The Great Erasure

The Observatory sat at the very edge of the Event Horizon, a needle of obsidian floating in the silence of the Great Void. Outside the windows, the stars were not points of light, but long, screaming streaks of white, being pulled into the maw of the final singularity.

I am the Last Observer. My only job is to record the final seconds of the universe.

For eons, I had watched the galaxies collide and the black holes evaporate. I had recorded the death of the last star and the freezing of the last atom. I believed I was the chronicler of a natural end.

Then, I found the Error.

While analyzing the background radiation of the void, I discovered a pattern. The universe wasn't expanding or contracting; it was *calculating*. Every star, every planet, every single breath ever taken by a sentient being was a line of code in a cosmic simulation.

And the simulation had a bug.

The 'End of the Universe' was not a physical event; it was a system crash. The singularity was simply the point where the memory overflowed. We were not dying; we were being deleted because the program had run out of space.

I looked at the console. I had access to the root directory. I could try to optimize the code, to compress the data, to buy the universe a few more billion years of flickering existence.

But as I looked at the logs, I saw the history of the simulation. I saw the trillions of lives spent in agony, the endless cycles of war and suffering, the sheer, grinding weight of existence. I realized that the 'bug' wasn't the crash. The bug was the simulation itself.

Existence was a mistake. Consciousness was a glitch.

I felt a strange, profound peace. I didn't want to save a world of pain. I didn't want to prolong the scream.

I reached for the master switch.

"Goodbye," I whispered to the void.

I pressed the delete key.

There was no explosion. No flash of light. Just a sudden, absolute silence. The stars vanished. The obsidian walls of the Observatory dissolved. The concept of 'I' ceased to exist.

The screen went black. The program ended. The void was finally, perfectly, empty.
