Blood and Magnolias
The Spanish moss hanging from the live oaks along Cypress Lane did not sway so much as it hung, like laundry left to dry on a line that had not been pulled in thirty years. Bell Thorne stood on the porch of the house that had been her family's for four generations and watched the rain fall in sheets that turned the dirt road into a river, and she thought about how water, left long enough, could rot anything to which it had access.
The house smelled of camphor and something else, something that Bell could not identify and did not want to. It was the smell of a house that had stopped being lived in and started being maintained, which is to say that people moved through it the way fish move through water: present, necessary, unnoticed until the water runs out.
Grandmama was in her room on the second floor, sitting in her wheelchair by the window, watching the rain with eyes that were either seeing or not seeing depending on the hour and the light and the phase of the moon, which Grandmama tracked with a precision that medicine could not explain and Bell had stopped trying to.
"Cousin Silas is here," Bell said, entering the room.
Grandmama's eyes focused for a moment, which was one of her lucid periods. "The boy with the preacher's smile. I told your father not to let him in."
"Father's been dead twenty years."
"Then he should have sent a letter." Grandmama's voice was thin and reedy, like wind through dry grass. "Silas MacRae. Your mother's cousin. Came back from New Orleans with stories and a suitcase full of other people's money."
"Grandmama—"
"He put something in the cellar, Bell. Your grandmother put something in the cellar and told no soul. But I knew. I always knew."
Bell felt a coldness move through her that had nothing to do with the rain. "What did she put in the cellar?"
"Ask Silas. He'll tell you. He's been here three days and he hasn't told me yet, which means he's waiting for me to forget, and I may be old but I'm not stupid." Grandmama's eyes lost focus again, drifting back to the rain. "The moss is heavy today. The oaks won't hold it much longer."
Bell left her and went downstairs, found Silas in the parlor, which was a room that had not been used for its intended purpose in at least fifteen years but which he had claimed as his own the moment he arrived. He was sitting in one of the rocking chairs, legs crossed, reading a book that Bell recognized as her grandfather's copy of Tennyson, and she thought about how some men claimed spaces the way other men claimed women: with a confidence that suggested they had always belonged there.
"You found the books," she said.
Silas looked up. He was handsome in the way that Southern men are handsome when they are trying to be: carefully, with an awareness of exactly which angle of light and half-smile would produce the desired effect. "Your grandfather had excellent taste. Though he read too much Poe and not enough Churchill."
"Can I help you?"
Silas closed the book and set it on the arm of the chair. "I think you already know why I'm here."
"I know you're my cousin. I know Mother's family sent you. I don't know what you want from me."
He stood and walked to the window, looking out at the rain in the same way Grandmama had, and for a moment they were the same age, both of them watching the storm with the same expression of someone who has seen this before and knows it will not save them.
"There was a woman," he said. "Her name was Lillian. She worked in the house when I was a boy. Maybe ten, twelve years old. She came from the bayou with nothing but a dress and a song she sang in a language I didn't understand."
Bell said nothing. She had learned long ago that silence was a tool, and Silas was a man who filled silence the way the bayou filled rain: inevitably, whether you wanted it to or not.
"She had a daughter," Silas continued. "Not with my family. With one of the other men, though which one no one could agree on, which was convenient because it meant the blame could be spread around like communion bread." He turned to face her. "Lillian's daughter was named Moira. Moira MacAllister, though she was born O'Brien. William Thorne's sister, if you want to trace it back far enough."
"William Thorne died in the Civil War."
"William Thorne died in 1863, yes. But Moira died in 1893, and she died in this house, and she died in the cellar, and her death was not an accident and it was not illness and it was not recorded in any book that your family would let anyone read."
Bell felt the floor tilt slightly beneath her. "Why are you telling me this?"
"Because I am Moira's granddaughter. Because my mother carried her name and her silence and her anger like a stone in her pocket, and I am the first in the line to come back to Cypress and look at the cellar door and ask what is behind it." He took a step toward her. "And because I think you want to know as much as I do."
She wanted to tell him he was wrong. She wanted to say that she knew exactly what was behind the cellar door: nothing. A collection of broken furniture and rusted tools and the accumulated refuse of a family that had stopped maintaining itself and started merely existing. But Silas was looking at her with eyes that were too knowing, and she realized with a cold certainty that he knew she had been down there, that she had found something, that she had been looking for an answer and had been afraid of what she might find.
"Tomorrow," she said. "We go together."
The cellar door was at the back of the house, behind the kitchen, behind the pantry, behind a wall of shelves that held jars of preserved peaches and bottles of wine that had turned to vinegar and a box of letters that Grandmama had forbidden anyone to touch. Bell had touched them anyway, three months ago, when the house had felt too large and too empty and she had needed something, anything, to fill the silence that was growing inside her like mould.
The letters were tied with a ribbon that had lost its colour. They were written in a hand that was elegant and hurried at the same time, the writing of someone who was forming each letter with care but moving fast enough that the ink sometimes bled through the page. They were addressed to no one and signed with initials that Bell could not decipher.
She had read seven of them before she heard Grandmama's voice from the stairs, thin and sharp as a blade.
"Put them down, Bell."
Bell put them down. She stood in the cellar with her hands empty and her heart beating too fast and her grandmother watching her from the top of the stairs with eyes that were suddenly, terrifyingly clear.
"Who gave you those letters?"
"No one. I found them."
"On whose authority?"
"I don't know."
Grandmama came down the stairs slowly, using the rail with a hand that was swollen with arthritis, and stood in front of Bell and looked at the shelf where the letters had been and then at Bell's face and nodded once, which was either forgiveness or condemnation and Bell could not tell the difference.
"William sealed them for a reason," Grandmama said. "The world is not ready for what they say. And neither are you."
"I'm not a child."
"No," Grandmama agreed. "You're worse. You're a Thorne. Which means you'll keep looking until you find what you're looking for, even if it kills you."
She turned and climbed back upstairs, leaving Bell alone in the cellar with the jars and the bottles and the silence.
Bell looked at the shelf. She looked at the wall behind it. She reached up and pushed, and the wall moved, revealing a panel that had been painted to match the wood, and behind the panel was a space that was not on any blueprint, and inside the space was a box that contained a single photograph and a lock of hair and a letter that was addressed to Moira and dated 1893 and opened with hands that did not shake, because Bell Thorne had spent her whole life learning how to do difficult things without showing fear.
The letter was three pages long. Bell read it in the cellar light, which was dim and yellow and made the words look like they were floating on the page, and when she was done, she stood very still and listened to the rain on the roof and the house settling around her and the sound of her own breathing, which was the only thing in the world that she could still control.
Tomorrow, she would show Silas. Tomorrow, they would open the chamber beneath the old foundation and let the truth out. Tomorrow, the Thorne name would either survive one more generation or finally return to the earth that had consumed it.
Tonight, she stood in the dark and held the letter and let the rain tell her what words could not.
