The Coffee Cup War

At "Creative Pulse," a top-tier advertising agency in Manhattan, the atmosphere was usually one of manic energy and overpriced lattes. Felix and Oscar, the two lead Creative Directors, were the agency's golden boys. They were a perfect team—Felix provided the logic, Oscar provided the flair.

Until the Tuesday of the Coffee Cup.

The CEO, a man named Barnaby who viewed corporate management as a form of performance art, had a habit of saying things that were technically true but contextually disastrous. During a brainstorming session, Barnaby accidentally placed Felix's espresso cup on Oscar's desk and remarked, "You two are so similar, it's almost as if you share a single brain."

To a normal person, it was a clumsy compliment. To Felix, who suffered from a chronic need for originality, it was a devastating critique. He interpreted it as: "Oscar is the original, and Felix is just a copy."

Oscar, noticing Felix's sudden stiffness, assumed the comment was a jab at his own lack of discipline. He interpreted it as: "Felix is the professional, and Oscar is just a chaotic ornament."

Neither of them asked for clarification. Instead, they began a silent war of "creative corrections." Felix started subtly changing Oscar's copy to be more "structured," while Oscar began adding "emotional depth" to Felix's layouts without asking.

The conflict escalated with absurd speed. A misplaced staple became a declaration of war. A slightly too-loud laugh in the hallway was interpreted as a mockery of a failed pitch. They stopped using the shared Slack channel and started communicating through a series of increasingly passive-aggressive emails CC'd to the entire department.

The climax occurred during the pitch for the "LuxeWatch" account. In a desperate attempt to outdo the other, Felix presented a campaign that was so "structured" it was boring, while Oscar presented one so "emotional" it was nonsensical.

The client, a stern Swiss watchmaker, looked at the two directors, who were currently glaring at each other with a hatred usually reserved for blood enemies.

"Is there a problem?" the client asked.

"No," Felix and Oscar said in unison, their voices dripping with venom.

The client didn't hire them. In fact, he complained to Barnaby that the agency seemed "mentally unstable." Barnaby, seeing the chaos he had accidentally sparked, decided that the easiest solution was to fire both of them.

As they walked out of the building, carrying their belongings in cardboard boxes, Felix looked at Oscar.

"I can't believe you tried to steal my layout for the third slide," Felix muttered.

Oscar sighed. "I didn't even see the third slide, you idiot."
