The Last Confession

Charles Vane received the invitation on thick cream paper, the kind of paper that cost more than most men earned in a week. The lettering was elegant, the ink a pale gold that caught the gaslight like a whispered secret: The Cloister of the White Rose requests the honour of your presence at a gathering of spirits. He arrived on a foggy October evening, and the convent was a palace of white marble and gold leaf, filled with artists, writers, aristocrats, and nuns who were nuns in name only.

Sister Seraphina greeted him at the gate, tall and luminous, her eyes like dark water. She spoke of beauty as if it were a religion. Charles was enthralled. He was a disciple of Wilde, a collector of white roses, a writer of verses about aesthetic transcendence. He believed that experience was the only true education, and he was hungry for it.

He was shown to his room. On the pillow lay a single white rose and a manuscript of poetry he recognized as his own, poems he had published under a pseudonym, stolen.

The gatherings began that night and continued for five more evenings. Each one was more extraordinary than the last. Seraphina moved through the room like a queen, drawing people into conversations that became confessions, confessions into desires. Charles spent hours with her, discussing aesthetics, morality, the nature of sin. She told him that God was beautiful, and therefore all beautiful things were divine. Charles began to neglect his writing, his friendships, his health. He ate nothing. He slept little. He existed only in Seraphina's presence.

Meanwhile, Brother Sebastian, Seraphina's creation, her masterpiece, painted her portrait obsessively. The painting grew darker with each session. Seraphina's eyes in the canvas seemed to follow Charles around the room.

On the sixth evening, Charles discovered the convent's secret. Seraphina had a second personality. During the day, she was serene and holy. At night, in the candlelit chapel, she became something predatory, cruel, manipulative, and terrifyingly intelligent. She enjoyed watching men fall apart. Charles realized he was her current project.

He tried to leave. Seraphina would not let him. She locked the gates. She told him that beauty demanded sacrifice. "You came here seeking experience," she whispered. "Now you will receive it."

Charles's mind began to unravel. He saw Seraphina's two faces simultaneously, the saint and the demon, and could not reconcile them. He stopped eating. He stopped speaking. He lay on the floor of his room and stared at the white rose. He died quietly, in his sleep, or perhaps in a dream.

Seraphina knelt beside his body and smiled. She buried him in the convent garden, beneath a white rose bush. Sebastian painted one final portrait: Charles, dead, his face peaceful. Seraphina hung it in the chapel.

The convent continued. New guests arrived, drawn by whispered rumours of beauty and transcendence. Seraphina greeted them at the gate, luminous and serene. In the chapel, Charles's portrait hung beside Sebastian's other works, a gallery of beautiful men who had come seeking something and found something else.

The white roses bloomed every spring. Seraphina tended them with gloved hands.
