Mickey Solano had been a lot of things in his thirty-eight years—soldier, boxer, bouncer, and now, apparently, the only person in New York City who gave a damn about who killed Joey 'The Knife' Moretti. It was 3:00 AM, the phone was ringing, and Mickey already knew it was going to be a very long night.

Turned out he was right. The phone call was from Lola Vance, owner of Club Paradiso, and she sounded like she'd been crying. 'Mickey, get down here. Joey's dead. And I think the Rossinis did it.'

Mickey had been expecting this call for six months. Since Joey had come to him with a story about a smuggling operation that ran through the club's basement. Guns? Mickey had asked. Drugs? No, Joey had said. Worse. Counterfeit bonds. Millions of dollars of them. Enough to blow the Rossini family sky high if the feds got involved.

Mickey drove across town with one hand on the wheel and the other resting on the butt of his .38. The city was a blur of neon and rain. He thought about Joey, about the way he'd laughed when Mickey warned him to go to the police. 'The police are the ones selling the bonds, Mickey. Who am I gonna call?'

Club Paradiso was quiet when Mickey arrived. Too quiet. The bouncer was gone from the door, the neon sign was flickering in a way that meant it was about to die. Mickey pushed through the doors and into the haze of stale cigarette smoke and abandoned champagne glasses.

Lola was in the back room. Sitting at the card table where Joey's body had been an hour ago. She was smoking a cigarette and staring at a stain on the carpet.

'He left something for you,' Lola said without looking up. 'In the safe behind the bar. Combination is your birthday backwards.'

Mickey went to the bar. Opened the safe. Inside was a ledger, a hotel key, and a photograph of a woman Mickey had never seen before but recognized immediately. She was the Rossinis' sister. The one who had disappeared in 1922 and was presumed dead.

Only she wasn't dead. She was very much alive. And according to the ledger, she was the one running the counterfeit operation.

Mickey sat back on his heels and laughed. It was funny, in a way. The most powerful crime family in New York, brought down by a woman they'd tried to erase from history.
