She was twenty-eight, British, and temporarily stateless in the way that married women of her class were stateless: her identity belonged to her husband, who was currently serving in Normandy with the British Army, and until he returned, she existed in a kind of limbo between daughter of the Ashford family and widow of a man who was still very much alive.

Two days after her return, the Germans intensified their operations in Warsaw. The uprising was being crushed, systematically and brutally. Zofia received intelligence that the German supply convoy had been rerouted—the information Catherine had delivered had been intercepted and used against the uprising.

Someone had betrayed them.

Catherine was not questioned. Zofia protected her, as she had always protected the civilians who had helped them. But Catherine saw the change in Zofia—the way her eyes grew harder, the way her movements became more precise, the way she stopped smiling.

The fifth operation became the sixth, and the sixth became something else entirely. Catherine was ordered to carry a new message to Warsaw—a final message, containing the coordinates of a bombing run that the Royal Air Force was planning. If the bombing succeeded, it would destroy a German ammunition depot that was being used against the uprising. If it failed—if the Germans intercepted the message and moved the ammunition—the bombing would be wasted, and the uprising would be without its last hope.

Catherine knew she was being asked to do something dangerous. She also knew that refusing was not an option.

The message was delivered. The bombing took place. The ammunition depot was destroyed. And in Warsaw, for one brief, brilliant moment, the uprising believed it had won.

They were wrong.

The uprising was crushed three weeks later. The Germans swept through the city street by street, building by building, burning and shooting and dragging people from their cellars. The Home Army fought until they ran out of bullets, and then they fought with whatever they could find, and then they stopped fighting because there was nothing left to fight with.

Catherine heard about it from a British journalist who had been in Warsaw and come out with blood on his shoes and tears in his eyes. She sat in her flat in Mayfair and listened to him describe the city being systematically erased, and she held Zofia's silver brooch—the one inscribed with Non sibi, sed patriae—and she felt the weight of it in her palm like a stone.

Zofia did not speak about Warsaw for weeks. When she did speak, it was in the past tense. "They were brave," she said. "They were so brave. And it was not enough."

Catherine visited Zofia every day. She brought food and newspapers and the occasional bottle of wine, and they sat in Zofia's room above the bookshop and said nothing, because there was nothing to say.

One evening, a month after the uprising fell, Zofia handed Catherine the silver brooch back.

"I want you to have this," she said.

"I can't—"

"Of what?"

"That courage is not the same as victory. That doing the right thing is not the same as changing the outcome. That sometimes you fight and you lose and the losing does not make the fighting meaningless."

Catherine put the brooch on. It was cold against her skin and then it was warm and then it was neither cold nor warm but simply there, like a word that had been spoken and could not be uns spoken.

Zofia died six months later, in a hospital in London, from wounds she had received during a resistance operation in Poland that she had returned to against orders. She was twenty-six. She never saw Warsaw again.

Catherine kept the brooch. She wore it every day for the rest of her life. She never married. She never spoke about Zofia to anyone except the women and men who had known her, and even to them she spoke rarely and quietly, as if Zofia were still listening.

Non sibi, sed patriae. Not for self, but for country. The words were Latin, but the meaning was Polish, and the meaning was universal, and the meaning was that some people live for something larger than themselves, and that living for something larger than yourself is the most dangerous and beautiful thing a human being can do.
