Julian was eventually released, not as a reward, but because he had become "uninteresting." He was returned to the surface world, but he found that he could no longer function in it. The colors were too bright, the noises too loud, the people too fragmented. He spent the rest of his life in a small, quiet apartment, where he spent his days staring at the ceiling, counting the flickers of the light.

He never spoke to anyone. He just lived in his imaginary city, a place of perfect order and absolute silence. He realized that the Administrator had succeeded after all; he had erased Julian's connection to the world, but in doing so, he had given him a kingdom that no one could ever take away.
