He wept then, and I felt no pity for him. Only a terrible, hollow sorrow.
But the deeper truth was yet to come. Pendleton and I spent the next month tracing the connections between Moriarty, Wetherby, and a network of corruption that reached into the Yorkshire gentry. We found that Wetherby had been receiving payments from several local landowners—payments that coincided with favorable rulings in land disputes, criminal cases, and inheritance claims.
Wetherby had not merely neglected to investigate Blackwood's death. He had orchestrated it. Moriarty had been his instrument—a desperate man with a grudge, set against a respectable farmer who had the misfortune to stand in the way of a land deal Wetherby was facilitating.
The children were collateral damage.
We arrested Wetherby on a cold morning in February. He did not resist. He simply sat in his armchair in the magistrate's office, his face pale, his hands folded in his lap, and said nothing. When Pendleton read him his rights, Wetherby looked at me and smiled—a thin, bitter smile.
"You think this changes anything, Miss Crawford?" he said. "The system will protect me. It always does."
He was right, in part. Wetherby's connections were formidable. His trial was delayed three times, his bail was set at an impossible sum, and the witnesses against him recanted one by one. Only Moriarty's confession remained, and even that was challenged on technical grounds.
In the end, Wetherby was acquitted on a technicality—a missing signature on the arrest warrant, a clerical error that Pendleton himself would later discover had been deliberate.
Moriarty died in Newgate Prison six months later, of consumption. The official report said he had coughed blood in his sleep. I suspect he had simply stopped wanting to live.
I stand now at the edge of the Blackwood property, which has been sold to a stranger from London. The farm is overgrown, the barn a skeleton of charred timber, the four graves marked by simple wooden crosses that the rain has begun to rot.
Justice was served, in part. A guilty man was caught. But the system that protected him remains intact, and the children who died remain dead.
The Yorkshire moors stretch before me, grey and endless, and the fog rolls in from the east like a shroud. I think of the Blackwood children—Thomas, Emily, James, Lily—and I wonder if justice means anything at all when the innocent pay the price and the guilty walk free.
I do not know. But I know this: the fog will lift eventually. And when it does, someone will have to tell their story.
