The radio repair shop on Spring Street smelled of solder and regret, which Jack Callahan considered an honest combination. He'd been fixing radios since 1945, when he came home from the Pacific with hands that shook too much to hold a rifle steady but were perfectly steady enough to twist wire and crimp connectors and align oscillator coils.

She walked into the back room and shone the flashlight on the wreckage. The radio was a melted heap of metal and glass and regret. The shelves were scorched. The floor was covered in broken tubes and melted wire.

"Did it work?" she asked.

Jack thought about it. "For thirty seconds, every radio in three blocks went silent. Every telephone. Every speaker. Thirty seconds of silence."

"And then?"

"And then my radio died, and the city went back to normal, and nothing changed."

Vera set the flashlight on the workbench. "Maybe that's enough. Thirty seconds of silence. Maybe that's all any of us get."

Jack finished his cigarette and stood up. His knees cracked. His back ached. He looked at the wreckage of the radio that was supposed to change everything and felt nothing at all—not disappointment, not relief, not triumph. Just the flat, empty feeling of a man who'd done something and it hadn't mattered and it had, simultaneously, in equal measure.

"Maybe," he said.

Outside, Spring Street was loud again. Cars and people and life, all of it making noise the way cities do. But Jack remembered the thirty seconds—the silence that had fallen over the street like a curtain, and for thirty seconds, nobody had been broadcasting to anybody, and everybody had been alone with their own thoughts, and it had been the most honest thing Jack had experienced since he came home from the Pacific.

He picked up a broom and started sweeping broken glass off the floor. Vera watched him for a moment, then picked up another broom and started sweeping beside him.

They swept in silence, which was different from the silence Jack had been chasing. This silence wasn't empty—it was full of the sound of brooms on concrete, of breathing, of two people working together in a burned-out shop on Spring Street, sweeping up the wreckage of a radio that had screamed for thirty seconds and then died, leaving behind nothing but the quiet truth that sometimes the most radical thing a person can do is break something that's already broken and call it even.
