The Last Exit
The desert had a way of stripping things down to their essentials. Tom Grayson learned this on the third day after he got out of the army, when his truck broke down in a town that appeared on no map he could find and disappeared from memory the moment he drove through it.
The gas station was a rusted skeleton beneath a sky the colour of burnt copper. Tom pulled in at dusk, the truck's engine ticking as it cooled, and stepped out into air so dry it felt like breathing glass. That's when he saw her.
She was standing by the pump, her hand pressed to her mouth, her eyes darting between him and the man leaning against the door of a black sedan. The man was tall, thin, with a face that had the hard angles of someone who had never smiled without calculating the cost.
"Can I help you?" he said, and his voice was smooth in the way that meant it was practiced.
"Just filling up," Tom said, moving toward the pump.
The woman's hand dropped from her mouth. She was younger than Tom, maybe twenty-five, with dark hair pulled back in a knot that was coming undone and a dress that had been expensive once and was now ruined by dust and something else—fear, maybe, or the slow erosion of hope.

Vance pushed him. Tom didn't move. Vance pushed again, harder, and Tom caught his wrist and twisted it until Vance let go and swore. Then the FBI arrived—four men in suits who moved through the gas station the way sharks move through water, silent and inevitable. Vance went down without a fight, which was its own kind of defeat.
Evelyn stood in the middle of it all, watching, her face blank. When one of the agents approached her and asked if she was okay, she shook her head once, slowly, the way a person shakes their head when the answer is too large for the question.
"Can I go home?" she said.
The home she described was a small apartment in Pasadena, furnished with the remnants of a life that had once belonged to her father. Captain Henry Cross had died two years earlier, and Evelyn had not been allowed to attend the funeral. Robert Cross had explained that it was too complicated, that the press would descend, that it would be better this way. Evelyn had believed him. She had believed a lot of things.
Tom stayed in LA for a week after Evelyn was safe, helping her sort through papers and make phone calls and relearn the habit of making decisions that were hers alone. She thanked him once, in a kitchen that smelled of coffee and dust, and he told her that thanking him was unnecessary because he had done nothing special.
"You did something," she said. "Most people don't."
"Most people are scared," Tom said.
"Maybe." She looked at him for a long moment. "Will you stay? Just for a few more days? I don't want to be alone."
He stayed. He helped her find a job at a diner on Sunset Boulevard. He helped her file a restraining order. He helped her buy a bus ticket to San Francisco, because she said she wanted to see the ocean, and the ocean was something she had never seen.
At the bus station, she hugged him—a quick, awkward hug, like a person hugging a tree—and then she was gone, disappearing into the crowd of travelers and commuters and people running toward or away from something.
Tom drove back to Illinois six months later. He got a job driving long-haul routes, the kind that took him across the whole country and back again, through deserts and mountains and cities that blurred together on the highway. He was good at the job. He was good at being alone in a truck with nothing but the road and the radio and the memory of a gas station in a desert that appeared on no map.
Once, a year later, he received a postcard from San Francisco. On the back, in handwriting that was steadier than he remembered, were eleven words:
"The ocean is bigger than the desert. Thank you."
He taped the postcard to the inside of his cab, where he could see it when the road got long and the night got dark and the desert started to feel like the only place he had ever known.
