The Rind and the Boss
Detroit, 1947. The winter had come early that year, and the snow that fell on Woodward Avenue was gray with the soot of a thousand factories. Jack Malone sat in his basement behind a closed-down hardware store, surrounded by crates of watermelons that had no business existing in a Detroit winter. But in this city, nothing had any business existing and yet everything did.
Jack was thirty-two, though he looked older. The man who entered was wearing a suit that cost more than Jack's entire inventory. He was young for a mobster—maybe thirty—with a face that had been shaped by violence but hadn't yet learned to hide it. He carried himself with the loose-limbed confidence of someone who had never been told no.
"Evening," the man said. His accent was Italian, but not the thick Brooklyn variety—the real deal, from somewhere in Naples or Palermo.
"Evening," Jack said. "Can I help you?"
The man walked to the crates, opened one, and picked up a watermelon. He turned it over in his hands, examined it with the serious attention of a sommelier inspecting wine, and then bit into it without asking. Juice ran down his chin. He wiped it with the back of his hand and took another bite.
"Good melon," he said.
"Thank you," Jack said. "Five dollars a piece."
The man stopped chewing. He looked at Jack the way a man looks at a dog that has barked at him. "I don't pay for things," he said. "Not in neighborhoods like this."
Jack set down his newspaper. He had been expecting someone like this—some low-level guy from one of the crews who thought he could take what he wanted. He had dealt with them before. The trick was to let them think they were winning while you actually won.
"Sir," he said, "I understand. The rind—the outside part you're eating right now—that's free. Anyone can have the rind. It's my way of giving back to the community. But the flesh," he pointed to the red interior of the melon, "the flesh is what costs money. The rind is free. The flesh is five."
The man stared at him. For a second, Jack thought he might punch him. Instead, the man's mouth twitched—not quite a smile, not quite a scowl—and he reached into his pocket. He pulled out a ten-dollar bill and dropped it on the counter.
"Keep the change," he said, and walked out.
Jack picked up the ten dollars. It was real. He had sold a watermelon to a known associate of the Moretti crew for five dollars and kept five in change. It was the best deal he'd made in weeks.
He didn't sleep that night.
The next evening, at exactly seven o'clock, the bell above the door jingled again. Jack looked up.
The man who entered was different from the one before. Older—fifty-five, maybe. He wore a dark suit and a fedora, and his face was a map of lines that had been carved by decades of making decisions that other people had to live with. But it was his eyes that caught Jack's attention. They were dark and intelligent and entirely without warmth.
"Jack Malone," the man said. It wasn't a question.
"That's right."
"I am Moretti."
Jack had heard the name. Everyone in Detroit had heard the name. Salvatore Moretti—food wholesaler by day, everything else by night. He controlled the wholesale market, the union locals, the politicians who looked the other way. He was, in every sense that mattered, the man who owned Detroit's food supply.
"Please, sit," Moretti said, gesturing to the wooden chair by the counter. Jack sat. Moretti did not sit. He walked to the crates, picked up a watermelon, and examined it.
"You have good taste, Mr. Malone. Watermelon in winter. Who sells watermelon in Detroit in January?"
" People want what they want, Mr. Moretti."
Moretti smiled. It was not a reassuring smile. "I know who you are, Jack. I know about the war. I know about the leg. I know you came home and couldn't find work and started selling produce out of a basement because it was something, anything. I know all of this."
Jack said nothing.
Moretti set the watermelon down. "What I don't know is where you learned to be clever."
Jack felt a coldness spread through his chest. "I don't know what you mean."
"Yesterday, my boy Frankie came to you. He ate your melon. He left five dollars. That's not what normally happens. Normally, Frankie takes what he wants and laughs when he does. But you—you made him pay. You made a Moretti associate pay for something he thought was free."
Jack's mouth was dry. "I just—"
"You told him the rind was free but the flesh cost money. That's clever. That's very clever." Moretti leaned forward slightly, and his voice dropped to a whisper. "But here's what you need to understand, Jack. That basement is in my neighborhood. The watermelons came through my channels. Even Frankie—sweet, stupid Frankie—was working for me. Every time he came to your basement and ate your melon without paying, he was reporting back to me. He told me how many melons you had, who was buying, what price you were asking."
Jack felt the blood drain from his face. "You—you were watching me?"
"I was watching a clever boy who thought he was playing a game. But the game was never yours, Jack. It never was."
Moretti straightened up. "I'm offering you a job. You're clever. I like clever. Work for me, and you'll make good money. You won't have to sell watermelons out of a basement. You won't have to worry about cops or wholesalers or anyone else."
"And if I refuse?"
Moretti's smile returned. It was worse this time. "Then I can't stop you from going back to your basement. But I can make sure that next time someone comes in and takes a watermelon, they don't leave any money at all. And Jack? I know things about you. Things about the war. Things that might not look good on paper. You think I'm dangerous? You have no idea."
He walked to the door, paused, and looked back. "You have until morning to decide. Sleep on it. Think about your options. But remember, Jack—options are a luxury. And you don't have any."
The door closed behind him. The bell jingled once and fell silent.
Jack sat in the basement for a long time. The watermelons sat in their crates, heavy and green and indifferent. He thought about the ten dollars on the counter. Five dollars for the melon, five dollars in change. He had felt so clever yesterday. He had felt like a man who had outsmarted the system.
But the system had been watching him all along.
He picked up the ten-dollar bill and stared at it. It was just paper. It always had been just paper.
Outside, the Detroit wind howled through the streets, and Jack Malone sat in his basement, listening to it, thinking about the choice he had to make, knowing that whichever choice he made, he had already lost.
