The Manhattan Contract

I

The bar was called The Grey Horse and it lived up to its name. Grey paint, grey walls, grey men drinking grey beer through the hole in the ceiling where the water pipe had burst three months ago and nobody had fixed. Vera Delaney had chosen it for exactly this reason: it was the last place any of the Four would think to look for her.

She was sitting in the back booth when Jack Mercer walked in.

He wasn't supposed to be there. She had told him to come to the Grey Horse at nine, and it was nine, and he walked through the door like a man who had been here a thousand times, like he knew exactly which floorboards creaked and which stools wobbled and which bartender kept the good whiskey behind the counter where the cops couldn't see it.

He wore a coat that had been good at some point and a shirt that had been white at some point. His left leg dragged slightly when he walked. He had the kind of face that people forget after looking at it, which was either a disadvantage or exactly what she was looking for.

He sat down opposite her without asking.

"You're the veteran," she said.

"I am."

"You look like a man who's been through something."

"I've been through plenty."

"Good. That means you understand violence without being violent yourself. That's rare."

He looked at her over the rim of the beer glass the bartender had put in front of him. He hadn't ordered anything. The bartender had just set it down and walked away, like that was what you did when a Delaney sat at your bar.

"What do you want, Miss Delaney?"

"I want you to pretend to be my fiancé for thirty days. You show up at family dinners. You hold my hand. You look at me the way a man looks at the one good thing he's ever had. In return, I give you five thousand dollars a month and a flat in Brooklyn where you can live without worrying about the Delaney name."

He considered this. His face didn't move much—he had the kind of stillness that comes from knowing exactly how much you can tolerate and knowing when to stop.

"Why me?"

"Because you look like a man who needs money. And because when you walked in here, you didn't look at me like I was a Delaney. You looked at me like I was a person."

"That's because you are."

She stared at him. Nobody ever said that to a Delaney.

"Do you have a family, Mr...?"

"Mercer. Jack Mercer. And no. I had a mother. She died in '43."

"What did you do in the war?"

He finished his beer. The bartender refilled it without being asked. "I drove supply trucks through territory that belonged to nobody. My job was to keep men alive who didn't deserve to be kept alive. I did it for eight months. Then I came home."

"And now?"

"Now I drink beer in bars that don't have a ceiling."

She reached across the table and put her hand on his. His hand was calloused and warm and steady. The hand of a man who had done things and never talked about them.

"Can you do this?" she said.

"I can do anything you need me to do."

II

The Delaney family dinner was held in the main hall of the Delaney brownstone on 14th Street. Four men sat at the long mahogany table, each one representing a different faction of the crime family that controlled half of Manhattan's waterfront.

Tommy "Knuckles" Moretti was the youngest and the most dangerous. He ran the enforcers—twenty-three men who could make problems disappear.

Vincent "The Priest" Colucci was the money man. He laundered millions through nightclubs in Jersey and real estate in Queens. He had been a priest for six years before he realized he hated God more than he hated the money.

Nicky "Pretty Boy" Santoro was the lifestyle. He ran the speakeasies, the boxing matches, the women. He was beautiful in the way that made men uncomfortable and women dangerous.

Rico "The Shark" DeLuca was territory. He controlled Brooklyn and the Bronx, and his word was law in every bar, every warehouse, every corner store from Canal Street to Bay Ridge.

Vera walked in with Jack on her arm.

She had rehearsed this a thousand times. She had imagined Jack as someone loud, someone desperate, someone who would embarrass her in front of these men and make her regret every second of this.

Jack Mercer was none of those things.

He walked into the brownstone the way a man walks into a church—not with faith, but with respect for whatever might be inside it. He shook each of the Four's hand. He looked at them in the eye. He thanked them for the dinner. He sat beside Vera and ate his soup without comment.

Tommy Moretti spoke first. He always spoke first.

"So," Tommy said, leaning back in his chair and studying Jack like he was a problem he hadn't decided how to solve yet. "You're the guy my father's hired to scare off the competition."

Jack smiled. It was a small, polite smile—the kind of smile you give a stranger who asks you the time and you're not sure if you should tell them.

"I'm Vera's fiancé, Mr. Moretti."

"Knuckles. And you can call me Knuckles."

"I'll call you whatever Miss Delaney tells me to call you."

Vincent Colucci laughed. Not a real laugh—more of an exhale that might have been a laugh if you were looking for one. "He's got manners. That's something."

Nicky Santoro was looking at Jack's hands. "You've got the hands of a man who's done labor."

"I have the hands of a man who's done what he had to do."

Rico DeLuca didn't speak. He just watched. His eyes were dark and flat and unreadable, the way a man's eyes are when he's been seeing through lies his entire life and has stopped being impressed by them.

Dinner passed without incident. Afterward, in the kitchen, Vera's father sat her down and told her that this was fine for now, but that Jack Mercer was nobody, and nobodies didn't last long in this family.

"Keep him close," her father said. "And keep him useful. A useful nobody doesn't ask questions."

III

Three weeks into the contract, something changed.

Jack started coming home later at night. When he did come home, he came home quiet—quieter than usual. He would sit in the kitchen with a cup of tea and stare at the wall the way a man stares at a problem he's trying to solve.

Vera started noticing things.

The first thing was the files. She found them on Jack's desk—ledgers, bank statements, correspondence between the Four and men they shouldn't be corresponding with. The FBI. Rival families. Journalists who asked too many questions.

The second thing was the phone calls. At 2 AM, Jack would get up and walk to the phone booth at the corner of 14th and Irving. Vera would listen from the window, watching his silhouette move in the streetlight, listening to the low, steady cadence of his voice. He was never yelling. He was never arguing. He was just... talking. And whatever he was saying, it was working.

The third thing was what happened to the Four.

Tommy Moretti was arrested on a drug charge. Not a minor charge—an indictment. The feds had been building a case against him for months and nobody in the family had known. Nobody except Jack, apparently.

Vincent Colucci's money laundering operation was exposed by a New York Times article that cited sources inside the family. The FBI raided three of his clubs in one night.

Nicky Santoro disappeared. Nobody knew where. Nobody knew if he was alive.

Rico DeLuca tried to fight. He gathered his men, he dug in, he prepared for war. And then his own men left him. One by one, they walked away from the Bronx operation and didn't come back.

Vera confronted Jack in the kitchen at 3 AM, the way she had been wanting to for weeks.

"What are you doing?" she said.

Jack set down his tea. He looked at her with those still, unreadable eyes and said, "I'm doing what you hired me to do."

"You're destroying my family."

"I'm destroying the men who would use your family as an excuse to destroy you."

He stood up and walked to the window. The streetlight outside caught the side of his face, and for a moment she saw something she had never seen before—a man's face, stripped of all the performance, all the politeness, all the quiet submission. A man's face, raw and real and furious.

"My mother was a Delaney," he said. "Before she was my mother, she was a Delaney. And before that, she was the woman who owned the most successful bookmaking operation in Brooklyn. My father was her accountant. He loved her. He stole from the family to pay for her medical care. They killed him for it."

Vera couldn't speak.

"Your father took everything from us. The business, the reputation, the land. He told everybody my father was a criminal. Which, technically, he was. But he was also a man who loved his wife and did what he had to do to keep her alive while your father made sure she couldn't get the treatment she needed."

"He's my father."

"He's the man who sits at your dinner table and tells you he loves you while he plots how to use you to consolidate power. And you know what? He does love you. That's the terrible part."

IV

The war came on a Saturday night.

Jack had been preparing for it for weeks. He had arranged the pieces carefully, moving them one at a time until the board was exactly where he wanted it. And then he triggered it.

It started with the FBI raid on the Delaney brownstone. Twenty agents, warrants signed by a federal judge, ledgers and weapons and money seized in six hours.

Vera was in the kitchen when it happened. Jack was in the bedroom, packing. Not all of his things—just the essentials. A change of clothes, the files he had compiled, a gun he had never shown her before.

"You're leaving," she said.

"I was always going to leave."

"After thirty days?"

"After everything."

He zipped his bag. He looked at her one more time, and in that look she saw something she hadn't expected—not anger, not triumph, not even love. Pity. The kind of pity that comes when a man has done exactly what he came to do and knows that the person he's doing it to is going to hate him for it.

"I didn't want this for you," he said.

"You chose this path."

"I chose it for my mother. Not for you."

He walked out the door. She watched him go. She watched him disappear into the night the way a man disappears into a story he's telling and nobody can hear him over the noise.

Two days later, her father called her into his study and told her that the family was finished. The Four were scattered or arrested or dead. The territory was divided among rival families who would tear each other apart in a year or two.

And Jack Mercer was gone.

Vera sat in her father's study and listened to him describe the end of everything he had built, and she thought about the man who had walked into a bar on 14th Street and changed the trajectory of an entire empire with three words and a steady pair of hands.

She picked up the phone and called the number he had given her—the one for his flat in Brooklyn, which was empty, which he had never lived in, which was just a mailbox and a lie.

It rang four times. Then a voice on the other end said, "Hello?"

And she knew, with the certainty of a woman who has never been sure of anything in her life, that Jack Mercer was gone for good.

She said nothing. She hung up the phone. She sat in her father's study and listened to the end of the world.

It sounded exactly like silence.
