The Observer's Log

October 14th. The Guest has been with us for three weeks now. He calls himself Arthur, and he speaks of a world where men fly in metal birds and the sum of all human knowledge is held in a glass slab in one's pocket. He arrived in the middle of the cornfield, dressed in a suit of a fabric I have never seen—smooth, dark, and strangely repellent of the rain.

I have been tasked by the Master of the House to keep a detailed log of the Guest's progress. I watch him from the shadows of the veranda, my notebook open, my pen scratching the rhythm of his failure.

At first, Arthur was manic. He spent his days pacing the gardens, sketching diagrams of "engines" and "circuits" in the dirt. He believed that the inhabitants of our estate—the servants, the cousins, the distant aunts—were simply "uninformed." He attempted to teach the stable boys the basics of thermodynamics. He tried to explain the concept of a republic to the Master.

"You don't understand!" he would shout, his eyes wide with a terrifying intensity. "The world is larger than this valley! There are cities of light and oceans of data!"

The Master merely smiled and offered him more sherry.

By the second month, the manic energy began to curdle. Arthur noticed the things I had always known: the way the shadows in the east wing moved against the wind, the way the family portraits seemed to blink when no one was looking, and the heavy, suffocating scent of lilies that permeated every room, even in the dead of winter.

He tried to use his "future knowledge" to protect himself. He built a crude alarm system using copper wire and magnets, but the house simply absorbed the wires, weaving them into the wallpaper. He tried to map the estate, but the hallways shifted every time he closed his eyes.

I watched him slowly stop talking about the future. He began to spend hours staring at the wall, whispering to people who weren't there. He started to dress in the rags of the servants, as if trying to blend into the decay.

"The house is eating me," he whispered to me one evening, his voice a ghost of its former self. "It doesn't care about my science. It doesn't care about my history. It only cares that I am here."

Yesterday, Arthur stopped eating. He spent the entire day lying in the center of the cornfield, staring up at the grey sky. He didn't move when the rain began to fall, nor when the crows landed on his chest.

This morning, I went to check on him. Arthur was gone. In his place was a perfectly formed statue of salt, carved in the exact likeness of a man screaming in silence.

I have closed the log. I have informed the Master. We are now preparing the guest room for the next arrival. I wonder if the next one will also believe that knowledge is a shield.
