The penthouse was a vacuum of white marble and silence. Julian and Marcus stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the city of New York pulse like a dying neon heart below them.

"You've played the game perfectly, Julian," Marcus said, his voice a soft, dangerous purr. "The humility, the diligence, the carefully timed lapses in confidence. You've managed to make me believe that you are the only person in this city I can trust."

Julian didn't move. He could feel the cold sweat trickling down his spine. "I have always been loyal, Marcus."

"Loyalty is just a word for a price that hasn't been met yet," Marcus replied. He turned to Julian, his eyes wide and shimmering with a manic intensity. "The problem is, I've already paid the price. I've spent the last six months dismantling your life, piece by piece. Your bank accounts are empty. Your family has been contacted. Your reputation is a smudge of charcoal on a white sheet."

Julian's breath hitched. "What... why?"

"Because I wanted to see what happens when the mask is stripped away," Marcus whispered, stepping closer. "I wanted to see the raw, screaming thing underneath. And look at you. You're trembling. You're finally real."

But Julian's trembling wasn't from fear. It was from a sudden, violent surge of laughter that bubbled up from his gut.

"You think you're the only one who plays the long game, Marcus?" Julian asked, his voice suddenly steady, almost melodic. "While you were dismantling my life, I was dismantling yours. The 'offshore accounts' you've been using to fund your lifestyle? They don't exist. I've spent the last year redirecting those funds into a trust for the victims of your corporate raids."

Marcus's face froze. "What?"

"The authorities are in the elevator, Marcus. Not for me. For you. And since you've spent the last six months erasing my existence, you've effectively erased the only witness who could have testified in your favor."

The elevator chimed. The doors slid open.

As the officers moved in, Marcus looked at Julian. He saw a man who had lost everything—his money, his home, his name—but who was smiling with a purity that was more terrifying than any threat.

They were both ruined. One by greed, the other by revenge. As they were led out of the penthouse, the city below continued to pulse, indifferent to the two gods who had just burned their own heaven to the ground.
