Cross was a stubborn man, a veteran of the Union army, and he had survived the war by refusing to kneel to anyone—Confederate or otherwise.
Bell went to his house alone. He stood on Cross's porch and offered him the same deal he had offered the Millers: sell now at a fair price, or lose everything. Cross looked at him for a long time and said, "You're just like them, boy. You think the world belongs to men who are willing to take it."
"I think the world belongs to men who are willing to build something with it."
"You built nothing. You only took. There's a difference."
Bell didn't answer. He turned his horse and rode back to the Thorne mansion, and that night, he gave new orders to his captains: any man who refused to comply would be dealt with permanently.
Three nights later, Elias Cross was found dead in his field. A single gunshot wound to the chest. The Night Guard's first killing.
Bell stood over the body the next morning and felt something he had not felt since the war ended: certainty. Not the certainty of rightness—he knew, with the cold clarity of a man who has crossed a line he cannot uncross, that what he had done was wrong. But the certainty of direction. The killing had unified the Night Guard. It had terrified the county. It had accelerated the takeover. It had worked.
And that was the most terrible thing of all.
ACT IV: THE ASHES AGAIN
The Thorne plantation burned on a Tuesday in October. Bell was not inside when the flames started—he was in his room, writing a letter to no one in particular, a letter that would never be sent because he would never send it.
The fire began in the barn, the same barn his men had burned three years earlier, and it spread with the ferocity of something that had been waiting. The Night Guard tried to fight it, but the wind was wrong, and the wood was dry, and the flames climbed the mansion's walls like hands reaching for the sky.
Bell stood on the porch and watched his empire turn to ash. He thought of the Millers' garden. He thought of Elias Cross in the field. He thought of the twelve men who had followed him into the dark, and the fifty who had followed him into the fire. He thought of the land, cracked and broken and patient, waiting for someone—anyone—to build something real on it instead of something stolen.
When the fire was out, Bell Thorne was gone. The mansion was a skeleton. The land was scarred.
