile that was warm but not warm enough. "Tony," she said, and my name sounded different in her mouth—cleaner, more precise, like a word being pronounced in Latin. "Emily has told us so much about you."

"Thank you for having me, Mrs. Harrison."

"Call me Margaret."

I nodded. I didn't know what to say, so I said nothing, which was probably the right thing, because anything I said would have been wrong.

The dining room had a table that could seat twelve. We were four: Mr. and Mrs. Harrison, Emily, and me. Mr. Harrison was a tall man with grey hair and a face that looked like it had been carved from something expensive. He asked me about my father's shipyard job and listened while I explained (poorly, I know now) that it had closed and my father had been injured and we needed the money.

"That's unfortunate," he said. And he meant it. I believe he meant it. But his sympathy was the kind of sympathy that rich people give to poor people—genuine, but distant, like looking at something through glass.

Dinner was fish—some kind of white fish I didn't recognise, served with vegetables that were cut too precisely and a sauce that tasted like money. I used the wrong fork. Not the wrong fork exactly—there were three forks, and I used the second from the left instead of the outermost, which I later learned was the fish fork. But the difference was visible. Emily's brother, who was also there (he had come home from college for the weekend), noticed. He didn't say anything, but I saw his eyes flick to his father's face, and I saw his father's eyes flick to mine, and in that moment I understood something I had known intellectually but never felt viscerally: that class is not about money. It is about knowledge. It is about knowing which fork to use before you have to think about it.

After dinner, we moved to the living room. Mr. Harrison poured brandy. I had never drunk brandy before. It tasted like smoke and something sweet, and I drank it too fast, and Mr. Harrison noticed that too.

"Tony," Emily said later, in her room, closing the door behind us. "You don't have to impress them. They're... they're my parents. They're not the test."

But they were the test. That was the cruel thing. They weren't trying to test me. They weren't trying to test anyone. They were just being themselves—natural, effortless, the way a man who has always had money doesn't need to think about money the way a man who has never had it does.

Their kindness was worse than cruelty would have been. If they had been rude, I could have handled it. I could have been angry. I could have left and felt justified in my anger for the rest of my life. But they were kind. They were warm. They liked me. Emily's father asked me about my plans for the future, and Emily's mother said I should think about going back to school, and Emily's brother said he could put in a good word at his firm.

All of it was genuine. All of it was well-meaning. And all of it was a wall.

I left at ten o'clock. Mrs. Harrison walked me to the door and thanked me for coming. "You're a lovely young man, Tony," she said. And she meant it.

On the subway ride back to Brooklyn, I sat alone in a car that was mostly empty and I cried. Not loudly—just tears, silently, rolling down my face like rain on a window. I cried because I understood, for the first time, that the East River was not just water. It was a boundary. And no matter how many ferries I rode or how many English grammar books I studied or how many thrift-store suits I bought, I would always be on the other side.

Emily and I continued to see each other for another six months. We studied together. We walked along the Hudson. We held hands on the subway. But the dinner had changed something. I could not unsee what I had seen. I could not unlearn what I had learned.

She went to London in the spring of 1985 to study at the British Library. We wrote letters. The first letter came three weeks after she left—three pages, written in a handwriting that was neat and controlled. I wrote back in two days.

The letters got longer to write and shorter in content. By summer, they were postcards. By autumn, I had stopped writing altogether. I don't know if she stopped writing or if I just stopped answering. I think it was both. It was never a fight. It was never a betrayal. It was just the slow, quiet erosion of two people who lived in different worlds slowly drifting apart, like continents.

I took the warehouse job full-time. The pay was better than the gas station. I moved to a smaller apartment on Fulton Street, where I lived alone for the first time. Sometimes, on weekends, I took the ferry to Manhattan and walked past their building without stopping. The doorman still nodded at me. "Upward," his nod said. Always upward.

I heard through a mutual friend that Emily had married someone in London. A professor, I think. Or a writer. Someone who spoke Latin and could discuss books without feeling the need to prove himself.

I saw the wedding photograph on Facebook once, years later. Emily was smiling, and she looked happy, but the happiness looked tired, like a coat that has been worn too long and is starting to lose its shape. I scrolled past it.

Life is like that. Nothing dramatic. No turning points. No revelations. Just days, one after another, with a faint sense of regret that is so weak you can't even name what you regret.

Maybe I missed something. Maybe I didn't.
