The Driving Range
I
The first thing you learn about Detroit in 1948 is that the rain never stops — it just changes direction. Some days it comes down from the sky. Some days it comes up from the river, rising off the water like breath from a dying man's mouth. I learned this in a job that promised steady work and steady pay and delivered neither. I was an instructor at a driving school owned by a man who believed the steering wheel was the closest thing to a god that a working-class boy could ever hold.
My name is Danny O'Malley. My father's name is Vincent. He owned the driving school. I worked it. My brother Frank was the one who never worked — he was too busy being perfect. Frank was twenty-six, a Navy veteran, a community leader, a man who helped rebuild the neighborhood one block at a time. He was also, as I would discover, a man who stood on the roof of the driving school every night at midnight, smoking a cigarette and watching Detroit glow like a machine that had forgotten how to stop.
The incident that landed me in the VA hospital's disciplinary ward was simple: me and Lenny Moretti breaking into the home of a city official who had been squeezing families for "protection money." Lenny swung first. I froze. The official's assistant took a club to the arm and lost the use of it. When the police came, I told them Lenny did it alone. I was not lying exactly — Lenny had swung, and I had not stopped him, which in the economy of our street was close enough to lying to count as one.
Frank visited me once. He stood outside the wire fence with that face — that face that made old women cry and children stand a little straighter. "You need to do better, Danny," he said. I wanted to tell him that doing better was a luxury for people who had somewhere to do it. But Frank didn't have the answer to that, and I didn't have the courage to ask it.
II
Frank died on a Tuesday. No note. No warning. Just a body on the pavement below the driving school's second-floor window and a neighborhood that couldn't process the idea that perfection could end so suddenly.
His sister — a quiet woman named Margaret who worked at the library — found something in his room that none of us had suspected. A stack of unsent letters. Each one addressed to someone different: the mayor's daughter, the pastor, the old man who ran the corner store, my wife-to-be Betty. They were all the same letter, addressed to different people, each one a small confession of a man who was drowning in plain sight.
"I am doing everything everyone wants and nothing I want," Frank had written to the pastor. "I am becoming a ghost in my own house."
Margaret told me that Frank had been standing on the roof the night before he died. She had heard him — a light footstep, the strike of a match, the long drag of a cigarette. She had called his name. He had said, "The sun doesn't rest, Sis," and then nothing.
I went to the roof after the funeral. The city stretched below me like a circuit board — neon signs flickering, streetlights humming, the river a black ribbon cutting through the dark. I stood where Frank had stood and looked at nothing and tried to understand what it was like to be a man who carried the whole world on his shoulders and found that the world was heavier than he was.
I did not find him on the roof. I found him in the driving school's practice lot, in the Ford sedan he had used for his last lesson — a young woman named Rosa who was learning to parallel park on Woodward Avenue. Frank had been patient with her. He had guided her through the turn signal, the mirror check, the smooth application of the brake. "It's not about controlling the car," he had told her. "It's about listening to it."
The car was still warm when I got in. I sat in the driver's seat — Frank's seat — and gripped the wheel and felt nothing for a long time. Then I started the engine. The car ran perfectly. It always would. Frank had made sure of that.
III
Lenny Moretti found me three weeks after the funeral. He called himself "The Snake" now — some gangster kid's idea of a nickname, but it stuck because Lenny had become someone who moved through the city like a snake moves through grass: quietly, inevitably, leaving destruction in his wake. He worked for the syndicate now, delivering packages, collecting debts, doing things that men like Lenny did when they came out of institutions and found that the world had moved on without them.
"He gave you six shots in the clip," Lenny told me, sitting in my kitchen with a cigarette that he did not ask permission to light. "Six shots for six months. Same number they'll use when this goes wrong. You hear me? Six."
He gave me the keys to the Ford fleet — three sedans, all from the driving school's practice lot. "Take one. Drive to the abandoned plants on Gratiot. Deliver the package to the man in the grey coat. He'll give you an envelope with cash in it. Don't open it. Don't look inside. Just bring it home."
"I'm not doing it," I said.
"You already are."
I took the blue Ford. I drove to Gratiot. The package was in the trunk — heavy, wrapped in brown paper, smelling faintly of something chemical. I carried it to the building where the man in the grey coat waited. He handed me an envelope. I handed him the package. Six shots. Six months. The numbers matched, and something in my stomach turned over.
When I returned to the Ford, Lenny was gone. I waited. I smoked a cigarette I didn't want. It started to rain. I drove home.
My father saw everything. I know he saw everything because he was parked two blocks away in his old sedan, the one he'd driven for thirty years, the one he claimed was "good enough." He watched me carry the package. He watched Lenny get out of the car and smoke a cigarette in the empty lot. He watched me run back to the Ford, alone, the envelope burning a hole in my pocket.
IV
Vincent found Lenny in an abandoned factory parking lot on the industrial east side. It was raining. It was always raining in Detroit, even when the sky was clear — the rain was built into the bones of the city, in the bones of the men who lived there. Lenny didn't try to run. He stood beside a rusted-out Buick with his hands in his pockets and waited.
Vincent got into the Ford. He started the engine. He drove.
I found out about it the next morning, when the police came to the driving school and asked my father questions in voices that were carefully neutral. The kind of voice a man uses when he is already grieving and doesn't want to show it yet.
"How many children do you have, Mr. O'Malley?" the detective asked.
Vincent O'Malley looked at him for a long time. The driving school was quiet — the practice lot empty, the cars still, the fluorescent lights humming. Outside, Detroit woke up and began its day of making things and breaking things and making more things.
"One," Vincent said. "I have one son."
He sat in his cell on the third day, looking at a photograph on the wall above his bunk. It was a picture of two boys — one taller, one smaller — standing in front of the driving school sign, smiling with the bright, untroubled smiles of children who have no idea that the world is about to teach them the difference between them.
Frank was on the left. I was on the right. Both smiling. Both strangers to the man holding the photograph.
The radio in the cell block played a Frank Sinatra song. "I'm a fool to want you," he sang, and I closed my eyes and thought of my brother, standing on the roof, watching the city glow, wondering if there was a place in the world where he could stand that wasn't in the light.
