ACT I -- SETUP

The fish banquet was the kind of event where men wore ties that were too wide and women wore dresses that were too tight, and everyone pretended it was a charitable affair when it was really just an excuse for thirty dock bosses to eat cod and argue about union dues. I was at corner table three, pretending to read the ledger I was supposed to be auditing, when Mrs. Patricia O'Neil materialized at my side like a bad omen with a fur collar.

"Vera." She said my name the way you say a verdict. "You look tired."

"I sleep fine."

"Your eyes say otherwise." She pulled out the chair across from me without asking and sat down. Patricia O'Neil was fifty-five, widowed twice, and possessed of the kind of confidence that comes from having survived two husbands and still having money. She wore pearls that cost more than my annual salary and a smile that had once convinced a city alderman to look the other way.

"Jimmy's worried about you," she said. "He says you've been working late. Obsessively."

"I audit. It requires working."

"Jimmy says you've been looking into the pension fund."

The ledger went cold in my hands. Not literally -- Chicago in November was cold everywhere -- but the particular cold that comes when someone reaches into your desk drawer and reads the entries you've been hiding under the monthly summary.

"Jimmy says a lot of things."

"Does he? Does he say he's been funneling the creative budget into a slush account? Does he say that account is registered to a P.O. box on North State?"

I kept my face still. Inside, something had shifted. Not fear -- I had learned fear in a marine barracks and a divorce courtroom, and they had taught me that fear was just information you hadn't processed yet. This was something else. Recognition. Patricia O'Neil was not just my mother-in-law-to-be. She was an intelligence operation with a pearl necklace.

"And does Jimmy say," I asked, "why he hasn't told me any of this?"

Patricia's smile sharpened by half a degree. "Because I told him to. Because someone needs to make sure you're not digging into something that will get you killed."

"Killed?"

"Vera, this is Chicago. The docks move product that people would rather not have inspected. Your union rep, the one who signed your timesheets -- have you noticed how he never comes to the monthly meetings anymore? How his office has new locks?"

I had noticed. I had also noticed that the timesheets he had signed didn't match the hours the office staff had actually worked. The difference was going somewhere. I just didn't know where yet.

ACT II -- UNDERCURRENT

Rose DeLuca came to my desk on Thursday morning with a medical certificate and a face that had been crying without sound. She was thirty-one, a filing clerk for eight years, and three months pregnant with her first child. Her husband was a dock worker who drank too much and worked too little, which in Chicago meant they were typical.

"They're pushing me out," she said, sliding the certificate across the ledger. "Floor manager says the filing department is 'restructuring.' They want to bring in a temp."

"Since when do they bring in temps for filing?"

"Since the temp costs less than maternity leave. Since the union rep says he doesn't cover 'anticipated absences.'"

I looked at the certificate. Dr. Malloy -- Patricia O'Neil's cousin, I would later discover -- had certified Rose as "medically unstable for continued employment." The certification was dated the day before Rose had told anyone she was pregnant.

Patricia had been planning this for a while.

I spent the afternoon tracing the union rep's financial trail. His signature was on the timesheet fraud. His signature was on the pension reallocation that had sent dock workers' contributions to a account registered to a shell company. His signature was on the medical certification that was supposed to get Rose DeLuca fired before she could file for pregnancy protection.

The trail led to a building on South State Street -- a brick warehouse with a sign that said Maloney Auto Repair in letters that had been painted over three times, each new layer darker than the last.

Ray Maloney was twenty-six, an ex-Marine who ran the garage from a bay with a leaky roof and a workbench that had seen better decades. He had the kind of face that looked like it had been designed by someone who thought pain was an attractive feature.

"What can I do for you?" he said. He was wiping grease from his hands with a rag that was already black.

"I need to know who your union rep is."

He stopped wiping. Looked at me. Looked past me. Looked back. "That's a dangerous question in this town."

"I'm a bookkeeper. Everything I do is dangerous."

ACT III -- CLIMAX

The fish banquet had ended by the time I got back to the office. The building was dark except for the security light over the main door, which cast a yellow rectangle on the wet sidewalk like a stage. I let myself in with the key I had carried for four years.

The ledgers were in my desk. I had them organized by month, by department, by the financial architecture of a corruption network that stretched from the dock floor to the union office to what I was pretty sure was a lakefront condo being bought with stolen money.

I was packing them into my coat bag when Jimmy O'Neil appeared in the doorway. He was thirty, built like a linebacker who had discovered yoga, and currently very confused.

"Vera. What are you -- how did you get in?"

"Same way you did. Key. Four years."

He stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. The security light painted us both in yellow shadow. "You're taking the ledgers."

"I am."

"Give them to me. I'll make sure they get to the right people."

"The right people being who? Your mother? The union rep? The shell company on North State?"

His face went through the expressions I had come to recognize: surprise, irritation, a flicker of something that might have been shame if I had believed in shame the way I believed in rain. "Vera, please. My mother -- she did what she thought was right."

"She siphoned three hundred thousand dollars from dock workers' pensions."

"She invested it. In a property. For our family."

"You can't invest pension money in property for your family, Jimmy. That's not how it works."

"Everything is how it works if you know how it works." He came closer. "Stay. Marry me. Pretend you didn't see any of this. I can make it go away."

"What can't go away is the women who won't see their retirement at sixty-five. What can't go away is Rose DeLuca, who's going to lose her job and her health insurance because your mother decided she was a liability."

He stood very still. The security light hummed. Somewhere down the hall, a pipe banged.

"You're going to take those ledgers to the union rep," he said. Not a question.

"I'm going to take them to the federal investigator. The one your mother has been calling every Tuesday for six months."

Jimmy's face went white. "You know about that?"

"I know everything." I zipped the bag. "I know about the timesheet fraud. I know about the pension fund. I know about Rose. I know about the condo. And I know that when I walk out that door, half the office is walking with me."

He made a sound that was almost a laugh. "You can't --"

"I already did. Told them at lunch. We're done, Jimmy. The ledger is closed."

ACT IV -- AFTERMATH

I walked out of the building at eleven o'clock at night with a bag full of ledgers and a conviction that would either make me rich or get me killed. Chicago weather does not distinguish between the two.

Ray Maloney's garage was three blocks south, and I could see the yellow glow of his sign through the rain. I went in without knocking. He was under a Buick, half his body inside the engine bay, grease from elbow to wrist.

He slid out when he saw me. Wiped his hands on his pants. Looked at the bag.

"You look like you've been in a fight."

"I have. With a mother-in-law."

He nodded. Not surprised. Not unsympathetic. Just nodding, the way you nod when someone tells you the world is the world.

"Got a motorcycle," he said. "Restoration project. Been working on it for eight months. Should be ready to ride by spring."

"Where is it?"

"Inside. Covered." He pointed to a tarp in the corner that had the shape of a machine underneath. "You want to see it?"

I wanted to sit down. I wanted to cry. I wanted to call the federal investigator and hand her the bag and go home and sleep for a week. What I wanted was not what I had. What I had was a bag of ledgers, a raincoat that had seen better decades, and a garage on South State Street where a twenty-six-year-old ex-Marine was looking at me like I was a person instead of a problem.

"Sure," I said. "Show me the motorcycle."

He pulled the tarp. The motorcycle was painted midnight blue with chrome that caught the garage light like scattered stars. It was beautiful in the way that machines are beautiful when they have been built by someone who understands that function and form are the same thing.

"I was going to give it to someone," Ray said. "After spring. But I can't think of anyone who needs it more than you do."

I looked at the motorcycle. I looked at Ray. I thought about Patricia O'Neil and her pearls and her cousin the doctor and her P.O. box on North State. I thought about Rose DeLuca and her medical certificate and her three months of carrying a baby in a body that the system had decided was a liability.

I thought about how tired I was of being someone's liability.

"Thanks, Ray," I said. "But I think I'll walk."

He nodded again. "Rain's letting up anyway. Streets'll be clear by midnight."

"I know," I said. "I've been walking Chicago my whole life."
