The Double Game

The email arrived at 2:47 AM. Dr. Sarah Chen was reviewing patient charts in the White House medical bay when it appeared on her screen. The subject line read: "We know what Stone is planning. Help us stop him."

She deleted it. She told herself she deleted it. But she kept a copy.

The meeting was in a basement office in Georgetown. Five establishment Republicans explained their case: Vice President Marcus Stone was accumulating dictatorial powers under the guise of national security. The Emergency Security Act would give him authority to detain anyone without trial, censor any publication, and bypass Congress entirely. They needed Chen to administer a non-lethal sedative that would make Stone appear ill and force a temporary transfer of power.

"We're not asking you to kill him," the lead conspirator said. "Just to buy us six weeks. Long enough to install a progressive alternative."

Chen agreed. She was a physician, not a politician. But she had seen what unchecked power did. She had treated patients whose lives were destroyed by policies she had no influence over. This was her chance to influence.

She studied Stone's medical file. He took a nightly supplement — a proprietary blend of vitamins and minerals. Easy to modify. She acquired the sedative. She began replacing Stone's nightly dose with the mild sedative. Stone would feel tired. He would look ill. The transfer of power would seem necessary.

Everything was going according to plan. Until Diana Ross, Stone's Chief of Staff, started watching her.

Chen noticed Diana across the West Wing hallway. Diana was a tall woman with sharp features and sharper eyes. She watched Chen the way a hawk watches a field mouse. Chen told herself it was nothing. Diana watched everyone.

But the watching continued. Every time Chen entered the Oval Office, Diana was there. Every time Chen handled Stone's medication, Diana was nearby. Chen began to wonder: is this surveillance, or is this something else?

The night of the final dose, Chen prepared the sedative in the medical bay. She was about to deliver it when Diana Ross entered.

"Dr. Chen, a word."

In Diana's office, Diana closed the door. "I know about the group that approached you."

Chen's heart stopped. "I don't know what you —"

"Don't lie. The five of them? Three work for me. The other two work for Stone. You've been playing a game where both sides want you to lose."

Stone entered the office. He was not angry. He was amused.

"Dr. Chen," he said. "The 'sedative' you've been administering? It's real. But it's not enough to incapacitate me. The real test was whether you'd follow orders or question them."

Chen felt the room tilt. "You let me —"

"You followed orders without questioning me. That tells me everything I need to know about you. You're loyal. That's more valuable than integrity."

Stone didn't fire her. He promoted her. "Chief Medical Advisor to the Vice President. Double the salary. You'll have access to everything."

Chen walked out of the Oval Office, the real medication in her hand, the sedative in her pocket. She administered the real medication to Stone. He nodded. "Good girl."

Back in the medical bay, she stared at the sedative vial. She pocketed it. For what? She didn't know yet. But the seed of future action had been planted. And seeds, given time and the right conditions, grow.
