I.

Darkness implies the possibility of sight returning, of shapes resolving from shadow. This was absence. But the great machines of empire and commerce continued their work. The railways ran on time. The factories produced their goods. The great cities of England—London, Manchester, Birmingham—rose and fell in their daily rhythms as they had for centuries.

He had no expectation that anything would receive the signal. The years had taught him that. The warning had been sent, and the recipient—whatever intelligence had acted—had acted. To send again would be, almost certainly, to invite attention of a kind that he could not imagine and would, if he knew anything at all, regret.

But he had to send. It was not courage that drove him, nor hope. It was something older than both—a duty to the truth he had seen, to the world he had loved and failed to save, to the silence that now filled the space between the Earth and the other planets like a cold and vast sea. If he did not send, then what he had seen at three minutes past four on that November morning would have meant nothing. It would have been the hallucination of a tired and overwrought mind. So he would send. The word was NOT.

He stood before the apparatus. The rain beat against the walls. The gas lamp flickered. Through the open slit in the dome, the sky stretched above him, vast and cold and indifferent, the black circle where Mars should have been a wound in the fabric of the heavens that no healing was possible.

He placed his hand on the key. He pressed it.

The sparks leapt between the gaps. The pulses went out into the night, carrying their terrible message into the vast and listening dark. He felt, as he pressed the key, not triumph, not fear, but something like sorrow—a deep and abiding sorrow for a world that could not know what he knew, for a sky that no one else could see as he saw it, for the long and lonely road that had led him, step by inexorable step, to this moment of standing alone between the Earth and the stars, pressing a key that sent a word into the void.

The feedback came almost immediately. A surge through the apparatus, a blinding flash of light, a sound like the tearing of the sky itself. He felt heat on his skin, a pressure in his chest, and then—nothing.

When the villagers found the observatory the following morning, the building was in ruins. The telescope was shattered. The apparatus was melted into a formless mass of glass and metal. And in the centre of the devastation, lying prone where he had stood the night before, was the body of Sir Edwin Harborough, his face calm, his eyes open, fixed on the empty circle where Mars had been.

On the wall of the observatory, scrawled in his own hand with what must have been the last strength he possessed, were the words: "It hears. It hears all. We must be silent."

V.

The inquest concluded with a verdict of death by electrical accident. The Society, appropriately, expressed its regret. A brief notice appeared in the times, buried on page eight, beneath advertisements for patent medicines and property sales. It read: "Sir Edwin Harborough, long associated with the Royal Greenwich Observatory, was found dead in his country residence on Tuesday morning. The deceased, who was widely recognised for his contributions to astronomical science in his earlier years, appears to have met his end through an accident involving electrical apparatus. The Society extends its condolences to the family of a gentleman whose work, in an earlier period, had brought honour to the profession."

The notice was read by three people in London. None of them acted upon it.

The papers of were sealed and stored in the archives of the Royal Society, where they remained, unread and unremembered, for forty-seven years. In 1942, during the Blitz, the room in which they were stored was hit by a incendiary bomb. The fire was brought under control within the hour. The papers were damaged by smoke and water but not destroyed. When they were examined by a young researcher named Dr. Margaret Hayes, working on a thesis about nineteenth-century astronomical anomalies, she found the letter Sir Edwin had written to the Society in 1887.

She read it in the lamplit quiet of the reading room, and when she had finished, she sat for a long time without moving. Then she took from her bag the notebook in which she had been recording her observations, and on the first blank page she wrote, in a hand that was, perhaps inevitably, remarkably similar to Sir Edwin's: "The signal was a warning. It was always a warning. And we, who cannot hear it, are already standing in the dark."

She never published her findings. She burned the note before she left the room. But the act of reading, of truly reading, changed something in her. She continued her career. She published several papers on the perturbations of minor planets. She became, in her time, a respected and capable astronomer. But she never again looked at the night sky without feeling, however faintly, however she tried to suppress it, the presence of something vast and patient and incomprehensible, watching from the spaces between the stars, hearing every voice, waiting for the moment when the silence would be broken.

And on certain nights, when the weather is clear and the sky is black and the rain falls upon the cobblestones of London as it has always fallen, astronomers who know what to look for sometimes report seeing, in the empty circle where Mars used to be, the faintest and most transient suggestion of red light—a blink, a flicker, a spark in the darkness—that lasts for no more than a second and then is gone.

Whether it is anything at all, or merely the imagination of tired eyes and troubled minds, no one can say.
