The question is whether you'll change it for the better or destroy it."

He didn't answer that either.

The voices got louder.

Not the humming. The presence. The sense of other minds pressing against the edges of his own. It started as a background sensation and grew into something he could no longer ignore—a chorus of voices, not audible but felt, speaking a language he was learning to understand.

He realized, with a calm that was almost serene, that the voices were not hallucinations. They were something else. She opened the drawer where Alistair had kept the Aetherian manuscripts.

She began to read.
