The Velocity Log

Log Entry 442. Subject: Dr. Alistair Vance. Observer: Sam Thorne.

I remember when Dr. Vance was just a man. He used to bring me coffee in the early mornings, the steam rising in the cold air of the lab, and talk about the "poetry of motion." He was a gentle soul, a man who loved old leather-bound books and slow, meandering walks in the park during autumn. He believed that speed was not a tool for power, but a window into the divine. Then came the Project Aeon.

Vance became obsessed with the "Absolute Velocity." He believed that if a human could move fast enough, they could perceive the thoughts of God, or at least the underlying code of the universe. I watched him change. First, he stopped sleeping, his eyes becoming sunken and manic. Then he stopped eating, claiming that the act of chewing was a "waste of precious milliseconds." He began to view the rest of us as "sluggish," as biological errors in a world of potential speed.

By the second year, Vance had replaced his nervous system with superconducting filaments and his heart with a miniature singularity drive. He no longer spoke in a voice I recognized; he emitted a series of rapid-fire clicks and whistles that required a digital translator to understand. He didn't look at me anymore; he looked through me, as if I were a smudge on a lens, a slow-motion ghost in his high-speed paradise.

The day of the Final Test arrived. Vance stepped into the acceleration chamber, a sphere of obsidian and light. As the magnets roared, I saw him vanish. Not just from sight, but from reality. He became a streak of white light that circled the room ten thousand times a second, a shimmering ring of energy that threatened to tear the facility apart. I could hear him screaming, but the scream was a perfect, mathematical chord, a sound of absolute ecstasy and absolute terror.

Then, the light stopped. In the center of the room stood a figure. It looked like Vance, but the eyes were gone, replaced by two swirling galaxies of gold and violet. He didn't recognize me. He didn't recognize the room. He spoke a single word that sounded like a star collapsing, a sound that vibrated in my very marrow.

"Slow."

And then he vanished again, leaving behind a vacuum that nearly sucked the air from my lungs. I looked at the monitors. Vance's heart rate was zero. His brain activity was infinite. He had reached the speed, but in doing so, he had ceased to be a person. He had become a law of physics, a constant of the universe.

I closed the log and walked out of the lab, the silence of the hallway feeling like a heavy weight. I looked at my own hands, moving so slowly, so clumsily. I felt a sudden, sharp fear of the day I might actually catch up to him, the day I might find out that the only thing waiting at the end of the race is the total erasure of the self.
