The Ghost Note
The studio was above a hardware store on a street that had three businesses and a parking lot. The studio had one window, one mixing board, one microphone that worked sometimes and one that worked most of the time. Dave had owned it for two years. He was not trying to make it famous. He was trying to keep it from closing.
He was listening to a demo on a Tuesday afternoon when he heard it. Not in the demo. In the hallway. Through the thin wall that separated the studio from the diner next door.
Someone was singing along to the radio. Not performing. Not trying. Just singing while doing something else, the way people sing when they are alone and do not know they are being heard.
Dave opened the door. The hallway smelled like fryer grease and industrial cleaner. The diner's back door was open, and a woman was at the counter, washing dishes, and she was singing the chorus of a song he did not recognize, in a voice that made him stop standing and start listening.
He stood in the hallway for a full minute, listening to her sing a song he had never heard in a voice he wanted to hear again. Then she turned, saw him, and stopped.
"You have a nice voice," he said. He did not know why he said it. It was the only thing that fit in the space between what he had heard and what he wanted to hear next.
"Thanks," she said. "You have a nice studio."
"It's above a hardware store."
"Still nice."
She went back to washing dishes. He went back to his studio. He sat at his mixing board and listened to the demo until it ended and then sat there for a while longer, thinking about the voice.
She came to the studio on Thursday. Not because she wanted to - because Thursday was the only day she was not working at the grocery store and the only day she was not singing at the bar. Thursday was the day that worked.
Her name was Amy. She was twenty-eight and she had a voice that she did not think much of because everyone has a voice, and most people do not think about theirs until someone else does.
"I don't know how to record," she said, sitting on the couch in jeans and a t-shirt that had a logo on it from a store that had closed five years ago.
"You don't have to," Dave said. "I'll handle the technical stuff. You just sing."
"How much?"
"For now, not much. When we figure out if this is -" He gestured, because he did not have a word for what it was. The space between not-much and not-nothing.
She nodded. She was the kind of person who nodded when she was thinking, which made her look like she was always thinking, which made Dave think that she probably was.
They recorded one song. It was not a famous song. It was a song she had learned from her father, who had learned it from someone who had learned it from someone, the way songs learn each other through families and time until they belong to nobody and everybody.
She sang it once. Dave listened. He could tell it was good, not in the way that a song is good on the radio, but in the way that a person is good when they are being exactly who they are and not trying to be anyone else.
"Again?" he said.
She thought about it. "Yeah."
They did it three more times. Each time, she got a little closer to the thing she was trying to say without saying it. The thing that lived in the space between the words, the ghost note that you feel more than you hear.
On the fourth take, she closed her eyes and opened them and kept singing. Dave stopped adjusting the levels. He just listened.
When she finished, the studio was quiet. Not the quiet of an empty room, but the quiet of a room that has just contained something and is still holding it.
"Okay," Dave said.
"Okay," Amy said. She looked at him, and there was something in her face that he did not have a name for, and he did not try to name it.
They met once a week for eight weeks. Thursday afternoons. The studio was warm in the afternoons because the sun came through the window and hit the mixing board and made it feel like something was happening inside the machine, even though nothing was.
Amy brought coffee from the diner. Dave brought a thermos of something that was not coffee. They talked about music, which was easy, and then about nothing, which was harder, and then about things that were almost music-adjacent, which was the hardest.
She told him she liked the way the light came through the window in the afternoons. He told her the hardware store below them sold the best duct tape in the city.
"Really?"
"Yeah. I use it for everything. Studio repairs. Leaky pipes. Things that need to hold."
"That's the most practical thing I've ever heard."
"That's the most honest thing I've ever said about duct tape."
She laughed. It was not a loud laugh. It was the kind of laugh that happens when a person is surprised by their own amusement, the way you are surprised by a temperature - you don't feel it change until you notice that you are warmer or colder than you were a moment ago.
She recorded the song over four sessions. Each session, she got closer. By the fourth session, she was singing something that was not on the page - something she had added in the spaces between the written notes, the ghost notes, the things that made the song hers and not her father's and not anyone else's.
Dave mastered it on a Friday evening, alone, while the cat that had shown up two years ago and never left slept on his keyboard. He listened to it three times. Each time, he heard something different. Each time, he thought: this is good. Not radio good. Person good. The kind of good that sounds like a human being.
He sent it to three people he knew who worked at small labels. One person listened and said, "Who is this?" He said, "Someone I know." The person said, "Send me more." He didn't have more. He told Amy.
She said, "Oh."
That was all. "Oh."
He took her to the diner after. They sat in separate booths. He thought about asking her to sit with him. He did not. She thought about asking him to join her. She did not. The check came. They both reached for it at the same time. Their hands were an inch apart. One of them let go. It was not clear which one.
"Your coffee's getting cold," she said.
"So's yours," he said.
They sat in the diner until the lights came on overhead and the waitress asked if they were ordering or just watching.
"We're fine," they said at the same time.
Eight months later, Amy was at the grocery store, stocking cereal in aisle four, when the radio at the register played a song she recognized. It was her voice. It sounded better than she remembered, which was strange because she had not heard it in eight months, and eight months is a long time to go without hearing your own voice on a recording, which is a thing that happens when you are not the one playing it.
She stood there for forty seconds, listening to it while a customer tried to scan items behind her. She did not turn around. She just stood there and listened to the voice that belonged to her and did not belong to her anymore, because it was on the radio and she was in aisle four and the radio was at the register and the voice was going somewhere she was not going.
She went back to stocking cereal.
Dave was in his studio, which was now someone else's. The hardware store owner had found a tenant. The tenant was a yoga instructor who played music that Dave would never have played in his studio but which, he supposed, was fine for someone who did not own a mixing board.
Dave had a copy of the song on a hard drive. He did not listen to it often. He listened to it once, on a Tuesday evening, while the cat sat on his keyboard and purred. He thought, for three seconds, about who that was - the voice on the recording, the person who had sung it, the woman who had brought coffee to a studio above a hardware store on Thursday afternoons and told him she liked the light.
Then he closed the laptop and made toast.
The toast was slightly burnt. He ate it anyway.
