The Empty Room

Frank Kowalski woke at 6 AM. He drank coffee. He drove to the clinic. He treated fourteen patients. He ate a sandwich at 12:30. He went home. His wife Maria was watching television. He ate dinner. He watched television. He went to bed.

A man in a brown jacket met Frank in a parking lot. He gave Frank a small white packet. He said: "It's for Councilman Russo. His medication. Put one pill in his coffee." Frank took the packet. He put it in his coat pocket. He walked to his car. He drove home.

Frank was at the clinic. He received a call: Councilman Russo was holding a public health consultation. Frank signed up. He went to Russo's office at 3 PM. Russo was a man in his 50s. He had gray hair. He shook Frank's hand. Frank said: "I'm a doctor." Russo said: "I know. Sit down." They talked about workplace safety. Russo said: "The deregulation act will help businesses. Businesses mean jobs." Frank said: "It will also hurt workers." Russo said: "Everything hurts someone." Frank touched his coat pocket. The packet was there. Russo said: "Do you have children?" Frank said: "Two." Russo said: "Mine are in college." Frank said: "That's good." The consultation ended. Frank left.

Frank went home. He took off his coat. He took the packet out of his pocket. He looked at it. He put it in the trash. He ate dinner. Maria said: "How was your day?" Frank said: "Fine." He went to bed. He turned off the light. The room was dark.

Frank treated the boy with the broken arm. The boy was seven years old. His father was a steelworker who had been laid off. The boy had fallen from a swing set. Frank set the arm. The boy didn't cry. Frank washed his hands. He looked at his reflection in the mirror. He saw a man in his 50s with gray hair and tired eyes. He saw a man who had treated thousands of patients and changed nothing. He saw a man who had been asked to kill a councilman and had done nothing. He saw a man who was fine.

The steel mill closed on a Tuesday. Frank read it in the newspaper. Three hundred workers lost their jobs. He treated five of them at the clinic that week. All of them had high blood pressure. All of them were smokers. All of them said they were fine.

Frank sat in the dark room. The light was off. The room was dark. He was fine.
