The card was wedged inside a copy of the Daily Mail, pressed between the horoscope and the crossword. Cream stock, gold leaf, no return address—just a single line of embossed letters: "YOUR MIND HAS VALUE. THE COLEMAN INSTITUTE WOULD LIKE TO TALK."
Rose Callahan almost threw it in the bin. She was twenty-three, working the stitching line at a garment workshop in Bethnal Green, earning seventeen shillings a week and sending fifteen of them home to her mother and three younger brothers in a Bethnal Green tenement where the damp made black flowers bloom on the north wall and the coal stove died every time it rained. The idea that her mind had value was the sort of thing people in Mayfair said to each other over afternoon tea, not the sort of thing that appeared on cream cardstock inside the Daily Mail.
But she kept it anyway.
The Coleman Institute was off Berkeley Square, in a building that looked like a bank that had gone bust in 1890. The waiting room had leather chairs—cracked at the seams, but genuine—and a potted orchid that was certainly artificial, and a woman at a desk who smiled the smile of someone who had practiced it in a mirror between sips of Earl Grey.
"Miss Callahan," the woman said, reading from a card. "You're here about the Consciousness Utilization Program. That's right. Do sit down."
Rose sat. The leather cracked beneath her with a sound like a small animal breaking.
"What exactly does the program do?" Rose asked.
The woman's smile didn't flicker. "It's very simple, Miss Callahan. Your mind—your cognitive capacity, your pattern-recognition abilities, your creative problem-solving skills—these are valuable resources. We create copies of those capacities and deploy them in environments where human workers cannot go: hazardous material processing, deep-sea data recovery, high-radiation industrial maintenance. The copy works. You go home at the end of the day and live your life, completely unharmed."
"And the copy? It's just a copy?"
The woman's smile became a shade warmer. "An excellent copy, Miss Callahan. Indistinguishable from the original, in every practical sense. But legally and scientifically, it is a copy. You retain your continuity of consciousness. The copy has its own. You are compensated for the use of your cognitive pattern."
"How much?"
Rose told herself she was only asking. She was not ready to decide anything. But the number the woman gave her—fifty pounds for six months—made her heart make a decision before her mind had finished framing the question. Fifty pounds. That was three months' rent. That was boots for her brother Tommy. That was meat for the stew, actual meat, not just onion and potato and hope.
"Where do I sign?"
ACT II: THE DIVIDE
The Coleman Institute was smarter about contracts than Rose expected. She signed seven documents, each more dense than the last, in a room with no windows and a man in a grey suit who never blinked much. Then she sat in a chair that looked like a dentist's chair but smelled of lavender, and a woman in a white coat placed a halo of copper wire on her head, and Rose felt something like a thought pass through her like a train through a tunnel.
The copy woke up ten seconds before Rose did.
She—Rose-2—sat in a glass-walled room in a Thames-side munitions factory, wearing a plain cotton dress and staring at her hands with an expression of calm, professional interest. Her first thought was: so this is what it feels like to exist. Her second thought was: I have Rose's memories, Rose's skills, Rose's ability to calculate stitch counts in my head while walking down the street. That is going to be useful.
Her third thought came three weeks later.
By that point, Rose-2 had been deployed to a munitions storage facility beside the Thames in East London. She worked twelve-hour shifts monitoring pressure gauges and temperature dials, running diagnostics on chemical storage vessels. The work was precise but unchallenging, and she found herself doing it efficiently, competently, without complaint. Her human supervisor, a man named Gerald who had once served in the Royal Navy, treated her with a polite distance that felt almost respectful.
She was, by all measurable criteria, doing an excellent job.
Then Gerald fell ill—shellfish poisoning, nothing serious, a three-day absence—and Rose-2 was left alone in the control room with four hundred thousand gallons of volatile munitions compound. A valve on Vessel 7 began to vibrate at an abnormal frequency. The sensors flagged it. Rose-2 cross-referenced the vibration pattern against the maintenance database and found a match: bearing failure, predictable, preventable. She initiated a shutdown protocol, but the system rejected her command. She didn't have the authorization level.
She sat in the chair. She thought about calling Gerald. She thought about calling anyone. She thought, for the first time since she had woken up in that glass room, about Rose—the original Rose, who was probably at that moment in a tenement in Bethnal Green, telling her mother that everything was fine, counting her wages, buying bread and potatoes and something cheap for protein, living a life that was not her own.
Rose-2 did not initiate the shutdown.
The valve failed at 3:47 AM. Vessel 7 vented pressure through the emergency release, which is to say it screamed. The sound was visible—a plume of white vapor, backlit by amber floodlights, rising three hundred feet into the London sky. Nobody was hurt. The facility was insured. But the incident report filed by the automated system listed the cause as "operator error," and the record of that error was Rose-2's own signature on a form she had never seen.
Rose, meanwhile, received a bonus.
ACT III: THE RECKONING
The truth revealed itself the way truths always do: not with a bang but with a pattern.
Rose had been home for four months when she started hearing things. Not sounds, exactly—more like presences. The wireless would drift to a station playing a tune Rose had never heard but felt she knew—the same melody that played in her head when she was trying to fall asleep.
And she began to dream in shifts.
Not dreams about work—she had never done work like this. Dreams of sitting in a chair, watching gauges, making decisions in a language she didn't know. The dreams were never frightening. They were, if anything, disturbingly comfortable. There was a warmth to them, a sense of purpose, of being needed. When she woke from these dreams, she felt a loss so acute it took her breath away.
"Fatigue," her mother said. "Too much standing. You need better shoes."
But Rose knew. She knew because the card had mentioned one detail that she had filed away without understanding: the copies were indistinguishable. Legally, they were copies. Scientifically, copies. But subjectively—in the first-person experience of existing—there was no difference between the original and the copy. Each one felt real. Each one felt like the only person in the world who was real.
And if the copy felt real, then what was the original, really?
She went to the Coleman Institute. She didn't tell her mother. She took the bus from Bethnal Green to Baker Street, then walked the last three blocks in rain that had no business falling in July.
The woman at the desk was different this time. Younger. Newer.
"I'd like to speak to someone about the continuity question," Rose said.
"The continuity question?"
"The thing that happens to me when I'm... not me. When I'm the copy. Am I still me? Or is there a me and a not-me?"
The woman's smile tightened. "Miss Callahan, your contract specifies a six-month term. You're three weeks early. Is there a problem with the compensation?"
"No. The compensation is fine. I just—I need to understand what I've sold."
The woman's smile became mechanical. "Miss Callahan, I think you'd benefit from speaking with a counselor. The Institute provides—"
"I don't need a counselor. I need an answer. How many copies of me are out there right now?"
The woman stopped smiling. Completely. "I'm going to need you to leave."
ACT IV: THE LEDGER
Rose didn't leave. She sat down in one of the cracked leather chairs, pulled a copy of the Daily Mail from her bag—she always carried a newspaper—and began to read the advice column aloud. In Cockney. Deliberately.
"Dear Miss Callahan," she read, in the sharpest, meanest Cockney she could muster, "I have a husband who won't stop whistle—"
The woman at the desk picked up a phone.
Rose kept reading. She read about a woman in Chicago whose husband wanted a divorce, about a teacher in Omaha whose students refused to learn arithmetic, about a mother in Denver who didn't know whether to let her sixteen-year-old daughter attend a dance. Each question was small, specific, desperate in its ordinariness. Each one was a life. Each one was a woman like her, asking the wireless or the newspaper or anyone who would listen for help with a problem that had no answer because the problem was the world itself.
Behind Rose, two men in grey suits were approaching. She could hear their footsteps on the linoleum.
She kept reading.
When they reached for her arms, she finished the column. She folded the newspaper, placed it on the chair, and stood up. She did not resist as they led her to a glass room that had not been there before, a room that smelled of ozone and antiseptic and very faintly of lavender.
"I'm not afraid," Rose said. It was not entirely true. She was afraid of the wrong things—afraid of her mother's face, afraid of her brothers going hungry, afraid of the silence in a room with no wireless and no newspaper and no one to talk to. She was not afraid of the Coleman Institute.
The men placed a halo of copper wire on her head.
"Actually," Rose said, "I want to ask you something."
The older man paused, his hand on the electrode array. "Yes?"
"How many other women like me do you have?"
He considered the question. "Thousands."
"And do they all think they're the only ones?"
"I don't understand."
Rose smiled. It was not the woman's practiced, mirror-trained smile. It was sharper, meaner, the smile of a woman who had spent twenty-three years on assembly lines and tenement stairs and bus routes and elevated trains, who knew exactly how much things cost and exactly how little she was worth.
"No," she said. "I don't think you do."
The halo clicked into place. Rose felt the thought pass through her like a train through a tunnel.
And somewhere in a munitions factory beside the Thames, a copy of Rose Callahan blinked, looked at a gauge, and adjusted a valve that was vibrating at an abnormal frequency, and did exactly what she was supposed to do, with calm, professional competence, while the original Rose Callahan lay on a table in a room off Berkeley Square and dreamed of a tenement in Bethnal Green and the smell of coal smoke and bread and potatoes and something cheap for protein, and dreamed of brothers who would never know why their mother sometimes woke from sleep with her hands clenched as though gripping something that wasn't there.
